Super helpful! The same strap used to tie the Yak down to the truck, needs to be transferred to the yak while in the water. GOT IT!!!!

This was the best tip I've seen on righting a flipped kayak. This will go into practice immediately. This should also be a part of any / every kayaking safety course.

In Jamaica, my x would not lean into the waves and flipped our kayak 3 times, I climbed in & pulled him in all three times, thank God the tour guide finally got him a separate kayak.

A strap is something I need to get just in case. My kayak is much smaller and it's one you sit inside of. I haven't tried it yet but you'd think a smaller kayak would be harder to get back into.
@roadtripangler
@roadtripangler 5 ай бұрын
Actually sometimes they are easier unless you’re talking about one that has a really small cockpit like a white water or touring kayak. They take a bit different technique and some times even a friend.

My instructors all taught first step is grab your boat, stay with your boat! If you have to choose between your paddle or your boat go to the boat. It's good to have a spare paddle for situations like this.

I have a sit in kayak and I worry about not being able to get myself over such a big lip, I haven’t flipped.. yet
@roadtripangler
@roadtripangler 7 ай бұрын
For sure try it in a safe spot. There are some other methods that work well for sit in where you hook your leg over but it can be hard depending on how closed off the cockpit is. If possible, it could be easier to swim your kayak to shore, but that is not always an option.

It wouldn't apply to this style of kayak due to it being open as you need to be inside to brace your knees keeping you in, have a look for white water kayak rolls you will see some good videos for that

Why not make a safety strap from a cargo strap for just that reason and keep it rolled up and attached to your PFD
@roadtripangler

I’m old and not flexible. If I can’t touch the floor, I’m just swimming however far it takes to get to the shore sadly. I probably shouldn’t kayak but… I love being on the water!
@roadtripangler

I think that is why it is important to have a “just in case” plan. Like paddling with others or staying closer to shore if you can’t self rescue. These things can keep you safe and enjoying what you love at the same time!!

Bad advice. If you have ever uprighted a jet ski you would loop your hands and arm over the top of your topside down like your strap and just pull it back over. No one is finding paddles and straps after flipping all there gear. I could 100% show everyone a better actually life saving method. If you have a kayak look at videos of how to upright jet skis by yourself.
@roadtripangler
@roadtripangler 5 ай бұрын
By all means post it up. We are certified instructors. This is not something we just made up and put out there. You have to stay calm and locate your paddle or getting back on the kayak will leave you with no means of moving it and you only need the strap if you have a wide boat and it is hard to flip. I too have a jet ski and they are not the same.
