You're spot on! Typically, a longer lease term will impact the monthly price and/or specials (though this is not an industry standard or requirement, it's up to each individual property's discretion).

Hello, I'm moving to Austin in July with my 7 year old Golden retriever. My workspace is around the Domain. I want to live in a livelier, diverse, dog friendly part of Texas, and would essentially want to cap rent plus utilities at $1500, which parts should I look at?

Hi, @KrupaTejalMarlapudi! Thank you for your patience. As I'm sure you've moved in by now (considering you moved last month), I'll still answer your question below for anyone who sees this later (or if your relocation plans changed)... In most cases, your utilities will be separate from your rent as they run through the City of Austin (versus through your apartment complex). Unfortunately, due to Austin growing at such a rapid pace over the last few years, it may be difficult to find an apartment + utilities under $1,500/mth in one of the fastest growing areas in the city (i.e. Domain). Pricing is based on "supply and demand" and the rates change every single day. There are more properties/units being built (but not at the same speed of the need/demand). However, this price-point may be achievable (in Domain) if you're okay with renting an efficiency and have light usage of your utilities. Other solutions include looking at areas outside of the Domain or within an acceptable drive to/from the Domain.

With the current salary provided, focus on "tax credit / income-based" properties. These are properties that work with the city to provide affordable housing options. There are some "market rate" apartments that offer a few income-based units on-site as well but those are generally taken/occupied most of the time. Also, with income-based properties/units - start looking NOW because they generally have waiting lists if they're full at the moment. In regards to the traffic...if you're moving to Austin-proper (within the Austin city limits), there's not much insight I can offer around the traffic (other than inquire with your employer about working remote some time of the week) ;D. If you apply for a unit, and they require a $250 application fee, if you don't get accepted, do you lose the $250 or they don't charge it?

It depends on the property @fabianasantucci1554. In most cases, you'll lose it (because the fee is to process the application - and whether you were accepted or not, the application was processed to get the result). I would ask the property and confirm with each property before paying and applying.

So if a person has a hard time getting accepted, they try different apartments, they can be out a thousand dollars if looked at 4 places. Unbelievable. Thank you so much for your response.
