Thank you for the links. I new I should have used an oxygen absorber. I’ve been meaning to order Mylar bags & oxygen absorbers. Nothing to get you to in motion like a pantry infestation…

Way back when my kids were very young toddlers I had flour that had bugs. I was a single mother and had very little money so I sifted out as much as I could and made bread with it. I suspect we are eating a lot of bugs in many of the foods we eat without knowing anyway and they aren't poison.

The goal is to keep insect consumption to a minimum. Many people are sensitive to or allergic to certain aspects of insect biology.

If I freeze these foods in their original bags, remove them from the freezer while keeping them in their original unopened bags, won’t there be moisture even after a period of time? Or will that dissipate at room temperature? Thanks.

We've been racking our brains trying to figure out how these critters are getting into sealed bags. Thanks for solving the mystery and what to do with them.

Oh, yes. Lots of experience with this. I learned to not go on a bulk buying spree if I don't have time to get it immediately stored correctly. Lots of wasted food to the animals and compost pile over the years. 😢

A few years ago I bought a 5lb bag of mixed bird seed. I kept hearing at night a scratching sound, it drove me mad trying to find out what it was. Eventually I discovered it was the bird seed which was full of weevils. The bag was quickly put outside in a bucket with a lid and I think the local birds enjoyed eating it, weevils and all

I thought I froze my gluten free flour for nine days. I had decanted several small bags into an OXO container in the pantry. I hadn’t used it in a long time, but needed a small amount. When I retrieved it from the pantry, I noticed little bugs running around. My husband couldn’t see them…He took the container outside & left if on a deck chair. After a few days or week, I asked him about the plan. He took them down to the garbage & dumped them in. The bugs are now living their best life at the dump.

Some times you have to freeze it then thaw for 24 hours and refreeze it. The initial freezing kills the bugs. Then the thaw period wakes up the eggs and they hatch. The second freezing kills the new bugs.

I have bought a 50kg bag of organic rice here in the Philippines and many bugs. Shared it with others but sorting through and eliminating bugs was very time consuming. Thanks.

I feed mine to the chickens. However, my grandmother, born 1893, taught me that the reason people used to sift flour was to get the bugs out.

I've only delt with rice weevils once. I put my container in the deep freeze until I used all the rice. Washed the rice well, and it tasted fine.

Yes, I found bugs in my rice about a year ago. That never happened before. I didn't know what to do with it so I threw it out. I did some research and learned that they don't like the smell of bay leaves. So now I add a few bay leaves in with my rice and it has not happened again.

I had a similar issue with kidney beans that were a little moldy from freezing them. I will use them as “seeds” for planting.

I've been prepping for nearly 30 years and I've bought SO much rice in that time. Only one time have I had rice that had bugs in it. I had bought it in a bag that was only burlap (most burlap rice bags usually have a heavy plastic bag liner, this one didn't). It was only a few bugs, we just washed our rice when we prepared it and made sure not to buy that rice again. My favorite brands of rice to buy are the ones that come packaged in mylar.

I live in SE QLD Australia, in subtropical climate. Bugs get into EVERYTHING whether we see them or not. Most of the product we buy from the store have bugs that we just don’t see. So what we do is when I get rice or flour home, I put them straight into the freezer for a minimum of 48-72 hours. Reality is - it ends up being several weeks because I forget it’s even there. Then I get it out of the freezer, I leave it untouched for several days just to make sure there is no moisture in it. And then it can go into whatever container or long term storage without any fear of bugs or eggs as any living matter has died in the freezing process

I use oxygen absorbers in all my pantry containers that run the risk of getting bugs. I also use desiccants in my seasoning jars.

I lived in a foreign country where it was common to find bugs. Bugs in flour, cake mixes, etc. If you wanted to eat, you dealt with it. A fine sieve was an essential. Now if you put the eggs and oil in and things start crawling, that is another matter.

Many good storage tips here but …after growing up with grandparents born in 19th century AND who went thru depression, plus after living in a third world country, I wouldn’t dare toss anything, except if rancid, for just having weevils etc. Freeze to kill live bugs and eggs; sift; and use. However, using some of these tips to store things is smart. I got great deal on icing buckets with snap on lids that have gaskets. Just have to wash super well before using to store. Only $2 each from a bakery! )yeah… this bakery used premade icing… I don’t buy their cakes, just their used buckets!)

You can also prevent this by freezing the grains for 2 weeks before storing. Freezing destroys the eggs.

We live in Florida and have had this problem multiple times even if we freeze or refrigerate the grains prior to sealing. We do the same as others, sift and use what we can. No chickens or pigs here so we don’t have alternatives to feed food too. Your idea of freeze drying and setting up in portions is genius. On a different note would love to touch base with you about your GridDown experience and on ground mount. Blessings😊

Is there a rule of thumb for how many oxygen absorbers to use?
One toe hothands chemical toe warmer can do a 5 gallon pail of whatever you like. The chemicals inside are an aluminum iron alloy, graphite, salt and water. The pack is basically an oxygen absorber that makes aluminum hydroxide iron oxide rust and hydrogen. The wise dry oxygen absorbers are similar except they have calcium chloride to start the reaction by absorbing water and less chemicals per packet.

Brown rice long term with O2 absorbers?
@TheProvidentPrepper6 ай бұрын
Yes. Not 30 year long time but 5-10 year long term if kept cool. The oxygen absorbers slow down the rancidity process. Moisture content is around 11.5 percent fdc.nal.usda.gov/fdc-app.html#/food-details/2512380/nutrients which is not ideal for long term storage but is in an acceptable range.
