Great video. And thanks for getting RIGHT TO THE POINT instead of prattling on like so many do. We gardeners are busy & generally want the information, not somebody's life story, LOL. Despite a late, cold spring here in SW Montana, I have loads of zucchini already. Which is surprising because most of the leaves froze in mid-June & I thought it would take forever for them to recover. Looking forward to filling my freeze dryer with zucchini multiple times. Though I'm not having trouble with my plants not producing, I will try your trick just to boost my already great production. I am in western Washington, my first round of starts did not come up, I don’t know why. So I had to re-start about 4-6 weeks later than ideal. But they are coming along great now. I am going to have to find some folks to share my excess squash, and cucumbers with. Same thing with my cucumbers, I am tossing the remainder of those seeds and buying new.

Your very welcome 🙏🏾🌱 with Squash vine borers I use Neem oil , and manually remove eggs .. I removed over 30-40 eggs already.. If the fruit is pollinated and the flower falls two or three days after it will still grow..

How do you determine the male flower before it opens up?

Normally the flower would have a lot of green on it but once you see the flower is getting more yellow and it looks more puffy then come the next morning it will open... I will check my garden, see if I have any flower but almost open and we'll do a short video

Great video, I know from personal experience this works as I've been using it for years. What I have found to grow more female flowers is to cut 1/3 of the male flowers off. If you stay on top of doing you'll never run out of squash or zucchini

Remember that the male flowers are edible, as well as the tips and leaves! Eat more of the plant; added nutrition.

The plants start by producing male flowers. That attracts bees to the pollen. When the female flowers appear, the bees are in the habit of visiting the plant to collect pollen and the first female flowers are more likely to get pollinated.

I'm Italian and what we do with the male flowers we take them and we make patties out of them you just clean them and cut them up in little pieces use some flowers some water a little bit of salt garlic parmesan cheese you mix it all together you get a skillet and you put oil in it and you let the oil get hot and then you just drop the drops of off of a spoon into the hot oil and it makes patties and then you eat them and they're really really good we use the male flowers but we always leave one or two male flowers to pollinate female if there are any female

No! When males blooms open, clip them, batter, and deep fry. I live in Arizona, and there are baskets used only for squash blossoms. I can see clipping to force female flowers to form.

My squash started yesterday blooming and ALL ARE MALE ….I have a LOT of male buds to LOL so I trimmed some of the budding males and wait until I know for sure the small unbud heads are truly males. They are almost in clusters.

Great video, I have been doing this for some time, but never real gave it much thought. The reason is in my house we all love fried Zucchini flowers, by the way the ones you trimmed don't throw them away. Try fried flowers you're in for a treat. So, each plant I would take off male or female which ever I to many of and use them for frying. so, this is why I really never had much issue with this, but thanks for the tip. I had people ask me about it but told them I never had this problem.

Same thing for pumpkin too .. This means you need to increase the fertilizer and calcium also make sure you're not overwatering water , water pumpkin plants every 3 days .. You could add bloodborne or garden tone for fertilizer and use organic garden lime for calcium .. amzn.to/44HNXfF (Amazon)#ad

I was wondering if there was some solution - I will give this a try. I have been overwhelmed with male flowers and almost zero females. One other idea is to pop your cut male flowers into a zip loc bag and keep them in the freezer so if you get a healthy female flower you can hand pollinate it with your saved males. I don't know. My zuccinis are producing a lot of both, but they are not syncing at all. I have females opening while males even below on the stem just dltaking the time then when they are ready there is no female ready in sight. I can't even cross pollinate both of them are crazy. Can someone advise? I can't get males from my community. Should I prune the leave and the failed fruit both, or just leave the leave but remove the failed fruit? Which one is better. Both plants are doing great. No disease, all good vigor, but extremely poor syncing. 😢

I'm so sorry to hear that but I would definitely remove any failed fruit that could prune out 2 to 3 lower leaves.. I will definitely increase the fertilizer and make sure your watering every 2 to 3 days. Increase the calcium in the plant , lack of calcium is one of the main thing James squash plant.. Try to get a paintbrush in the morning time and hand pollinate , taking pollen from the male flower and apply to the female .. ( morning time). Wish you best of luck ! I know you got this 🌱

I think I messed up by cutting too many male flowers off🥴 But, all my squash (zucchini, yellow, butternut and spaghetti) are proliferating like crazy. Not really messing the plant up. You're just going to have to a while as the plant and I was going to start to grow male and female flowers.. I would say increase the fertilizer so this way you keep the plant more healthy for females..

My squash plants have not been producing. It's the first time EVER! One plant only produced males. Another one all females that grew about an inch and then died. So, I pulled them out today. Thanks for the information about the female flowers and make flowers. I have a pumpkin plant growing only female flowers for 2 years. I know it’s a pumpkin because it’s in a pot. The seeds were called heirloom jacks, and the seeds were very old. Like maybe around 10 years old. Same plant been trying to get it to make a male flower. I’m not sure if I should try to start cutting some of the female flowers. Im growing a new pumpkin plant right now.

You could always leave some of the male to attract some bees, but if you have over 10 male flowers , Remove at least four to five of them.. If you don't remove these male flowers, it takes a long time before you could see a female because some pumpkin plants will grow male flowers for a long time..

I did this and still got make flowers. I cut back on fertilizer. The plant is growing soo big just no female on squash nor zucchini. I don’t knw what to do. Fall is coming and I have no fruit yet😢

Try to prune, remove some leaves and remove half of the male flowers and I would say increase the fertilizer right away .. This will speed up the grown process so you can get a harvest before fall 🙏🏾🌱

@@Greentgarden so it worked. I saved a male flower. Cut the stem long and it stayed fresh. Used it 2 days later and the female/squash is growing and not drying up. So far looks like success!

Mine stopped making male and female flowers! I have fed, put in calcium to stop blossom rot and water consistency but all I am getting is canopy! No squash bugs. It has been so hot here in AZ would that be why?

Sorry to hear, So definitely the humidity and the heat plays a big part of this , In AZ it's super hot there 🥵 When the weather is that hot it stresses the plants and basically slow down the Production alot ... Soon as the weather comes down your production will get better. Just keep doing what you are doing.. 🌱🙏🏾

Lol Lots of people deep Fry those flowers and they love it.. try to remove some of the male flowers. If you have too much and prune off to lower leaves that should speed up the growing process. Bring it in some fem...

Sorry to hear , definitely water could affect this , if you over water or under water.. also lack of calcium.. increase the calcium ( I use garden lime) try water every 2-3 days , If it's in the high 80s to 90°, definitely water one to two days lightly

On one side of my house I have pollinators around my zucchini plants and both plants have plenty of female flowers. Whereas the other side of my house I have no pollinators around and all 4 plants are producing tons of male flowers. You think the plants can sense a lack of pollinators?

Yeah that is strange because the male flowers should have attracted more bees, try adding a lavender plant or Borage plant that will help attract them and more bees .. or even add bee box ..

It's always best to prune off the lower leaves and leave the upper ones. You do want to leave back about 8 to 10 leaves on a plant.. Basically you don't want to over prune and stress the plant out... 🌱🙏🏾
