So, would you recommend trying something new on race day? You didn't cover that in the video.

Meanwhile, 1 year later.,.. Good advice as usual from both of you. My routine; well, before Covid19 anyway. Race day: Up and out of house ASAP - no coffee...no breakfast...no thinking... no doubts. Google directions studied and downloaded Arrive ridiculously early knowing where to park and when Costa....or Starbucks in an emergency (!) ... opens. I'm not yet thinking about the run. I've already looked at course profile 1000 times since booking race 6 months previously. Americano, glass of water and sticky bun for breakfast. People watch and browse internet. Let the coffee and water perform their magic.....use coffee shop facilities (sic)! Leave coffee shop. Think about run - choose from 1 of the many plans for the race I have considered. Try and look as though I know what I'm doing. Vaguely warm up Start line....Garmin ready? Run!!!!

Fabulous video as always. The one piece of advice I have heard hundreds of times is the "nothing new on race day". That is such excellent advice. I have tried different food and gels during my runs and thank goodness I heeded the advice because it would have ruined my races had I done it on that day. Rock on ladies and gents.

Thanks Joe! Yes, however tempting it is, new gels on race day is a recipe for disaster.

Great video guys. Got my second ever HM tomorrow and I totally sucked at my first. I started in my 10k pace and I crashed after 7 km. I have learned my lesson!

You guys!!! This mantra!!! It was sooooo helpful. I kept it in the back of my mind, and it kept me from making bad decisions at every turn. I PB'd at half-marathon at 1:33:35 and owe so much to you--not just this video, of course, but all the rest as well.

I'm 40 years old preparing for my first 5K. It's only a virtual race but still excited. I haven't ran long distance since High School all those decades ago. Wish me luck!

Always great videos although, after running a very good marathon in a new shoe out of the box ( brand and style ) last spring, I might not fully agree with the nothing new mantra :) Still valuable advice that should generally be followed ( I did have the benefit of being advised on the shoe and assessed by a very good team of running experts for several hours before they let me walk out of the store ). One point worth a mention is that it can be equally bad to run a long distance event on old shoes - particularly if the cushioning/support is going. Good practice to start working in a new pair some time before and mixing them up a bit on training runs. It would be a shame to do several hundred miles of training only to find the cushioning/support starts to fade during the main event. Wishing everyone all the best in the busy spring fest ahead.

Nice work Kevan. Everyone's different. Brave to try running a whole marathon in a box fresh trainer

Wow I think I have made all those mistakes, except missing bag drop, I wish I had not tried new things in race day as it destroyed my last marathon, however I am back stronger than last time & there will be nothing new in race day 😉

I committed the cardinal sin at VLM on Sunday by wearing brand new, out of the box trainers. My old trainers had done a ridiculous amount of miles so I weighed up the pros & cons and just chanced it. Don't try this at home, kids.

The Running Channel I have blisters on the soles of my feet and could really feel it throughout. I know it could’ve been worse. On the plus side, I got a 1 min, 20 second PB and finished in 03:03:10.

Everytime I used the toilet Tupperware I've always smelled and seen an absolute massive creamy curry. I always complain about cold but I get used to it and yes I have to smile naturally because nothing's new on race day.
