There is one thing that goes through my head every time I start planning a big job and that is the 6Ps "Prior Planning Prevents P!$s Poor Performance". So the first two things I ask myself is "How bad could this be if it fails?" and "What could cause this to fail?". The answers to both questions will then help me create appropriate contingency plans for almost any foreseeable occurances. That being said, there are always things that come out of the blue but again prior planning can help mitigate the damage when something does happen.

In Colorado Springs, we haven't had any electrical grid outages YET. But my preparation was to modify the power input for my furnace. It was previously direct-wired to a nearby junction box. I installed an outlet in the junction box and replaced the romex wire with a male power plug. If the power fails, all I need to do is plug my furnace power into an extension cord from the generator and my home will stay warm (hopefully, the natural gas service won't be affected by the power outage). By the way, if you use a gas generator, you must do two things. First, sometime in the Fall make sure it's running. Second, ALWAYS run it completely dry of gasoline - gas left in the fuel system causes varnish and the main reason why you can't get your generator started.

As a Plumber, I installed a shut off valve 5 ft feet back from my hose bibs, so when the first frost comes, all I have to do is shut it off in the wall, and open the hose bib to drain ot and I have 5 ft of frost free protection, rather than the usual 1 ft or less, depending on how cheap the builder was. Also, I installed a 1/4 turn ball valve for the main shut off valve, installed a PRV (Pressure Reducing Valve), as my house pressure as 85 psi (normal range is 60 - 72 psi), and then an isolation valve above that. That way, if I ever have to repair or replace the PRV, I don't have to drain my entire two story house. Insulating the pipes, as you mentioned, is also an awesome prevention method. If you have copper or galvenized steel pipes (hopefully not the latter, as the corrode horribly) you can also install electric heat tape on pipes in crawl spaces, but it is best to have a Plumber do that - incorrectly installed it can be useless. If installed on plastic pipes, it can melt through them. Awesome tips and informative video for people who don't know how to prepare!

To prevent frozen pipes (if not on a well with a pump), simply open a faucet and allow a trickle of water to run. This reduces pressure within pipes & moving water is much less likely to freeze, it is unless extremely cold.

And for those of us in the west, we have natural gas. With a natural draft standing pilot WH, no need for power. And we can get a nat gas generator which can power the house which won't break the bank.
@itsgalf2 жыл бұрын
I think you would still need power to energize the gas valve open and for the controls to turn the flame on and off when heat is needed. Unless you can manually open and close the gas valve when needed.
@98ek92 жыл бұрын
@itsgalf the gas valve is controlled by a thermocouple. No power needed. If you have a standing pilot water heater that is.

A 500 watt generator will power most household air handler fans. If you have gas heat, install a transfer switch in the electrical line that powers your furnace. Your house will be warm for very little energy usage. With a relatively small generator it would be possible to keep your refrigerator and furnace running in a power outage.

I love your videos and find them so informative, but as an electrical engineer, the bit about sizing your generators based on power consumption is quite misleading. I'd consider adding some annotation or linking to a solar/electric focused channel. Mostly watts are a measure of power (energy over time, joule per second), it does not make sense to divide by hours. Usually watt hours are a multiplicative unit of energy (e.g 3600 joules). Very good callout to explain sustained vs peak load as well.

8:00 Do not, under any circumstances, daisy chain generators UNLESS it is specifically rated to parallel like the Honda EU's in your picture or you have an equivalent parallel kit. There are frequency and phasing implications that make this very dangerous without the proper equipment.

I have a wood stove, propane generator, gas heat, and heat pumps. I can easily go a week with no utilities. City water redundancy is a bit tricky. I've seen large well systems contaminated upon loss of power because the pressure dropped. I do this stuff professionally for commercial customers.

Unfortunately, covering only the pipes does not protect the valve from freezing. The valve will freeze and crack just as fast as a copper pipe, which lessens the effectiveness of pipe insulation on your system.

Just wanted to let you know that "Watts/hour" is not the correct unit. It's just "Watts" which is a measure of power or 'energy per unit of time'. More specifically a Watt is equivalent to 1 Joule/second. Electrical meters measure total energy use. They arent measured in Joules here, instead they use Watt-hour, which is the same as 3600 Joules.
