I'm so glad I found your videos! I haven't owned a horse since I was 7 and my family sold our ranch ( I'm 32 now🤣) and never owned a mini. But my husband and kids and I recently moved back out to the country and are wanting a miniature horse so I am trying to soak up all the information I can before I buy one. So thank you!

My 2 miniatures are mostly in a dry lot. Occasionally (twice a week) I will put them in a grass lot. But I feel like that isn’t enough. They get two flakes each day and they waste most of it. I still feel like they could use some extra fat for the winter time for sure! the previous owners said not to give them grain because they’ve only ever had grass and hay. I didn’t know wether or not to listen to that because I feel like they need some more nutrients. So I thought I’d ask you for advice.

Hello, I own three minis myself, and when they are out during the day they are in grass pasture and usually for the summer I give them one flake. Then in the winter because they are in earlier during this time I will give them two, but go back down to one if there’s wastage. When they went down in weight last year I would give them a little bit of beet pulp plain flakes twice a day and that helped. Though you could talk to a horse trainer or your vet and they might be able to help as well. If you have more question and would like some help you are more than welcome to e-mail me at melanieanderson@live.ca

The field that I have is very big and filled with grass. so would it work if you used a fence,like the one in the background to make a smaller section for the mini? By the way I subscribed!

hey! not sure if this is gonna get an answer or not. i’m picking up a registered amhr mare, possibly in foal, in about a week or two. she’s currently on partial turnout and a triple crown growth feed. my big horses are on full turnout 24/7 and are on a textured feed, which i believe is considered the same as a sweet feed. however, the place i’ll be keeping the mini will have little to no grass, but I’ll be supplementing with hay. would it be safe to switch the mini over to the feed i have my other mares on, the textured, and will there be any issues with switching her from partial turnout to turnout on a sort of dry lot? the textured feed i have my large mares on is something i’d consider a bit less ‘sweet’, or it at least has a lower sugar content visually. i wasn’t aware of the complications with textured feed, since my low-performance mares seem to do alright on it, although our appaloosa could stand to lose some weight, which we’ll be working on this coming fall. any advice from anyone?

Great video! I was wondering, if he had a mate, would that keep him more busy in the pasture, running, playing etc, and not just eating?

Jan Coldwater I don't know, he loves to eat! Haha! I think training and purposefully exercising him on my part work better then leaving it up to him.

I have heard about some owners turning their mini in dry lot paddocks only. They don’t turn out their minis on grass, because they find the grazing to easily cause weight gain. Do they need to graze on grass?

My vet says no sweet feed, no grass, no treats. Just coastal hay and some alfalfa, and Triple Crown Balancer vitamin and mineral supplement.

Hey ! I’m thinking of getting a mini! How much approximately does Scotty cost every year/month? Also I’ve been learning horsemanship with some shetlands at my farm I work at for about 2 years, I basically know basic horsemanship so do you think I’m ready?
@immeandering
@immeandering 6 жыл бұрын
equine.kendra :3 Hey! I don't think I could give you an accurate idea of price because it varies a ton depending on where you live and other factors like if you keep your horse at home or board. As for if you're ready, I think miniatures are a great way to get started in horse ownership. As long as you make a strong effort to learn and give your mini the best care I think you can take care if a mini. Best of luck to you!

TheHorseNextDoor okay thanks for responding so fast! Me and my family are planning to get a hobby farm so we can have horses! I was planning to get a mini to practice horsemanship and agility with! And as I have anxiety it’s very relaxing to groom them and... weirdly also poo picking 😂 anyways I want to get a mini as a “first horse” and them once I get more confidence then maybe get a horse that I could ride :) also do you have an Instagram?

It's actually way better if you have two so tge other one dosnt get lonely, although have a mini is just like a horse by that I mean work why's it's a full time job cleaning and feeding but if you love them and take good care and are aware of all the expenses its well worth it!

Do you need hay along with the Purina feed?sorry new to all of this
@immeandering
@immeandering Жыл бұрын
Yes, so the main portion of any horses diet should be hay or grass. And then supplemented with a complete grain to fill any gaps on nutrition or vitamins that the hay may not provide.

In your opinion would you feed beet pulp to a miniature horse if he was a hard keeper?
@MelanieTheEquestrian
@MelanieTheEquestrian 4 жыл бұрын
In my own opinion you could feed them beet pulp flakes plain without the molasses. That’s what I did for my horses in the winter of 2018, when I was having a little trouble keeping the weight on with a little bit of simplicity grain.

I have never understood how a horse's (or pony's) natural diet could damage them o.O we feed our mini all summer long on just grass. Never any pellets or grain unless its to bribe him and even then it's a handfull. Never had any issues with feet or weight. Now we just acquired a rescue pony mare who is underweight. She was drylotted with bigger horses and just a bale. Didnt do her any good. Unfortunately its winter so we dont have grass at the moment so we are supplementing... which is why I'm here.

Grass full of sugar causes laminitis and minis are more prone to it. I give mine a vit/min supplement in some plain chaff as well, as the grass doesn’t necessarily give them all they need to stay fully healthy (hooves etc). Horses in the wild walk around non stop and have more of a range of forage to eat. Big difference to domesticated horses 😊!
