The best advice I could offer you is to first try and work at a salon in the USA or UK prior to opening your own salon. You could rent a station or find a commission opportunity. Or if it's your absolute dream salon, I would even consider trying to assist a stylist. Regardless of which path you choose, you will need a dependable clientele to finance any independent salon endeavors in the future.

@@arquitap This is a great question! I actually have never made a formal contract for an assistant but I am now definitely considering one. I think this is an excellent idea to have all your expectations written out and signed on. I will make a new video on this topic and soon as I make my new assistant contract! Thanks!

@@arquitap Yes! I would for sure have one. I would lay out all the expectation and requirements on your assistant. I would list how many days they would be working and their hourly rate. I would include what you will be providing for them as well. Such as color training, models, hands on training ect. I would also include your write up policy, and include your trial period. I usually do a 30 trial run for any new potential assistant. If after (or even during the trial) i ever feel that they are not a good fit, then I will let them know. Hey! To be honest it really is your preference. I personally do a yearly percentage increase based off of my lease rental increase. Every lease agreement is different, so I would consider your lease terms and increase rates accordingly to maintain your profit margin.

How to figure the cost of each chair some stylus are more busier. Is there a limit to how many clients they could have in the hour?

I would not base the stylist rent off of how busy they are. I would base the rent off of how many DAYS they are using a chair. I wouldn't punish a stylist for being busy, and charge them more. If they are renting, they should be allowed to double book if that is how they run their business behind the chair. I do have a video where I talk about how to price your salon rental chairs based off of your business expenses (let me see if I can find it and tag it below for you). However I would also consider how full your chair are. Are yo9u maxed out, or are you still looking for renters?

Great question! I absolutely believe you should request a written booth rental agreement from your salon owner. Make sure it includes the topics discussed in detail in this video. In order for you to run your business successfully you need to know exactly what the salon expects of you as an individual owner. Transparency between both parties will lead to a more trustworthy and long lasting relationship. If you are hesitant about addressing the subject with the salon owner, reassure them that this document will benefit both parties. It's not intended to be an iron clad legal contract just an agreement to formalize the business relationship. Hope this helps. I'm really glad you enjoyed this video. Sorry I am just now getting back to you on this one! For this type of situation, I have a three strike policy in writing between the stylist and salon. This signed contract outlines the types of actions that will warrant disciplinary action. Including but not limited to tardiness, cleaning duties and late rental policies. If a stylist receives three written notices in a calendar year, their lease agreement is immediately terminated. Hope this helps!

Can you clarify what you mean by rent increase? So if you increase by 5% it would be every year until when ? No end to the increase?

@@jojopumpkinbby Yes! This would be a scheduled rental increase. The salon owner would determine how much and how often based off of their business growth and expenses. I would say a 3-5% is normal. And an every year increase depends on how you want to run your business. I would at lease add a clause that would allow you to make that change in rental rate with an "X" amount of notice. Within my Rental Contract for purchase, I do put an option for an increase that you can edit to fit what would work for your business. I hope this helps! I'll share the link for you!

I agree that everything should be reviewed by a legal professional. You should also weigh the cost of legal council in the event you need to enforce your agreement. I think you would be surprised how many people in the industry are working without a rental or commission agreement in writing!
