Just watched your video showcasing some of the poster presentations at @geosociety. WOW! They all got me thinking and excited to see people tackling all sorts of important issues and creative ways. Bravo to the presenters.

I've been to a few Earth science/physical geography conferences, the largest being the International Union for Quaternary Research (INQUA) in Dublin. There's always so much stuff going on. However, I am always very self-conscious because I look at all the beautifully designed posters and I always feel like mine never looks as good - but I try to tell myself that the content is more important (???😬)! A plus for me was that I managed to secure a part time lecturing position through someone I met at the conference. It is a perfect setting to make new connections and even to pave the way for research collaboration. All the best and thanks for your videos (I do apologise for the length of this comment)!!

This showcase is so necessary to inspire undergrads and give them confidence to join GSA. Imposter syndrome is a big deal to kids just exploring earth sciences as undergrads and everything you content creators do to welcome them is good!

Howdy Rachel, thanks for a short view of your conference, attending them was always fun. The ones I participated in were fossil fuel related: AAPG & SEG. I did get an opportunity to present a poster session once, but only one person showed up. It was on September 1, 2001 in the morning. Found out most all people were glued to news on tv. Most of my other presentations were for small confidential audiences. It’s always great fun meeting past acquaintances, especially those from other countries. You mentioned the darkness of your videos, I suppose extinction event might be dark, but it’s also an opportunity for the radiation of new species. Wait …, that’s not what you meant. Good video, thanks.

I'm retired, but when I used to go to conferences it was a bit different. Everyone was so ultra-specialized, that you found a few people who had roughly the same interests while the others might as well have been speaking a foreign language.

I agree with the whole posters >> presentations because of the interactions even though in many academic circles they're considered the lower "level" or whatever. The only downside is that it can be exhausting to present and sort of give the same explanation dozens of times to different people. And I love it when they bring props! PS: 12:17 What a weird world we live in where that is a meaningful distinction now!! :D

Hi, just heard your interview on the PLANETGEO podcast - I'm definitely a non-traditional student, studying geology close to your neck of the woods at SFASU. I 'retired' as a pharmacist about a year an half ago - thought you might like to know that you have another follower and that I too need the structure of deadlines! I've been interested in geology since I was a kid and thought I knew a thing or two but now that I'm in school, I've found out that I didn't know as much as I thought I did....but I'm fine with that - looking forward to learning so much more....wish more people thought geology was as cool as I do. Not to get too philosophical about it but everything we are and everything we do is intimately connected to Earth!

I’m not an educator but I work with educators maintaining our outdoor school facility at Mt St Helens. We are wanting to expand, as well as always looking for new educators. This would be an amazing resource for networking as well as training. While a lot of our education programs are focused on school aged children, we also run events for adults. Either way, this event looks fun!

I just admitted in ug geology..... I faced some problem in optical mineralogy..... Give me some solution..
@GEOGIRL3 ай бұрын
Well there is really no secret solution that will make all your mineralogy problems go away, but you can certainly check out my videos on the topic which may help, and I absolutely recommend you talk to your professor or TA to see if they can help you catch up one on one if you are not understanding the material. As a professor now, I can tell you I never have students come to my office hours, but if you do not tell me that you are falling behind or having trouble, I will not know and I won't be able to help, so go talk to your prof, I am sure they will want to help you learn the material :)
@pierreproudhon90083 ай бұрын
From my experience, you need to beg the TA to help you with labs, I begged mine and they specifically carved out time for me and a few other classmates to go to their office and make up the labs. Either the professor or the TA. One of them will come in clutch. It's basically what Rachel said there, but in a more crass way...
@GEOGIRL3 ай бұрын
I am so sorry I didn't mean to come off crass by any means! I just want to get across that we, professors, would absolutely love to help you if we can, so don't be worried or nervous to come see us (meaning your prof). I always try and make myself as available to my students as I can, but I still see there is often hesitation by students because I guess it seems intimidating to go to a professor, but I want you to know that we want to help :) That's what we are here for!
@pierreproudhon90083 ай бұрын
@@GEOGIRL Oh my bad! I meant to say that what I was relaying was basically what you said but worded crassly, as in "beg" and "come in clutch", and all that. It is absolutely not an indictment on you, I can totally get behind every word you said there, and it matches my experience with geo professors pretty well. Sorry for the misleading phrasing!
