What to Do With Thrifted or Vintage Apparel That Smells Like Fabric Softener or Dryer Sheets

Today as I am out shopping at estate sales, I thought of a few quick tips about removing smells from dryer sheets or fabric softener from your vintage or thrifted clothes. Plus I also wanted to share with you what they do to apparel that comes into thrift shops with stains and why you want to clean up your apparel before you donate.

I put 1/2 cup ammonia in my washing machine. I have had to wash some items 8 times with soap flakes and safe bleach and ammonia to try and get the smell out. So frustrating!

I'd rather have vintage items smell like fabric softener than like that "old, used clothes" smell. I don't know what that is---a combination of old perspiration, body oils, and staleness from being boxed or bagged for too long? Often thrift stores have that smell as soon as you enter the door. Yuck!
