Here's a walk-around of a used shipping container and an overview of what to look for when purchasing one. This video is being provided to you to give you an example of what a wind and water tight container should / should not look like.

I have 2 brand new shipping containers in good condition. I want to have a model train layout in one of them. I hope to insulate them specially for winter it gets cold here in Christchurch, New Zealand. I hope to get power installed in one of them. Is it ok to leave a heater on in them when I’m not there or is? The type of heater I’m thinking is a 5 Finn oil column heater on a low heat setting, it has a thermostat and timer. At the moment both containers are on concrete blocks. I tried to see if I could buy some railway sleepers from Kiwirail because they have been busy replacing the wooden sleepers with concrete sleepers on all the lines round Christchurch but wasn’t able to. Eventually, when I buy my own house I want to lay some concrete with enough room for both of them.

Quick question: If you're putting one of these on railroad ties, do the ties need to be at the very front and back of the container or can they cantilever where they would sit a couple feet in from the front and back? Thanks!

Preferably at the front and back so the container is resting on the corner posts. The weight is designed to rest on the corner posts.

To attempt to make opening and closing of the door latches easier / smoother, any idea how to fix a door that isn’t quite square? Cheers.

Easiest thing I've been able to do for that issue is to grind down the latches. You can also cut off one of the locking bars at the top and bottom so there is only 1 locking handle bar per door that's functional.

Beware of Container One ! The sold me a crappy container that had sidewalls that were puffed out 6 inches. They told me this was not a structural issue.

I'm sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with them. Glad we don't work that way. We inspect all the containers before picking them up from the port, and we have a yard so people can come look at them in person before purchasing as long as they are in stock.

Yes I sell nationwide but delivery is only in a couple locations. Most locations are self pick up or you have to find your own delivery guy.

@@TysonCapel23 I got them to replace it free of charge because it was bad enough lol. Funny thing is the replacement even had a couple leaks but was good enough I said screw it and fixed them. Now I have it insulated with aluminum siding, roof, and full solar system.

It totally depends on where you're located. If you're close to a coastal area, it will probably be around $1900-$2300 for a used 20' and $2700-$3200 for a 40' HC, and that price includes delivery and taxes. Unfortunately inflation has made everything go up in price.

This particular container in the video was actually in pretty good condition. Why would you not want one they make excellent storage. A few dents and dings don't hurt anything. If people are really that picky they can buy a new one trip container at nearly double the price. You can also repaint it quite easily for less than $200.

If you're referring to maneuvering the handles to open and close the door the the best Way I have found to make it simpler is to grind down the latching mechanism the latching mechanism attached to the container iitself.

Another thing you can do is remove one set of handles on each door. They now make what is called an easy open door container which only has 1 handle instead of 2.
