There was a guy in our neighborhood that apparently won the lottery about 15-20 years ago for 5 or 6 million and no one ever knew (except his close family) until he died. His kids grew up with me and I ever knew they had money like that, y’know. No one did. He continued life as is from what we all saw. He ran a small grocery story prior to winning, and everyone just assumed he saved money from all the years working to remodel and add a bakery. His wife opened a greenhouse nursery (she passed away a year before he did, but it’s still open under family) … the rest he saved for his kids, invested some in stocks, and bought some land. Only thing “fancy” he ever had that I remember seeing him in was a brand new John Deer tractor. That’s it lol. They drove the same old Buick and old Chevy truck they had prior, lived in the same old 2-story cabin they had for years, never changed the way they dressed. That’s the way to do it. You stay low, don’t tell anyone that you don’t plan to give money to, and you definitely don’t run around showing off how you’re new money. Play it smart if you’re going to play at all.

And that's why people should make a savings account already while they are kids and learn to save and deposit money without just spending it immediately from a young age. When I was a kid, my piggy bank wasn't just where I stored candy money. I put money in it and then when it was full I'd go to the bank with my parents and deposit it. I'm not rich, and I don't make a high wage, but I have enough savings by now that practically nothing could happen that could make me lose it all in one go.

letting anyone know you won a major lottery sounds like the most nerve wracking thing ever. I've heard of best friends, family members, siblings, spouses, etc. turning cruel/deadly for less of a motive. and whatever you do, DON'T show up to claim without hiding your face and some security (unless you are ready to defend yourself bc that's akin to walking around with thousands/millions of dollars in your back pocket).

I already decided a long time ago that if I won the lottery that I wouldn't tell anyone. There’s also funeral parasites. When my father died, his family came around offering to help with the funeral and they phrased it like this “oh don’t worry, you need to rent chairs, I have chairs. No need to go spending money now.” I thought “wow, these ppl are actually really nice.” After the funeral, they posted bills to me for extortionist prices. You’re in your grief and these funeral parasites will take advantage of you. Do not allow any family to help unless it’s clear that it’s free or you agree on the cost beforehand. Get your most trusted friends to help you make those decisions if you’re in a bad state of mind. “What’s it going to cost me?” - make that your first question. Always said to my hubby, we aren't telling anyone, call lawyer and accountant and wait until we set shit up. Great advice on taking pictures of the ticket. I'm going make sure this is added to the list. As for giving money to friends and family, I figured around 20% but not all at once. I'd also set up a charitable donations account (if accountant and lawyer agree) to donate to worthwhile, mostly local, charitable organizations. Having been a part of a 50C3 charity, I found out how much of the donations are to pay charity members. I was shocked. Now I donate to local groups with the best percentage going to be used as intended. If I'm unsure at the moment, I'd rather donate tangible items like food or pet supplies.

In the UK we don’t pay taxes on lottery winnings or gambling winnings… because they’re WINNINGS not EARNINGS. Edit: we pay an ungodly amount of taxes for everything else though 😂

No accountants. Get a tax attorney. They can handle all of the legal issues and are bound by attorney client privilege.
@ClintUdy Жыл бұрын
Your first point, spot on. Second, contact an attorney and set up the trust to claim the winnings. Take the annuity, not the bulk. The trust can recieve for the duration and you guarantee an annual income. Then any money provided to friends or family should come with an NDA with heavy penalties for violation. Limit it to a predetermined (prior to playing) amount and keep it equal to avoid any issues with unfairness should it get out. Any investments you make should be done with a fiduciary. Set up a nonprofit for donations and charity.

None of my nonexistent friends are getting any money. And neither are my family f that. I'm buying a chunk of property for myself then a couple rentals. The number of which is Depending on how much I win. Then the rest will get put into investment and just around half a mil or more in my bill paying account. A couple hundred each into a retirement account of some sort for me, my wife, and both kids.

People really do change. Anytime I tell someone that I own my own house at such a young age, it changes their tone towards me. Their response is usually “wow…and you’re how old?” It’s an awkward feeling. So I just don’t tell people around me anymore. I just say “my place”. Humans are freaking weird and hostile little creatures.
@JanJan-uf9mv Жыл бұрын
How is complimenting your achievements with remarks such as “wow… and you’re how old?” Bad. I think you are the hostile one.
@BeautifulDreamerK Жыл бұрын
@kimchi- if everyone else is gonna weird then I’ll be that random stranger on the internet to give you a big congratulations! That’s a big accomplishment. Also, I identify a lot with that. I stay low key bc I know the reactions and feel the attitudes when my good news ever comes out. Anyhoo, owning a house is a big deal and I hope you are proud of yourself. You’ve accomplished something that not many people can ❤
