Dodger Dog not a coach at all, but I’m a high school player myself and we have pitching machine at our tryouts....they suck and are hard to time, my advice is to find a machine that you can practice off of and get some experience. At actual tryouts, depending on the order. Really time up the machine on the side and learn from other hitters. If you see the first 5 hitters are all under the ball consistently then most likely it’s not their skill but the difficulty of hitting of the machine. So adjust yourself accordingly in the moments. And if your first round or two isn’t good then don’t be afraid to choke up and cut down on the swing until you get in the ball.

If your going to zip the ball tell the guy your playing catch with that your going to do that is my tip. Unless you are looking to fight the guy your playing catch with. Not saying anything and firing the ball over is kind of like telling a guy you just want to spar and then immediately throwing punches as hard as you can. It’s no longer friendly after that.

In my tryouts we do a 100 yard dash 8 times then we throw the ball around then we do it again 5 times with a partner then we do infield and outfield work then run it again then 150 yard bear crawls

trust me when i say this,try out for the one you feel most comfortable in, not the one that suites the team but the one that suites u. i tried out for SS and i still made the team (they had multiple middle infielder. dont ever play a position just cuz the team needs you there. this all is important if you are a bit older like 14+.
