Having surgery is stressful and anxiety producing. Education has been shown to lower those stress levels.
Here I go through the step by step day of surgery from home to the pre-operative holding area to the operating room, the PACU (post-anesthesia care unit) to the floor and home.
While this is specific for what my patients go through at the hospital I work at, most patients will go through something very similar where ever you may be.

Thank you for all of your videos! My surgery is in 4 days. I feel quite prepared and your videos are a main reason. I’m probably heading home the same day from hospital as that’s the typical process here. I have a lot of equipment: ice machine, leg wedges, walkers/one with a tray! Toilet lift assistant, a Benji-approved friend who will take my dog for the first couple days. And a spin bike for whenever that can be managed. I’m going to expect lots of swelling, and a fair amount of pain. Because I’ve been doing some pre-op flexion, trying 😢to bend my knee back, I’m happy to think that once the surgery is complete those painful knee bend stretches after surgery will be vital to my ongoing success with my new knee and will eventually not hurt! 😂 anyway, thank you much!! I’ll stay posted.

I have to admit that your timing of this video could not have been any better. Maybe one day earlier would have helped my sleep last night. But I am so very grateful that you did this video today and I got to see it. I have watched almost all of your other videos. I am in Ohio so you will not be doing my total knee replacement surgery tomorrow, the day after you posted this video. It is being done as outpatient at a local small hospital. I did purchase your book, "The Knee Book" and have enjoyed reading part of it so far. I plan to get the rest of it read after my surgery tomorrow since my surgery is going to limit many of the jobs that I have been doing to get ready for surgery. Thanks again for this video and all the others. Please keep up the good work it is greatly appreciated. Many Thanks, Steve

As explained below my knee surgery was a week ago yesterday. My local hospital where I had TKR always sends home an automatic ice machine. I elevated my leg lots and used the ice machine lots. I thought the ice machine would be a big help for me as it is usually with most other patients. I was still having lots of pain yesterday and been using oxycodone every 4 hours pretty much since the surgery. The ace wrap came off yesterday and my PT person thought it was pretty much normal. I did not think I was progressing as much as I should have been. When all else fails "read the directions". That is what I had my wife do for the ice machine. It specifically said not to use the ice machine with Raynaud's Syndrome. I have had this Syndrome for quite a few years. We called my surgeon, and he did not see a problem with continued use. A few days after my surgery i started getting both index fingers being cold and white. I was even wearing gloves to bed to help keep the fingers warm along with using those hand warmer things. We thought that my Raynaud"s was due to the fact I cannot take fish oil due to being on 325 mg twice a day as a blood thinner. With the wrap off, I could see just how swollen my knee was. That was where I had been using the ice pack almost all the time. Last night my wife and I decided to try putting the ice machine back into the box and not to use it to see how it goes. I have been able to control the pain with oxycodone and I seem to be improving. For me, it seems to be a better path. I am writing this to you to see if you know of or have any experience with ice machines and TKR. I had back surgery on lower back maybe 6 years ago and used ice then. It was limited to 20 minutes of ice packs every 2 hours. From what I know now maybe ice was not a good choice back then for me. Most info about TKR say ice, elevate, and exercise to control the pain. I have not seen any warnings for people like me. What are your thoughts about all of this? Thanks, Steve

Christine Headley Phoenix You didn't mention anything about Spinal Anesthesia, which is becoming more prevalent and is safer than General Anesthesia (GA). Would appreciate this subject being addressed. I am going to have TKA/TKR ASAP and think this is a reasonable subject. Thanks in advance
