Either be down there early or try to get on of the first tickets if they are offering them the night before

Josh, I highly recommend that you seek scuba lessons and certification in the states, if that is something you in which you are interested. Old lady here, but I got certification in the 80s and dived Cozumel, Cayman and Bonaire. Those were some of the best experiences of my life. Safe travels!

Absolutely considering it! We hear all the time about diving at Cozumel and Bonaire!

@travelwithjoshandtaylor They will give you a quick lesson and "certify" you in Cozumel. Don't do that. To keep yourself safe, you really need the 6 week course in the US. Classroom theory plus pool time, followed with open water testing.

How would you recommend keeping your valuables (like phone or cell phone) safe while everyone is in the water snorkeling?

We leave it on the boat while we are snorkeling. I’m not sure what you mean by safe? No one is going to be going through your bags.
