What to know about the potential Capital One-Discover merger

A potential merger between Capital One and Discover Financial Services is sparking antitrust concerns. The two firms are the fourth and sixth largest companies issuing credit cards to American consumers. @@loganfignewtonEasy, Capital one Costumer service is not the best. Discover has a well superior costumer service and app. As a consumer I will not be happy having Capital one manage my Discover accounts. At least that’s my experience. As a stock holder it will probably make me money.

​@jpsion Due to stagnant wages and rising inflation life for a lot of people has become unaffordable. Which is why a lot of people in lower income brackets have to resort to credit card debt to cover basic necessities, and while savings are at an all time low credit card debt has skyrocketed. I find it funny that she says it shows the consumer is doing better when it's completely the opposite

Good question. Will Discover use the Mastercard or Visa logo? Or. Will they maintain their identity, separate from the two? I use to have a Discover card. I liked it and regrett not having it now. However. I couldn't use it everywhere like Mastercard or Visa. So the anex could be an advantage

@patrickm6012 why? Think about it. Credit card interest rates needs to cover short term losses on treasury bonds due to the rate of change in the federal funds rate. Thus credit card interest is going to be high. Smaller credit unions may not of had as much exposure and thus can offer better rates. Again I fail to see why this merger is a net negative for consumers.

@@Artdeco407 its market competition for my debt. Since I have reoriented my life to live without debt then a business in the market for my debt has no effect on my life. It's the equivalent of two cigarette companies merging. Since I dont smoke and never will, the supposed reduced market competition has no effect on me.

This merger will make them bigger on the credit side (19%) then Chase (16%). Plus on the banking side that would merge Pluse network which is a merger with Discover of yesteryear.
