Strasbourg is amazing. Frugal travelling means that you are there really just to see and experience everything around you and in doing so, you gain a really different experience than people who visit a place, just to spend lots of money somewhere else. While we were in Strasbourg, France, we looked at the area outside of town and made a stop or two and then drove in to find a spot to park. When we came up from the underground parking garage, we found ourselves in one of the main areas of the old town, Gutenburg Platz, about one block from the Notre Dame Cathedral which we could see behind the buildings that encircle the main square. Everywhere around were old cobblestone streets, restaurants and cafe's with outdoor terraces and large umbrellas to shade the customers. There was a lovely, colorful carousel that was already in full swing with music and entertainment for the children.
We walked the area and found ourselves in Kleber Platz which is a very large pedestrian area lined with local shops and cafes of every kind. We stopped off at Starbucks where Adrian had his first Chai Latte experience. It is something we cannot get where we live and oddly enough, something we miss and had forgotten just how good they were until we had it that afternoon. We enjoyed that moment, people watching and sipping on cold Chai. When our drinks were all gone we continued walking the square. We found a local market where people were selling old artworks and books in both French and German. As we headed back towards the Cathedral, we found a local ice cream shop and stopped in for a snack. Guess what we found inside! Ben & Jerry's! Who would have guessed that Adrian would have yet another first time experience with an American product - he loved the Cookie Dough ice cream.
There were some street performers in the area just outside of Notre Dame, two were musicians who played a wide variety of live jazz music with their instruments and one entertained children with his feats of magic and mystery. The Notre Dame Cathedral is quite something to behold. The sheer heights of the spires is hypnotising while looking up at them and when you are standing at the street level and looking at it and you know how long ago it was built, it gives you this stunning feeling of true amazement. We waited in a short line outside for our turn to go in where, we first lit candles for all of our family and friends. It seemed that were were walking around with our jaws dropped while we were in there. It was just so beautiful, so full of detailed masonry work and stained glass windows and such a tribute to the beliefs of the people who worked so hard to build it, for so many years, it really is something that no person should miss a trip to see it, if in the area.
Most of the people in the area were also tourists but, there were many who were from the area, going to work or running daily errands. The people who run all of the local shops, restaurants and cafes are hard working to an extreme. They get to work very early, have to do a cleanup of the area outside of their shops, clean their windows, doors, tables, chairs...everything that can be cleaned is cleaned every single day before they can begin selling their wares or providing services for anyone. While I am sure that having a shop of any kind in an area such as this is lucrative, it is also tons of work for the people who own or run them. Strasbourg France is truly a fantastic destination that can be done on a frugal budget. Again here, if you do your research ahead of time you will find great deals on accomodations, entertainment, tours and food.
