That's probably the thing you should do - never give up. If you're in a situation with no way out and you give up, you surely die. If you're in a situation with no way out and you don't give up, you die. Or you make it. If you then die, you don't lose anything you wouldn't have lost if you'd have given up. But if you didn't give up, you might maybe by a miracle still make it. Yes, there's a place and time when one isn't making it anymore. But not giving up simply means not artifically lowering your chances.

Real problem is to find the one out of the thousands who are just not capable of such a feat. It's about picking harmony. One weak spot in a team will doom everyone. So yeah, they will 100% struggle. Especially in those days we live in. And if you aren't an engineer or some kind of doctor or pilot it doesn't even matter if you have the mental and physical abilities because no one is interested to send the average Joe to mars.

I sailed the weddel sea on an antarctic expedition and got stuck in the ice for a few days. It was from the comfort of a modern research icebreaker ( 19:08 left panel, RV Polarstern) so i can not even begin to fathom the danger and uncertainty Shakleton and his crew were facing. There was talk around the ship that worst case scenario we would be stuck for a few weeks until the ice drift spits us out into the open ocean allowing us to sail back to Chile. But there was no concern whatsoever. There was only slight annoyance at the possibility of not being back home in time.

I read that book a couple of years ago, and was so moved by it I recommended it to everyone I know... It's rare to get unanimous praise for a book recommendation... Astounding the circumstances and the only casualty was one foot.... Such a wild story. Having read other stories of similar situations, i.e. "Labyrinth of Ice" by Buddy Levy, It's so remarkable how well Shackleton and his crew handled their own survival, comparatively. Thank you for making this video. This is a story well worth telling.

I am glad you included the most incredible fact, but underdid the emphasis. The trip from Elephant Island to South Georgia was a direct hit, crossing 800 miles of southern ocean in an open boat. Can you imagine the skill of the navigator to even take a sextant reading? When they could even see the sun that is, in a pitching boat. Sextant readings have to be at the same time each day so this is as incredible as any other part of this story - I think the only other element that comees close is the crossing of South Georgia itself. Frank Worsley was a New Zealander who captained the Endurance.
