I must say that the greatest thing you guys have done for your kids is show them what a genuine, healthy and happy relationship looks like. It is very obvious watch you together that you are still 100% in love. It is refreshing to see that in a society that doesn't value that like we used to.

Sweet love. You two are tops! My hubby and I made 29 Years of marriage in June. I would say mutual respect is huge. We joke with each other but do not belittle. Belittling is extremely destructive. Men need to feel respected and women need to feel adored and protected. IMO, the man was built to carry the mantle financially and the woman was built to nurture. Certainly, I know that men can change a diaper and women can cut the grass. But, problems arise when the pendulum swings too far in regard to gender roles. I workout like a fiend. Yet, I want to be soft and womanly. I want my man to be manly. God made us to compliment each other. Not compete against each other for position.

What a nice way to start my day. It’s so nice to watch people that are happy and seem to love and respect each other. Spreading positive and loving energy! As much as I LOVE your beauty videos (and I DO!), these videos are, to me, so much more valuable. Thank you!

I am watching this video late. :) It is great. Two things I would add: similar family backgrounds because that tells you a lot about overall compatibility and also relates to how well you fit in with the in laws and also similar religious views. Religious differences can be a huge source of conflict after kids arrive. As a divorced person, I can say that physical attraction died when we discovered that we weren't compatible along the four factors that Michael discussed. The biggest issue was hat we had different lifestyles and life goals and also we fought poorly. We just were explosive and he had a tendency to get mean. We had so many resentments and issues between us, I was not interested in my ex as a lover anymore. I do think attraction was high when we met, but if the rest of your relationship isn't healthy, at least for women, the physical attraction goes. Same was true for my friends who are divorced.

I think this video should be a prerequisite for all people to see before getting married! It made me so happy I actually got teary eyed at the end! I hope this helps so many people. I noticed that when you and Michael talk and tell stories--you'll look at each other (not just the camera). My husband and I do that also, it's something I have always loved and another thing we do is touch while we talk--something else I noticed that you two do:). PS I remember when you did that marriage video--wow, time sure flies by!

Thanks for sharing your story. It's clear you guys love each other & that your marital roles work for you, that is great! I wanted to add in another perspective for other (younger) viewers to consider. There are other templates on which to base gender roles. There are many men & women who prefer to interact equally on all fronts in their marriage, not just as a "helpmate" or an intellectual sounding board for the husband's career. My husband & I have been in a loving marriage for 17 years, both have professional careers & believe strongly in true equality on all fronts. We think it's important to emphasize this as we prepare to send our two kids (one daughter, one son) to college in the next few years. Just another perspective for young people to think about as they prepare for their future. Thanks again for sharing what works for you & Michael.

Beth Carlson I agree 100% when it comes to issues of equality & gender roles. Obviously, healthy and successful marriages require good communication, trust, loyalty, & shared values. Also, the importance of sexual attraction can't be overstated! However, a critical element in my 15 yr marriage is genuine respect and equality. My husband and I not only value each other as partners but also as best friends and respect each other as people. We recognize and value that we are a couple & a team, but that we are also individuals who will have differing opinions at times. It is in those difficult moments when it is paramount to treat one another with respect and dignity. It's of critical importantance to not only support the hopes & dreams of the family as a whole, but also the individual aspirations of both partners. Throughout our relationship neither one of our careers has been deemed more important than the other. We have both compromised at times & it has made us both better for it. Going beyond lip service to achieving equality in a marriage can be challenging but is so worth it. We are proud that we are raising our children with these values. Love is clearly a critical element in a relationship but I contend that healthy love is rooted in genuine respect & a belief that your partner is truly your equal not just your companion or helper.

Great job you two! While my youngest son was growing up we would have periodic talks about how to treat a lady. If we were together and observed a positive or negative interaction between a man and a woman on television or maybe we were at the store, we would discuss it. Next week he'll be 25 and I'm very proud how he treats women. I can't help but think those little talks along the way made a contribution. I know you two do the same with your boys, trust me it really makes a difference. xoxo C

It's obvious that you 2 have a tremendous amount of respect for each other. That was an issue in my previous relationship and I am happy to say that it's not an issue in my current one. The lifestyle differences were also an issue in the previous relationship. I was a good bit younger, still enjoyed music festivals, going out, and hanging out with my friends on weekends. He was about 8 years older and wasn't into any of that. It was a problem that lasted too long! I am now much happier with a partner who I consider to have a lifestyle (and other life stuff) parallel to mine bc he is my age and bc of that, I think we relate to each other really well in a myriad of ways.

Wow I wish I had this video before I got married. I wish i did have the conversation with my husband before we got married regarding how we saw married life , kids and lifestyle. I thought I married someone who had was in the same frame of mind when it came to children, lifestyle, common respect and morals, and similar interests. But boy did that change after everything.!!! My husband does 10% parenting, 90% spoiling our daughter, I'm not too thrill about his behavior nowadays, his morals can be iffy, he's disrespectful and rude, doesn't treat me as a equal because I chose to be a stay at home mom, which he resents. He complains all the time about having to work to support us and his family(his parents, yes he doesn't realize my daughter and I is his first priority family). I'm never informed about our finances but only get yelled about how we don't have money all the time. We come from middle-class families but he acts otherwise. You're so lucky and you guys seem like a great couple and a nice family. Good looking too!

I wish I had this advice when I was young. You both are very confident in each other and your boys are successful because of it..My oldest son is engaged and I will refer this video to him and his fiancé...My marriage was successful for 20 years until unexpected illness separated us beyond repair. All is well when "all is well" but a person's integrity is shown during the darkest days.. I tell my kids before you commit to someone..first you go camping together and set up a tent in the dark..go canoeing for 4 hrs ..and pay attention to how the other treats animals...these are activities that bring out the best and worst and can be very telling...just say'n Dar

I so agree with this! I mean SO AGREE!! I have been married to my husband for right at 20 years, been together for 28. I agree on every point mentioned! I hope young adults see this and take note! I would add that you need to be supportive of each other as well (which I know you both are). My husband has had several hobbies (motocross in our younger days, playing guitar/in bands now, as well as his "day time job") but I was always supportive of his hobbies. He was and is with mine as well. I do love that Michael likes you to be outspoken. My husband does too! He might not all the time but overall he does! :-)

Thank you for sharing! I'm 37 years old, never married, no kids...my parents have been married for almost 44years😀. I just haven't found the right guy for me. I do find, that because I work in a male dominated field for both work and volunteer work, it's hard to find a MAN who understands that I love what I do😀. I work for a police department and I volunteer as a firefighter in my small town. He's out there somewhere 😀~Kim CanadaKim1978

Great video. I agree with Michael's 5 major points of consideration but I would have to add a very important "deal breaker". Character is definitely my most important determining factor. Honor, integrity, respect, kindness, thoughtfulness, and sense of humor are the most important considerations for me in any long-term relationship. As we age, we know wrinkles are going to happen at some point, hair might thin or disappear all together, waistlines can expand, gravity will eventually take hold and unexpected health issues can change a myriad of things. However, if your mate's character is something you admire, the physical appearance lessens in importance and they become more and more attractive as time passes and your love and admiration continues to grow.

There's such a nice balance between you. I agree with a these points. As well as current commonalities, I think in the 'getting serious' stage of the relationship, it's important to visualise what life might be like with that person in 10, 20 or 50 years in different situations and decide if you'd still be comfortable. A lot of people put up with things that they know they're not happy with because they think the other person will change eventually and that's leading to failure imo.

+Marnie Goldberg | MsGoldgirl This is VERY true. I would say to never date a fixer upper. Don't date someone that you want to change. And often those very people that you want to change would instead prefer that you change. That is a recipe for long term disaster and marital resentment. P.S. You and Michael have fabulous chemistry! It is very obvious when both of you are on camera.

Such good advice! I wish I had advice like this 11 years ago when I was a dumb 19 yr old, who thought love would change everything and things would work themselves out. It really doesn't, that's what I tell my younger sister now and what I will tell my daughter as well. Great advice! Please keep sharing, and doing these videos with Michael. I love the pearls of wisdom being shared here. It's nice to see videos of substance on youtube, right alongside the fun stuff.

I agree that physical attraction is very important...but I believe that breaks down because of other things like lack of respect, courtesy and animosity that builds up. That destroys any physical attraction. Love and hate are very similar beasts!

I'd like to add onto the parenting thing, that it is equally important to keep your partner informed if one of you has a change of heart on this matter. I too had the kid conversation on the first date with my ex. Eight years later, I asked again, and his answer had changed. I needed to know that, the moment it changed for him. I was patiently waiting for things that were never going to happen. I didn't press the issue for a long time, because I wasn't ready for a family. Even though I wasn't ready, I still would not have stayed in a relationship that wasn't going to have kids.

This video, or list, should be mandatory curriculum at one point in life. Because I've messed up on quite a few 'rules', in particular in the kids department. It took my SO a long time to realize he does want kids, and now it may never happen, due to waiting too long. And I made the error in thinking that if you love each other, you can adjust to have a life where there is no offspring. But it resulted in a slightly depressed, fake happy state of mind on my part.

Excellent film! And I do agree. I would also say that another very important thing is commitment. Not so much to one another as to the relationship itself. Because having all these boxes checked before helps and gets things started, but keeping a relationship is a mutual effort.

A friend and I went to a Kentucky Fried Chicken for lunch. My husband was the guy who fried the chicken. I had no clue who he was, but he sure was cute. When school started I seen him again in the hallway. Our first date was October 25th 1986. We were married April 12, 1991.

Yeah, you better turn the camera off...it looks like that physical attraction thing is kicking in. Honestly, I think you two should write a book, even if it's a online one, "Marriage Musts by Marnie and Michael". Your marriage oozes with good health, and wouldn't it be nice to see more deliberated decisions making before saying "I do", there would be a lot less divorce I think and a lot happier marriages. ~Dawne

That was such an awesome Video, I enjoyed every Minute. I am your Age, similar length in relationship and marriage, one daughter of 7 years.Isn`t it the most important decision in your life, who you spent the rest of you life with, who you become Kids with etc. ? It`s my holy treasure through all rough times and crises in Job or relationship to other People. I am so thankful to have my husband and my Family in General. Thank you, for sharing this with us. Good Top 5 Advice; I agree to 100% Hopefully your Boys watch that one :
