I think i have tried almost every drug that was mentioned here for sleep. Im a super insomniac for the last 15 years. Sleep should be a basic function of life just like breathing is we dont think about when to breath in and out and sleep should be the same. Perhaps we can say insomnia is caused by brain damage?

I took Ambien after my husband died because I had constant insomnia. It took years to get off it. I don't know how they can say Ambien isn't addictive. When I tried to cut down the dose, I would wake up around 2 AM due to wild, heart-thumping nightmares. Try to get back to sleep after that... My doctor said she wasn't surprised. So this symptom trying to get off of them must be well-known. Wouldn't you call that a negative, additive effect? Big thumbs-down from me where Ambien is concerned.

I could sing a long song about the nights when the wolf is at the door. I've tried trazadone, Ambien (zolpidem), melatonin, hydroxyzine, Benadryl, meditation, tossing and turning, bouts of boozing, and tears, copious tears. That's a song that lasted for years. Nowadays I will still occasionally take a small dose of zolpidem, hydroxyzine, or melatonin, but often now I sleep old school with no pharma assistance. Maybe it's because I have gotten better keeping my daytime life and worries out of my bedtime. (Side note: trazadone messed with my head. Just taking it nightly made me moody and introverted during the day, but YMMV.)

@@Keep-on-ok wow thanks for sharing your EXP, I been on ambien for 15 years doing 50mg per night with some xanax to add but it doenst help to knock me out. My tolerance is way above the roof. That is the problem with pharma drugs.... I have to use booze to knock me out which I do not recommend because its another addiction on top of these pills but insomnia seems to me more like a brain damage issue more than anything because we are all suppose to be able to sleep when we are tired but somehow that got all rewired. Hoping you well and take care. Im starting my journey to get off the booze for sleep and looking for alternative substances even if cost me another addiction as alcohol will devour your liver in the long run if not prevented drinking every-night. Cheers!

@@unixjpn I do drink occasionally but usually my limit is one or two. Alcohol will help you get to sleep but in my case, it causes me to wake up in a couple hours. I like to leave it alone but I do have one on occasion. Good luck on your journey.

Ambien made me feel fine at first..idk why but the generic made me depressed overnight basically..I had to stop it..I started on sonata recently. It's generic don't seem to work like the brand name either. It usually has not worked. Restoril didn't work either. Halcion seemed to work but they changed dosage on it many years ago. From 0.5 to 0.25 is recommended dose. Not sure what I can use. And I can't use melatonin. Any suggestions?

My 'sleep specialist' got confronted by a PHARMACIST (😡) and then refused to prescribe my regular ambien anymore! Wth? This infuriated that the pharmacist would interfere with my medication that I have been using for 15 years. No common sense. I called and let them know this was unacceptable and I would not be supporting that business anymore. Well, that store closed down and so have a bunch of their locations. Pharmacists apparently are short-sighted.
