This week was insane with all the rain in Kyushu. But I didn't want to miss an update and did a very (for me) unusual video. As I just received a bunch of old and moldy kimono, I wanted to share with you how to deal with mold and smelly kimono.
I found this video very senseless, but I hope you can learn something. In the end I will announce who won the lottery for my little give-away for 500 subscribers.
Next week I will be back with a new tutorial!
Thanks for watching!

Great advice about the black mold! All of my kimonos are second hand and it's pretty unlikely for me to get any new because I don't live in Japan. So good to know about that. 😊

Try to air them once a half year when you don't wear them too often, to avoid black mold and other stains. I'll also do another kimono care video this month, hopefully you'll find more good tips and tricks!

I have just received kimonos which were in storage of my mother and grandmother 😅 and needing this exact advice. Thank you for your video, and I wonder if you have any thoughts for those in the US, as we don’t have cleaners that generally work to clean kimonos…I hope you do a follow up with how to inspect closely and the result of the black mold cleaning. 🙏🏼 I would like to know what cleaning soaps you use with the silks etc at home as well 🤞🏼🤞🏼

I was taught by that kimonos need to be air dried only but I couldn’t take that as my only answer… I don’t know where you are in the US but there are some Japanese dry cleaners who will clean kimono and obi (there was one in LA, not sure about now; I have one in SF. We also have a company that comes from Kyoto twice a year for cleaning and sales but this is mostly on the West coast). I’m always warned about certain textures/dyes of the fabric being compromised but to be honest, I can’t handle the mold smell so I’ve been opting for dry cleaning…

It's interesting to know how to care of thing which just came but are a little damaged. What have we to do when we have yellowish part in the interior of the kimono ?
@BillyMatsunaga
@BillyMatsunaga 5 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I'm pretty sure you mean the lining that has turned yellow. The lining is usually replaceable and that's what you should do, when it it too bad. If not: you won't see it anyway, so go on and wear the kimono! :)

I have a black hakata obi that I was told has mold when i purchased it. Since it is black it is very hard to tell. I am going to try to sun method. We have central air so the AC is always on which I'm hoping has limited the spread to other pieces in my collection. I'm going to store in plastic bag from now on. I got this obi so i could try the turtle musubi ^.^ thanks for video :D

As far as I learned it only formal kimono would be ok. But you don’t have to care too much about it 😉

I have a straight pink Nagoya obi (no designs or anything)that is beginning to get bright Grinch green specks of mold, and the advice i was given on another platform was just to wash it. Though everything I read said silk crepe should not be just washed, it will ruin it. So I am not sure about what todo. I can't afford to send it to a legit kimono cleaning service in Japan & since I am in the pacific northwest of America I don't know if any dry cleaners near me can fix it either. Does anyone have any advice? is spot cleaning okay? what would I use for silk crepe? can you just wash silk obi? how should I wash it? I am so confused and any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

What do you think the brown stains on the furisode might be? I've got a vintage kimono with similar stains on it and I'm trying to figure out if I can patch them or if I need to rip out the lining and just use the silk for other projects. (basically whether the stains are unsanitary or might spread)

For yukatas, I think you can wash, dry, and iron at home as most are cotton. I’m still trying to figure out how to clean obi… I just like to wash my clothes in general so it’s nice we can machine wash yukata!

Haha!
