I have a 3 year Akita and she runs away when she's out the front door and ignores my commands. Treats or shock collar does not work! What should I do?
@kikopup5 жыл бұрын
@@AD-eq4kn The thing about treats and shock collars ... they function the same way... you have to condition them first before using them for training.... If your dog is running after a rabbit and you try to give him a piece of kibble, or if you were to hurt him... he will most likely not notice because hes chasing the rabbit. You have to condition the food to be reinforcing to the dog and conversely someone who trains with a shock collar would do the same with the collar. The food and the pain dont "make" the behavior "happen". I would suggest to use positive reinforcement because that is how I train. Reinforcement mirrors punishment in how it is conditioned and how it functions. I choose to use reinforcement because it is fun for the dog and doesnt have the side effects that pain and startle cause. The key though, is breaking the training up into steps- where you are conditioning the dog to want to come back to you, with easy things first before getting to the hard things (when the dog is over aroused). I suggest playing recall proofing games inside your house and then in your yard, like in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3q1ZICqibisf9k Then when outside dont have the dog off leash until you have a 100% reliable recall.

I recently had my dog escape the house. She is pretty new to me and has a very shaky recall, which is why she's never off lead. But she pushed the front door open for the first time and went on a joy run around the neighborhood. When I found where she was, it took everything in me to NOT let my fear show and cheerfully call her back. She, fortunately, came running. I made sure to reward her when she came back too. Though of course part of me was upset, the better management of that situation in my mind is making sure she can't get out again, not punishing her for coming back!

My puppy was fine walking off the lease between 4 and 6 months. Then his normal call of treat offers or clapping on my thighs, which worked fine previous months in our garden and out in the park just did not work. I had to ask a passer by dog owner to pick mine up whilst my puppy tried to jump at him. She likes to jump on people, in case they will give her treats. I just do not trust my puppy to respond to any trained recalls, so just allow her to run around using 50 ft lead. She comes back on recall, unless there is another dog around where she wishes to run to. When loose she was not interested in dogs, as she wheezed past all of them in very fast zoomies around them. I have learnt my lesson. Now she is almost 8 months and not thinking of giving any opportunity to not come back to me. It has been 2 frightening experiences for me. My husband never allowed her off the lease. He does not feel she responds to recalls. Until we are sure sge is good on recall, we will use 50ft lead, which gives her plenty of exercise. We also have 30ft tunnel, which she loves zooming around it in the house and also around our secure garden. Being a small breed she is only allowed 30 minutes a day walk. She loves doing more or gets bored easily. I have trained to do a lot of tricks. Thanks to Kikop, whose videos have been amazing!

He almost died. As soon as I squatted down and called him in a high pitch voice he came back. Thank God! We just adopted him and he’s such an amazing dog! I praised him and hugged him so tight. I was shaking from fear. He was just licking my face. Wanna make a grown man cry? Yeah he knew he scared me. How can you grow so attached to a dog that you just adopted 3 days ago? Great video with good ideas. Most runaways are telling their owner, “Hey, I need more exercise!” Rescued my current dog, an Aussie who was seldom exercised because he was too strong for her to take him out. Naturally he’d bolt every chance he could. He’d just run around as fast as he could, hoping someone would chase him. Treats are great when they’ve settled down a bit, but a loud squeaky toy helps let the dog know the fun isn’t over, it’s just beginning and they’ll want to join you. If he gets his daily dose of run til he drops, much less likely to take off. We play ‘collar catch’ at the dog park with lots of treats multiple times each visit. I also have 30’, 60’, & 100’ long lines when we have to miss dog park time. A tired dog is a good dog. LOL

Kikopup, your educating humans is just as beautiful as your dog training: everything is easy to follow and everything makes sense. I'm a great fan of dog training which is not based on physical or psychological intimidation. My dog (a rescued dog) used to be quite a problem dog (fearful of people, with a tendency towards using aggressive strategies when in danger, with quite limited social skills as far as other dogs are concerned). I went with him through a whole course of traditional training (with a prong collar and a choke collar) and of course none of his problems were solved that way. Then I came across wonderful people involved in positive training, and especially training based on good two-way communication and on the recognition of the importance of emotions. And this was how my whole dog adventure really began: I started learning a lot, my dog started to make progress in many respects... Today he is still problematic in certain respects, but at the same time he is a great dog - I'm really impressed by how successful he has managed to be. And, in fact, our life now is quite smooth - I only need to take into consideration his limitations. As a fan of positive dog training methods and a believer in education I even happened to translate some of your dog training texts into Polish (I am from Poland) - they have been posted on the website of my friend dog trainer, of course with due authorship acknowledgements and a link to the original website. I just wanted to let you know that you're doing a great job how to work and be with a dog - I really appreciate and admire your work!!!

Thanks for this video. I just had this situation today with my dog, who used to come when called anytime, her recall was pretty much 99% successful and we were working towards obedience off leash. But at some point she just started to run farther and farther away from me when off leash and breaking boundaries we had set (like not running into streets). I live in a tiny village so the streets are empty most of the time and cars are going slow, which is why I allow her to walk on the sidewalk with me off leash. Lately for some reason the recall doesn't work anymore in most cases and today, after looking back at me and not listening to all kinds of recalls which once worked, she actually ran into a street when she saw another dog on the other side! Luckily the car stopped when I ran in to pick her up. I figured I'll have to bring better treats with me again and reinforce long range recalls with better treats...

My boyfriend & I have had our adopted dog for a couple years now. He had a history of running away long before us. His adoption records showed that he was returned to the shelter 3 times before we adopted him. We were told it was because he kept escaping and running away from previous owners. He gets out by using his paw to pry the door open further when someone is leaving. He is a pretty big/strong dog so this is easy for him to do. When he gets loose, he doesn’t respond to calling, running away from him, treats, toys, or anything (we have yet to try laying on the ground). Today he got loose and almost ran towards a busy road. Luckily, he turned around, but there would’ve been no way for us to stop him if he hadn’t. ☹️ His behavior is very disheartening because we love him like he’s our child. A group of neighborhood boys caught him for us today, that was after an hour of us trying. We are always nice to him when he comes back, he gets plenty of exercise and affection, has lots of toys, and he is neutered, but he is still a very energetic dog & still tries to escape regularly. I could really use suggestions! I am worried about something bad happening to him.

Melody Beall I have a 13yr old beagle who is the same.. The more we call him to come to us, the more he runs.. I offer his favourite treats but he ignores, I never let him off lead at the off leach beach , after I tried it last year thinking now he’ll be ok, bad decision , other walkers caught him for me at car park, I do not punish him at all, but he loves to escape at every opportunity. I had tradesmen at home recently and they left one of the gates slightly open, It’s very frustrating as he is fantastic except for this.

@olbuddyolpal1205 жыл бұрын
Jac Woolley Some breeds have natural wanderlust potential as a breed trait. The beagle is one of them which makes sense if you think about it.. They were made to hunt and track off leash. Nothing you can do about it but manage it, unfortunately, but you should know you aren’t doing anything wrong otherwise..
@olbuddyolpal1205 жыл бұрын
Melody Beall What breed is he? See my reply to Jac above and take a look at the dogtime website’s wanderlust potential list. Maybe it will be a little comforting to know it’s a common trait for many breeds (even if they are a mix) and you certainly aren’t alone! To both of you: Because your dogs know they can get out, run, and avoid listening, you need to be proactive as much as reactive. How are their obedience skills? You can play impulse control games to build up inhibition which can then be used in general. But you can’t just do this in the home or they will not listen in the highly distracting and exciting outside world. Practice everywhere. Form a solid recall. Try invisible fencing if you must, install a better or double doors if you must. I think anything is worth it to avoid the dangers they could face.
@animalobsessed15 жыл бұрын
Don't wait for him to run. Keep a leash next to the door and always leash him before opening it. Additionally, it would be pretty helpful if you taught him an alternative behavior, such as going to his crate before you open the door, or just a down stay (though proofing that is actually more difficult in my opinion, than just sending the dog to the crate).

So true, we humans get so upset when we are going to lose something and think that screaming and acting up will somehow get the message of our concern into their head, I see the same behavior with kids and their parents when the kids do something undesirable. It is hard, I have a very active dog and she can be very hyper, pushy, and not listen but over a long time we have taught her a lot, they have to work through so much to understand us and our world but we must realize they do want to have our world and be with us. I love Emily's info it really teaches a lot. I noticed when I am tired or not well is when I say and do things that confuse my dogs and kids, so that time I try to not react and try to breath and think first really hard, most times it works but sometimes we humans just lose it and make no sense. Just take a time out, breath, pray and start again, I always try to remember to forgive myself and others to move forward. My dog is a service dog so we have train her to be bomb proof and that is tough because some things she has to respond to, like the word NO. She has to realize she will have to be around others not just me and even though I use the positive approach because I see and know that works, I also teach no-no or uh-uh, or tsk-tsk sounds, so she alerts and tries to see what goes on. She is almost always with me but if she is with others she has to know that others may behave in the less desirable way and how she can work through it. She is a shepherd/collie cross so she is bred to react and push and steer, so I have to take that drive and teach her where to put it, so you can imagine she and I can bump heads a lot quite literally and so I learned to train in lots of small amounts and wow it does pay off. It is hard but so worth it, everyone stays safe then, and that is the goal, just a peaceful and as positive as we can get. I know losing my pup would be heartbreaking. Why have a shy fearful little dog now and she can be a challenge but we have all tried to not get aroused by her antics as it is out of fear and training her has taught her where home is and how we love her. Keep sharing Emikly we love this channel.

Kinda hard to keep your emotions in check when your dog runs into a busy road where a lot of cars go through the only thing that stops these cars from going is a stop light . I have never hit my dog and can count on one hand the number of times I have allowed myself to raise my voice to her. However I do get frustrated when she does this and I am sure she picks up on it and knows I’m annoyed so this video had very good advice.
@kikopup4 жыл бұрын
Everyone has their triggers that make them annoyed. When dogs run away its scary and stressful. Actually I didn't mention this in this video, but I train my dogs also when I run at them full speed it means nothing. You can train this while working on a stay, you run away and then run strait at them and then give a treat. Because sometimes when dogs have never seen you run fast at them before and they are loose they can get weirded out. Another thing I do is when I get annoyed at stuff I just go and toss treats to my dogs. I get frustrated with my computer sometimes especially when it crashes and deletes my work, and when I do that I go and feed all my dogs a treat so now when I get annoyed they all look expectant of a treat.

No amount of shouting would stop him. 2 cars braked and missed him and we finally got him. And all I could do was praise him whyen he came to me. All of the other times wherever he is, he would come to me when I whistle . Now I have to lock him in the back yard. And build a better fence across the front of the property.

Great video! When our German shepherd was about 4 months old, her collar broke loose and she ran into the park; I got nervous right away but stayed calm. I knew that chasing her wouldn't be right; she would think it's play time. I used the high pitched voice and knelt down and she came close but not close enough. I started to walk away from her, talking to her as I did. Luckily, she followed me home, 2 blocks. She always stayed about 10' from me, which was nerve wracking. Bought a new collar with a safety collar as well for backup.

I adopted a terrier mix in Feb 2021 that was a stray. I have been working a lot with her and the stray actions are still deep in her. If she somehow gets out and is off leash, she 50% won’t come to me even with a sweet voice that is fun and excited to go something trying to interest her in my activity. I will shuffle my feet and run another direction, up nearby stairs or down a nearby street, in a neighbors yard. And if that doesn’t work I do walk in the same direction but apart from her, on the other side of the street and look away when she looks at me, ignore her. I now always carry a loud bag with high quality treats hoping maybe food / treats would have her come to me: half that time I squat and wait for her shaking the treat bag . Most of the time I do calmly approach her or ask her playfully if she enjoyed her adventure. Today is the 3rd day in a row she’s ram away on her independence adventure- 2 were from someone left the backyard gate open and today she started exploring the perimeter of dog park. I tried 3 times today to go In another direction or interest her in the agility course. No go, so I could only go in the same direction. Sprint in that direction when she’s not looking and then walk looking away when she looks. One person tried to create a barrier ahead of her and that only made her run further away. Luckily one cyclist stopped near her and just looked at her which made her come in my direction. That’s when I squatted with treats and she came to me. Bummer tonight I scolded her yes I thought that help her understand that wasn’t good dog, I watched her recoil and then I immediately gave her praise and treats instead. She will only stay with me on trail hikes yet in the first 29 minutes or so she won’t generally come to me. It’s like she needs to get out some independent energy before she’ll come. It’s a bummer because now I won’t take her to our local dog park that doesn’t have a fully fenced area or allow her off leash at all until I have retrained her to come to me. It’s hard to take away her off leash privileges when we hike because she’s such a happy dog running around, smelling and exploring when we’re hiking together.

Thanks! I've had to use these tips twice 😅. This morning she got away and I stayed calm. She was far off, but watching/waiting on me. I played dead, and she ran right to me haha. The zig zagging, not yelling, not running, and playing dead all worked in combination. Note: if your dog doesn't care to check on you if you play dead, this may not help 🤣🤣

My Labradoodle just ran out of the house about 30 minutes ago. My parents ended up catching him but sometimes he spends an hour outside, running around the neighborhood. I used to catch him by falling and pretending to cry because it would make him concerned and come over to me. We’ve just given up chasing him (since he is VERY) fast and wait for him to come back. He is very stubborn and won’t listen to us if we try to call him or call him with a treat. 😔 it always stresses me out and I always end up crying because my dog ran out.

For your dogs health and information Heres what i did the first and last time my max ran away, yes my actual max pug almost ran away, it was about 3:00 or 4:00 a clock, my mom was useing the vaccum cleaner, max the pug pup jetted, lucky for me i understood one thing 4 or 6 months before and that was you have to keep your puppy inside at first and tell him or her at the same time as your other person whos holding him to not go outside while you hold the puppy on the floor in a bear hug or in just the air should be an adult doing this, dont open the door until pup is secured or get a crate and show him or her this so we repeated this process and kept the puppy inside until the day of realisation 6 months later that this was his home with us, however as i said, puppy jetted, vaccum cleaner, so the first thing i did was yell loudly in a whimper, i mean a whimper yell that was like a dogs, found max pug puppy dog at the bottom of the stairs, curlyed up in a ball , waiting for me to pick him up, im a guy, he got it, keep in mind dogs are tricky, when you hold them dow on the floor dont strangle them but its posible that they can slip out of your hands, showing them with crate is better but if you have to grab your dog suddenly from running away, do it, this is in a weird situation only, get a fitted harness not a collar, futhermore look at how the place your going to limits the ownership of dogs, if they dont allow dogs where you live then dont live there one of these days, move, tell your landowner that limiting the ownership of dogs isnt good for our country on the way out if you catch my drift.

And I always tell him not to sound upset or mad when he's trying to get them and to also not punish them when they do come to him because doing that is basically teaching them the opposite of what you're trying to and that is if you come to me you're going to get in trouble? I mean it doesn't make any sense but I see people do this all the time. And yet they wonder why their dogs don't come to them when called. Great video

Story time One day me and my family went to our cottage and my mom decided to bring our dog and our dog has never been to the cottage so he was really excited when we got there and I’m pretty sure my dad took him off his leash for some reason and there was a pretty busy road literally right beside the cottage so my dog was running straight towards the road and i was scared out of my mind so out of panic i started chasing him screaming his name for him to come back but by the time i caught up a bit he was already on the fricking road and there was a car coming right towards him and thankfully he got blessed and the car literally breaked right next to his face and then he kept running and at some point turned back until one of my family members caught him but the thing that pissed me off was that i was the only one that was trying to catch him and some of the others even thought it was funny and i got super mad but anyways there’s your story

We had 3 dogs. 2 we got a month or so ago. The the oldest one we had, Princesita, was a free spirit and ran out the door 70% of the time the doors was left open. She just loved to run around and sniff. I would always be terrified she would get hit by a car....sometimes I would yell at her because I was scared for her. Well about 6 weeks ago she ran out the door for her usual free experience and I'm always mad when she does that because she could get hurt. Well this time for some reason she went too far and was on the road as a car came... She died instantly thank God so she felt no pain. I do remember holding her little body in my arms and seeying those little eyes which would never look at me again and sobbing and sobbing. My mom loved her, it was the first dog she truly ever loved and my dog had looked at my mom the split second before she got hit. Yes my mom was bawling pretty hard. We buried her that day on the property we had just moved into a week or 2 earlier. A Chihuahua/Pomeranian mix. She was about 3 years old. Rest in Peace my little baby I hope I'll see you in heaven one day. ♥️💔 Now I bought a course for the 2 remainder dogs (as now they are still puppies) and I won't make the same mistakes I made with Princesita. I hope to train them so that they never die a sudden death, I wish them to die a natural death from old age instead. God Bless y'all and the puppies and doggies which make our lives so much more complete. ♥️🐕

Oh my god😢... Today my dog 5 months old she started chasing an old man, i told him to stop walking so I could catch her but all he did was to keep walking and laughing. We were starting getting close to the road, the man wouldn't stop walking and my dog was already on the road barking and chasing the man, she almost got hit by a car I cried so much into thinking I could've lost her. I was lucky bc there was a house close to the road which had a dog outside, my dog is pretty sociable so she ran onto the dog. If it wasn't that dog i don't know if I would ever catch her or if she would survive. This was my lesson to teach her before letting her be free.

Dogs love a good actor. I learned a long time ago it's ok to get mad at your dog just don't act on it. My dog knows when I'm mad at him he also knows that if he listens I'll put that aside and praise him for doing what I want. It's amazing when he senses I'm upset he'll stare at me waiting for a command. I don't think I've yelled or spoke at my dog in an angry manner in 5 years. Pretty simple really. It would probably work with my teenagers too, but they're to good at slamming my buttons.

My Spitz dog is 3.5 years old. When off the leash, she doesn't stay; she just runs and runs. A few months ago, I left the door open, and she ran away. I only noticed it an hour later. I spread the news on Facebook, and 4/5 of us were searching continuously. Later, a Facebook friend gave a hint. Luckily, I found her after 24 hours in a neighbor's village. Since then, I'm afraid of letting her off the lease. I've tried some training, but it's challenging at this age. I think I made a mistake not teaching her in her early age. If anyone has ideas on training an older dog, please share.

Do you have any advice on a dog who has a pretty high preydrive? My dog rarely runs away, BUT it has happened some times and it has always been whenever she's off leash, and she spots a wild animal. She usually listens to me very very well, have great contact, but a wild animal triggers her like crazy and the issue is, that she gets completely deaf, lol. Even if I call for her, happy voice, she's just chasing the animal which is very scary, since she could run to a road or whatever, which is my biggest fear!! She will come running back to me, very happy and ready to get on leash, but at that moment I'm so freaking scared and upset because WHAT IF I LOST HER. So I actually very rarely have her off leash anymore, so it hasn't happened in about a year. I just don't know if this is something that can be trained or if I have to have her on leash forever. It only happens with wild animals. And as I said, she just gets deaf. Doesn't hear ANYTHING, she just chasing. And she's soooo fast. Any advice?

Michelle Shannie that’s exactly what my dog does! As soon as he sees a rabbit or squirrel, he’s locked on and won’t pay attention to anything else. but every time after he loses the animal, he comes back. Something else that’s a good idea is a light up collar. I have one that you can make blink a green light, so when he runs we can always see the light since he blends in well. This also works in daylight! :)

Yes. So important to proof the recall with distractions kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3q1ZICqibisf9k If it makes you feel better, some people struggle with hunting and herding breeds... hunting breeds taking off after prey, and herding breeds taking off after cars to herd lol. Safest thing is to have the dog on a harness and dragging long line. And the perk of having a little dog is that if they did take off on the long line and you had the end of it , you wont be swept off your feet and break your hip. There are lots of little dog perks :)

These are great suggestions for most dogs. However, I have a pointer that has never, ever been punished or scolded or collar grabbed on recall and could not care less where I am when she gets (accidentally) off-leash. She runs at top speed everywhere and runs happily off in the opposite direction the second I call her. She has a great recall on a 35-foot longline due to tens of thousands of rewarded repetitions.I've done with her every day since I got her as a puppy. I've heavily marked and reinforced on-leash check-ins, but when she is on a jaunt, she couldn't care if I left the country. entirely. If she's not on a long line, running fast is the most reinforcing thing ever, and all her good habits go straight out the proverbial window. Luckily I taught her to stop on command and down, and this is the only way to catch her. I live in the moment and am absolutely overjoyed to catch her. If you have any further advice, I welcome it.

That is good advice if your dog is not terrified. I went to Petco with my dog. She got scared and pulled out of her collar and ran out the door into the parking lot. She's scared of people and not used to going to Petco yet. The groomer wanted to know her weight, so I tried to luer her onto the scale. She got one paw on a scale and bolted. I went after her the best I could and one of the associates tried to help and came out with treats. It took About 20 minutes to catch her. Because we tried to lure her to us with treats because she is very food oriented But that didn't work So I tried to get her to look at me and the treat and get her to chase the treat after throwing a number of treats we finally got her into the store. By the way, she wouldn't have gotten completely out of the store if the customer leaving the store had realize a dog was running up behind him and stopped before the second set of doors got a chance to open.

The door exercise can also be a life saver. Start with your inside doors (bathroom, bedrooms, etc) before moving to the outside door. Every single door you come to, sit wait . It should look like the dog is inside until you go outside or through the door first, dog is still sitting until you give their release word (preferably something other than OK and other than praise). Eventually if you practice this for every single door you come to, you won't have to say sit, wait, because that's the only way the door gets opened - including car doors. To get there, sit wait, hand goes on the doorknob, butt comes up. Hand off doorknob, sit wait. Then might turn the doorknob before the butt gets up. Hands off knob, sit wait. Now you can open it a crack before butt gets up. Close door, hands by side, sit, wait. I usually don't use treats at the doors because the reward is going in/out of the door. Emergency recall - truck is coming, I need you here immediately if not sooner: This for me is dog's name, Come! Really high pitched. I Never call the dog to me to do something they don't like - toe nail trim, bath, time to leave the park, etc. I never make them feel bad about coming to me even when practicing stays or waits for obedience - no sighs, etc. I also teach my classes, do not overuse this command - no more than 3 times/day - you're making filet mignon - dog's name, Come! High level treat every single time you practice it - no exceptions because the time you need to use it in real life you won't have the high level treat. Lots of praise - they chose you over a squirrel! Kind of like fine dining. Your other recall is a more informal one: 'mere - meaning, just need to see your face. The first 4 weeks of the 6 week class we only work on the enthusiasm for coming to you! If you allow jumping this is where it comes in handy - oh yeah, I get to jump on Mom - you can eventually get the screech halt at the end, but for now just build that enthusiasm. No sits at the end til week 5 and then 6 is graduation. Check out Leslie Nelson's Tails You Win method too. First day of class is always Suzanne Clothier's Automatic Check In.

My dog did that too. one of the people in my community has a bug zapper lantern outside on their back porch and whenever they turn it on she freaks and runs home. Or if she hears a gunshot or a loud noise.
