Thank you for making this video! I really appreciate how clearly you demonstrated that the 'kimono sleeve' is created with a straight line, which was confusing to me when others used a shoulder angle. However, I did notice that you included slits under the armpits. If I'm not mistaken, isn't this detail more commonly found in women's kimono? Are there other key differences between men's and women's kimono? Additionally, does this same pattern work for making a men's haori as well? Vielen Dank 🙏

You make it look very easy and you simplified it very well. Thank you. I was so stressed about wearing an obi all by myself whenever I had a tea lesson. 😢 Now I can wear my kimono and go to tea lesson without any stress 😂

So I have a question that I know most likely will never be answered but is there a hole in the collar? Because I swear I’ve seen collars with a hole in the space between the bigger piece and the smaller piece… especially because there are collar stiffeners so where would they go?

my idea of what geisha is many would consider to be out of reach --- something like the versace and prada of japan--- you can't find it anywhere online. i have to make it up myself

I agree, it's unfortunate that men's kimono are much more boring than women's kimono. I mean, just have a look at 14:10, that's the equivalent of Western morning dress. That said, you don't have to be that boring and there's enough colors/patterns around to make the ensemble more interesting.

Io purtroppo ho un'imbottitura naturale sul petto 😢 ...e vorrei non averla, perché anche se imbottisco il punto vita sotto l'obi, risulto sempre un strano fisico a clessidra, ma ciccione 😔 brutto da vedere

For someone who has been interested in all things Japanese for 25-30 years, somehow I've missed the kimono... So with that said, I don't know a lot, and if what I'm about to say is common knowledge, I apologize... You answered my first thought, what about wool kimonos, so I'm skipping that, but what about knitted garments, are those a thing? Since I live in northern Sweden, winters get really cold, and I live in knitted wool garments! As for the under layers, I was thinking that quilted underskirts would be a great thing to keep warm! Also, for a modern touch - there are fleece lined tights and leggings, I figure they would work great underneath it all! A quilted wool kimono on top of it all, does that exist? I actually can imagine making something like that for my own wardrobe! ^_^ Now I'm having a look at the rest of your videos, I just found you, and I already like you! ^_^

I really appreciate the nuanced and varied perspectives presented here. I don't know much of anything about kimono, I just found this chanel while searching for content about European traditional dressing styles. I'm really enjoying learning about it! The way we dress across the world is fascinating, and the issue of respect and context is so important.

Una cosa che non ho mai capito é.. cosa indossano a volte i bambini che vedo in foto, una specie di grembiule o giacca sopra il kimono... non so come si chiama e se la possono usare anche gli adulti 😥

Next is a obimakura! I'm super excited and very thankful for your channel. I love to sew and I'm glad i can use these skills on a hobby ❤❤❤

Hi Billy Matsunaga, you have an implacable taste and in every video I've watched the color/pattern combinations that you create are such an inspiration!!! However, I'm desperate for an advise FROM ANY OF YOU LOVELY PEOPLE - I both few kimono's and they smell soooo bad. I thought a simple dry cleaning would do the trick but it didn't. I even risked washing one of them in the washing machine as a last measure but now the whole house smells like... glue?! not really sure...!! So, yes, if you could be so kindly and provide some advise I would be forever grateful!!
@yrofthegoose24 күн бұрын
The smell is most likely naphthalene (stuff in moth balls). Moth balls were ubiquitous in Japanese houses. It can be difficult to get the smell out from vintage kimono. Try gentle wash in cold water with vinegar. Woolite gentle detergent is also good for washing kimono in general. I have several items that smell strongly of "moth balls" and multiple gentle rinses in cold water got it out eventually. Good luck.

I want to ask a related question, and hope no one minds! I am half Japanese and half German, and at 174cm, quite tall. I have always loved kitsune, and learned the basics from my Japanese aunt, who also kindly made several kimono for me that actually fit me❤ ( that was in the 90s, now it is much easier to get longer ones). However, I have an issue with obi. I have several beautiful vintage fukuro obi that I love, inherited from my grandmother. But because I am not only tall but have a long body and broad shoulders, my obi always looks a bit sad and small and lost.. My aunt always said there's nothing to be done except to let the obiage stick out a bit more than usual, but that looks odd because I am also slim and flatchested.... I have experimented with folding my obi not quite in half and using extra padding to make it wider but that does not work with obi patterned with patterns specifically for front and back of otaiko. I might have to live with it, but I thought maybe the brilliant Billy Matsunaga or someone else here might have a novel suggestion or trick? Only recently discovered this channel and enjoy it so much!!!❤

Found a proper geta &zori cost me a headache or two. I found a nice geta in a second hand store in my city and restored them twice! But zori is almost imposible to found in 25cm. With 24 or 24,5 I had problems for daily wear. I khow that zori needs to be smaler than your foot, but IT´s too painful for me. A friend of me traveled to Kyoto last yeard a bougth a geta for me, but sadly was a tourist ones, with heel and not in my size!. Pleaseeee found a website with nice zori in english♥ Thank you♥

Hi Billy, wanted to ask you if you know of any upcycled kimono shops in Japan or outside Japan? (shops that use kimono fabric to make modern and wearable skirt or dresses...) I found this amazing modern kimono skirt in Chicago Kyoto in July during my trip, but didn't have time to do more shopping. Would love to hear from you 🤗🙏

Ive had so many questions about this kind of stuff - im european and i have no relations in eastern asia. But i am very interested in many different east asian traditions, including clothing. But i was never sure if it would be okay for me to wear these, naturally doing so properly and not as some costume. But seeing the way you do it, makes me feel encouraged

I believe it's okay to wear a kimono for Halloween as long as it's done with respect and an appreciation for the art and culture behind it. I wore a light pink silk kimono, paired with a beautifully arranged obi and accessories, and received so many kind compliments. My friends and I were all captivated by the elegance and artistic beauty of the kimono, making it a delightful part of our Halloween celebration. I love sharing this beautiful aspect of culture with others in a respectful way.
