What to do when your Painting fails...

Hey everyone, now I'm sure this has happened to every artist at least once. You start a painting, you're in a creative mindset, and then what happens? The painting ends up not looking the way you first imagined it would look. This can happen to anyone. The key is to not give up, it's okay to start fresh. In this video I attempt to fix mistakes I made with this portrait. As you all know I'm an abstract painter, I don't normally do portrait's. But I'm wanting to learn, and success takes time through lots of trial and error!

I soooooo appreciate you being vulnerable!!! I am a new artist and I tried to paint a girl…and it made me feel simply awful!!! It is so good to know that even someone who I consider so talented has struggles. It gives me hope!!

This last one looks like Jackie Onassis -wide eyes. I like the expression. I did Abstract self-portrait which is very loose and kind of wild. I tried several times -then one day it just came together. Thanks for videos. I look forward to them weekly. You are wonderful abstract artist.

When you started painting this, the first thing that I noticed was that she was shifted more towards the left. I personally don't like doing Portraits, but most of what I do is turning out to be portraits. I am fascinated when I see artists having "FUN" painting and enjoying the process. I totally dislike the process but what keeps me going is how the end makes me feel. I much do the forest and floral and still life paintings than Portraits.

Portraits are hard for me but I love applying paint to canvas so I always have fun even when doing portraits....although it may not have seemed that way in the video. I just accept that some turn our good and some are to be painted over.

Dear Gwen, you are ALWAYS fun! One thing about paintings that "don't work out", is that if I release the negativity, and look at it honestly, I will always see something that I really like.......color interaction, mood, texture, etc.. I make a note of that, literally, so I don't forget....hehe. Thank you.

Funny you should post this as I have been doing the repeated start overs with portraits too! 😅 I always learn something great from your videos. It’s taken me a week to understand how I want the eyes to speak. I paint watercolor, so my favorite eyes are by Janet Rogers. Loose and yet draws you in. She also mixes the hair with color blends that can have neutrals. She truely is a muse on portraits of women. Anyway, I hope you find that magic this week! I hope this helps to make us better artists for going through such intense battles of not giving up! Take care and thank you!

Gwen, I think you are WAY too hard on yourself. I loved the paintings. The only thing wrong with the first was the forehead was too high. Remember, you are not doing realism totally, so it WILL look different than peoples art who IS looking for perfection! I paint abstraction realism all the time, I had to realize this same thing. Add color you Normally don't...like blue/purple in shaded areas and more obvious shapes (exaggerated even).

My girls faces always look ugly. Even using the loomis method, my girls are not cute.
