I've had my mini for 15 years, he's been paddocked with big horses , cows, and a goat, he's a persistent little boy and the other animals eventually just give into his charm and become friends. He's also very smart and easily trainable. I just love him to bits.

I do know plenty of people that have their mini's with their full sized horses, my aunt has like 4 minis and 4 full sized horses all together, and a rescue is like 6 full sized horses and a mini mare. They are good with them, even though mini's are small they are smart and know how to out weight their size. Anyways, the bigger horses were gentle to petite and she just tagged along. I have seen mini's with regular horses almost everywhere.

I had done ten years of horse training before pursuing a medical career. I have to say you did an awesome job on this video. It was very informative and easy to follow. I am thinking of getting a miniature horse as a therapy animal to take in to places for support in patients recovery. But I was just impressed on the confidence and delivery you presented in the video. Keep up the work young lady.

Thanks for sharing such fun information and I hope that other miniature horse owners can benefit from it! The only trouble I have with my miniature horse service animal sometimes is that I have to remind her to mind her manners when we're going out into stores. Some mornings she's so excited and wants to run around and kick up her heels especially on mornings we haven't been able to exercise before going out. By the way, Scotty looks like an awesome little fella!

As a farrier, I'm not sure what you mean about "having it under control"? I've seen horses that founder every year and eventually they don't bounce back. It's kind of like giving a diabetic sugar. It's a very painful condition and no horse should have to go through that.

Great information! My neighbors have a pony I don’t know the breed of him and I don’t know his name either so I call him socks because he has socks on all his feet. His owners leave I’m in a small pen all day and I don’t think they feed him hay or anything he just eats the weeds in his pen ( they give him water though) so I’ve been visiting socks every day when ever he sees me he Winnie’s at me and runs to me and I sit there with him or maybe half and hour and feed him so grass from my lawn because I don’t want him just eating weeds and sometimes I’ll make these homemade sugar cubes because he loves them so much and then I would pet him and tell him he’s a good boy and then I go back inside and go see him again the next day. I would love it if I ever owned him. And today when I went out to see him it was so hot outside and I could see him sweating too I feel bad because he doesn’t have a shelter either. His owners don’t mind me visiting him either. I stay on my side of the fence and I pet him and talk to him. Anyways your video was very helpful!!! I will watch more too!
@keetrandling4530
@keetrandling4530 4 жыл бұрын
Darlin' sugar cubes aren't heathy for him. If you want to feed him, well, first I'd have a conversation with his owner, gently asking about his care, so you find out his routine (maybe he gets fed early morn & late night, and you just haven't seen it happen?) Then, if it's OK, I'd bring him a flake (piece of a bale) of hay, instead of grass & sugar.

Quick question! Well 2 lol I’m thinking of getting a mini and some Pygmy goats next spring/summer. The first question is could the goats and mini go together? I’ve been told yes and no but people. Second question do you need a dry lot? A friend of mine has mini she said in that I could either get a feed bag and put it on him so he can’t eat and then take it off for certain time or that I could have him outside for like 10-12 hours and then put him in the stall for the rest of the night... thanks!

Question. We rescued 2 rather old mini's that lived outside their entire life (until we got them). We built them their own shelter and they could be baited in but would still sleep outside. Sadly, they have passed but we are looking at 2 young mini's and I want to ensure that my shelter isn't the reason the other 2 wouldn't stay in it. Other than being a smaller shelter, is their something I need to make sure I have, or need to change? I live in the central mid west so it can get cold. The current shelter was cow panels and tarp with straw bales for insulation. I'm currently building an 8'x7' shed that will likely become the new shelter.
@immeandering
@immeandering 5 жыл бұрын
I had one horse who loved my run in shelter and would always hide there when it rained and such, but pretty much all of my other horses have really just not cared for it. I think its kinda like that old saying "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink". But I would say that you should make sure they're not afraid of the tarp, as some minis are. And then I would just feed them every day in the shelter (that's what I do with mine). Otherwise, I would recommend you get them rainproof turnout sheets that you can put on them in cold/wet weather. Then even if they don't go in the shelter they will still have protection from the elements. I got my miniatures turnout from Jeffers Pet!

Well, my best friends mom has a lot of mini horses, they rescued one and they could not handle it, well my friends parents left it to the kids to look after the mini's, but they could not handle one named "Christy" so they gave her to my older sister, by that time I was like five and so so so so short, so my sister trained her and I rode her for the longest time! Now I have gotten a big horse, he was rescued from an auction and was buddy sour, my mini and my horse met for the first time and they where in love, but know that you said that I shouldn't really keep them together, I don't think I could seperate them with out one having an anxiety attack, so I have kept them together and they are both laid back and relaxed, I mean they are both a little older.

Pi have 7 minis I’ve raised them all mine get one half cup of feed twice a day and the bag last my 7 for about two weeks. At 20.00 a bag I use Purina Omaline 100. Hay is a flak for 2 of them. No additives no extra vitamins or any thing like that and my vet says they are extremely well taken care of. One tube of wormer does them all. So you can feed 7 miniature for the cost of one full size horse Of which I also have 3

1:54 "Dogs and horses are two entirely different animals." BUT THE REAL QUESTION IS . . . What if you treat your dog like a horse? Ever since I was little, I've wanted a horse. So the next best thing, a chocolate lab. My mom yelled at me for riding him (I was little, don't worry XD), so I always used a leash, looped it around so it was like reins, and stood behind him. He also knows all the gaits. XD I want to become a horse stable owner and trainer, so I have to start "training" something like a horse, right?! ;))

I'm genuinely serious... Can dwarf people, or midgets ride mini horses? Like.. Say if the person was 4'2, weighed 90 lbs. Could they get away with riding mini horses?
@wren2888
@wren2888 3 жыл бұрын
As long as they aren't too heavy then yes. You shouldn't weigh over 20% (tack included) your ponies weight if your riding it (its a general rule, some horses and ponies can carry more/less but its good to follow)
@Liz-ww3cm
@Liz-ww3cm 3 жыл бұрын
Well, no. Twenty percent of 200 pounds is 40 pounds. If tack is, what, at least eight or ten? Then the rider could only be 30 to 32 pounds... A 90 pound human, plus 10 pounds of tack (for easy math) would need a 500 pound horse. Wouldn't that be on the larger size for a Shetland pony? Much bigger than a mini, anyway.

Sorry but not putting a mini in with a big horse is rubish. I have my 8-year-old mini shetland in with my 4-year-old 15hh gelding and never had an issue. They are the best of friends and they are inseparable.

@• Mxssy Edits • Except its not. No one's suggesting that someone ride anything that small, although a small child could ride him with no detriment to the pony. But there is no such thing as a miniature pony. Let me put it this way. Your average horse is 15-16hh. Your average small pony is around 10-11hh. A mini is 8.5-9.5hh max, depending on the area they're in. That means there is a 5.5-7.5h difference between the average horse and a mini, but only a 0.5-2.5h between the average small pony and a mini. That means a mini is almost half the size of a horse, but only 2-10" or 6-25.5cm smaller than a small pony. In fact some Shetland pony's are small enough to qualify as mini's. Ponies are determined by their phenotype, though it must be said that there are some breeds that are called 'horse' but are in fact ponies and vice versa. A pony has proportionally short legs, a short thick neck, a short head and a wide barrel chest. A horse is more refined and elegant in dvery aspect. Even the heavy draughts have a distinctly different look to the trained eye. The whole point of a miniature horse is to be a very small copy of a *horse,* so a mini *must* therefore, have a horses phenotype or it completely defeats the purpose of a miniature horse. This particular pony may be a little long in the leg and a little fine in the neck, but ultimately its appearence reads as 'pony', therefore it is a pony, not a true mini. Basically, any pony small enough to qualify as a mini is just a very small pony. For a mini to truly be a mini, it must have the phenotype of a horse, whether that horse be a riding horse or a draught horse.
