I had two springers, one passed at aged 14 in 2021 and the other aged 16 recently in 2024. I miss them so much, they were amazing dogs! I now have two new working Cockers and now starts the training!

I have a springer, the best thing I did was to almost ignore him when he was hyper, when he was calm I would say “calm” and give affection, in time (I’m talking a year) when I say calm now, he knows to slow down. Making him wait outside after a walk while I make a cup of tea to then invite him into the home also changed the game for me. I noticed almost instantly that he now looks for me to do almost anything. It’s very important to understand that NO is not negative. Saying no to a dog isn’t cruel. It’s essential. I think no should be the most understood command you can give a dog.

Had a Springer, unfortunately after 15 years we had to put him down 😢. High energy? He was a couch potato from day one. Such a great dog and I miss him so much! He was a joy and so easy from the day we brought him home right through the day he left us.

Just gotten a working cocker spaniel a week after losing our Border Collie after 18 years. I'm no stranger at working with Cocker Spaniels as I trained my grand mothers Show Cocker Spaniel to do aguility though she lacked speed but made up for it with accuracy as she always got clean runs. Planning to train this new pup to be an agulity dog currently working on basic obedience on day 1

I had a springer growing up. Decided that my own first family dog would also be a springer, he’s 10 now, our kid is 6. We’ve been talking about adding a puppy. How are older springers with springer puppies? Ours still acts like a teenager at times, but really can’t keep up with hunting and is done after a couple miles these days. Do you wait to add in the new energy of a puppy, or go for it. He has our hearts, just want to do what’s best!

Hi there! Thank you for this amazing video. I know I'm late for the party, commenting 3 years after it was released, but I'd really appreciate to get this info from actual spaniel owners. I don't have a dog just yet, but I've loved everything I've been reading about cocker spaniels. The one thing I'd like to clarify is can two people be equal leaders for this dog? I work from home, so I will be naturally spending more time, give more walks, do most of the training. However, I would really love it if the dog could also see my husband as a leader, providing he does what he can when he's at home in the evenings. Any experience and comments on the topic are welcome, thank you.

I had an American Cocker Spaniel, but I'm looking into getting a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, as I'm disabled and I think a smaller version would be best for me. The cocker is a wonderful dog and was my best friend until he passed away in January 2021 due to cancer of the nose. I want to be extra careful with the next one I get. I want to avoid any of the mistakes I made before. He didn't deserve to go like that. Fortunately, I have an organic, raw dog food store close to me and access to dog training. I don't know how I feel about crates, because I saw how Bentley dealt with them and I don't want to put any puppy through any trauma. I have PTSD from my dad's abuse, and I don't want that for anyone, pets included.

I’m getting a 6 month old springer next week. He is joining our household due to illness of current owner. I have a 3 yr old springer here already, who is the most well behaved, low key dog I’ve ever had. Not that I did anything so special, I think it’s just her personality. I’m a little nervous to introduce these two, she’s been the queen for 3 years. Any tips would be appreciated. Almost all my adult life I’ve had multiple dogs at the same time, I don’t know why I’m nervous.

cocker spaniels always have their nose on the ground. maybe try to place it on a concrete surface, not that many interesting smells. Also having a set schedule to go potty and go potty after eating/drinking, sleeping, play and try to have the same spot where they should go potty. As they say in the video, make sure you have a set schedule. You could also try to link a word command for going potty, my cocker picked it up relatively fast. once he became 12 weeks he would go potty on command. (sorry english is not my first languages)

Really helpful advice thanks. We're about to adopt a springer/setter girl of 5yo. She has basic commands, but her foster carer is still working on potty training, so I will follow your advice to a T on potty training. Any ideas what to do about night time though? I will take her out every hour, reward and praise for each visit, but how will she manage 8h through the night? Any advice? She was an abandoned hunting dog, so very well trained otherwise, but they think her household potty training will need some work because she's most likely lived outdoors.

Hay dude, I’ve owned hyper dogs the latter being a boxer. This is my first spaniel. I get him on the 14th of September. Watched some of your videos, so hyped to get my lil ego. (I’ve named him ego) this is my new best friend for life. I have cats, two that grew up with a staff that past last year. So my cats are used to a dog but she was in her later life and the energy my boxer had is making me make sure this goes perfect. Any tips on introducing? Quick question: You said don't let them sleep on the bed, especially when they're young. When my American cocker spaniel came home, he had terrible separation anxiety, and crate training was a nightmare. He didn't sleep on the bed until he was almost full grown, but he would cry constantly if anyone was out of eyesight. and he was put hit paw up to the cage and cry to come out. He hated being alone. My natural instinct would be to have a puppy on the bed to avoid separation anxiety. Any specific tips on that?
@sophiabeauty9997
@sophiabeauty9997 2 жыл бұрын
Dogs shouldn’t ever sleep on your bed. 1.hygiene purposes 2. As a leader you cannot put your dog on the same level as you they are not children they are dogs and a dog will be a dog.
@debbiesmith2207

I love sleeping with my dog. When he was a baby I put the crate on the bed. I wanted him to be close but not to fall off and get hurt or pee and poo in my bed! As soon as he started jumping on my bed he learned the commands up and off. This has worked for us. Hygiene? archaic nonsense from the 1940s. People with dogs tend to live longer and have a more diverse microbiome. Better functioning immune system, less allergies. Dominance? Another archaic idea. My dog call a golden retriever, doesn't have a dominant bone in his body

Please do your research first. Worker spanners make you reconsider your life. They are in a league of their own. They, are. Bastards!!!!!!!! First two years you need to STICK TO YOUR GUNS!!!!! I cannot express that enough. The only way I can round this up, is that, spanner puppies learn, however, the training tickles into tiny little ravines that slowly & I mean SLOWLY, meet up in the middle which I call their two year old oasis mind of memory. It seems that everything you have trained them slowly gets to that point in their oasis once they’ve sort of come of age. It’s that that makes their brain grow & turn into their memory bank & between 8 weeks & two to two & a half finally seeps into this lovely forever dog you will have but you have to, for two years at least of pulling out your hair, wanting to rehome, questioning yourself & wondering if this is the dog for you. If you are going to be staunch with your rules, then by all means, have a spanner but you must stop & nip in the bud ANY behaviour you don’t want in the future. Great post & good luck everyone. I’m a spanner owner, cocker & Springer, working both, for 20 years. I’ve looked after them, fostered them & have done training for the fosters to be ready for their new home. Cockers & springers are completely different. Cockers are easier at first but become very independent & pig headed after they’ve got to two years, that’s when the really hard work comes, Springers are the opposite. Absolute bastards at the beginning but by 2-3 years are much more imprinted. Cockers suddenly become that teenager that knows EVERYTHING! Pick wisely, do your research. I’ve also found that springers are better in the family home than cockers as an all rounder. Springers in my opinion have been the best family dogs, they love having the fuss as well as out playing ball games, enjoying being out with everyone on their bikes or walks, perfect pub dogs & wonderful white companions for kids that need a special someone that they can read to, cuddle or help with anxiety. They really are an awesome breed once you get past that first two years. Cockers however, love the ball games or they don’t, they are very much black & white. All or nothing. Again, great post & I’m so pleased you made a point of the rules at the very beginning. Any leniency & you’ve made a rod. You need to make sure you are on top of everything at all times but it’s so worth the hard work, tears & uncertainly.🥰
