So what are the best laptops for programming in 2020? In this video I'll walk you through my programming laptop buying guide and discuss my recommendations for laptops for programmers. Fortunately programming laptops don't need to have crazy specs and can be quite affordable!

IMO, I think 8GB of RAM should be the minimum and 16GB should be the recommended. I've run into instances where I've encountered out of memory exceptions when I used a machine with 4GB and I wasn't doing anything too crazy. An example if you're running Windows 10: Having Visual Studio, Chrome, and SQL Server Management Studio open. Those apps will definitely give you trouble if you're running on only 4GB of RAM.

Hi, Tim! In my country, I could only find an IdeaPad Flex 5 with Ryzen 5 and 16gb of RAM. I couldn't find a Ryzen 7 matched with 8gb RAM, which would be great for me as I'm on a budget but would like to have a decent processor for a future proofed machine. The one I found with Ryzen 5 is approx. 910 CAD. Do you think it's much better if I keep looking for a similar machine with Ryzen 7 and 8gb RAM?

He is absolutely right about the processor! I tried to lean on a low end dual core all in one but it was painful so I got a used MacBook Pro 2011 13inch i7 16gb ram 1tb ssd and it is AMAZING for the price i paid. I am typing this from it. However, I decided to get into machine learning so I got a desktop with the ryzen 7 2700X and RTX 2060 Super. Great machines.

Thank you for a genuinely helpful and practical advice to all the freshers out there. I just got done with my research on all the Desktop / Laptop machines. Got my sister an i5 10th gen + 512 GB NVMe SSD (Acer Aspire 5). I would personally consider an AMD Ryzen 4th gen plus a dedicated GPU (nothing great just fit in a thin & light). Also one thing I noticed is that there is a huge difference in value being offered to consumers in USA vs other countries. I'm from New Delhi, India. And for the same reason I paid 25% premium compared to US market. That HP ENVY you showed sells for Twice the amount here. Thank you for the vid!

KZbin videos lag while in 1080p 60FPS, approx 1hr of battery life, and obviously, no fancy development work. I'm planning to buy the HP Omen 15 with Rizen 5. I feel like it would be a good balance between price and performance. Plus it has a really good screen and minimalist design for a gaming laptop.

I started to learn to program on a Acer Aspire 3 with a Pentium 4417U. And pretty soon when I needed a good machine I upgraded to an ASUS TUF A15. But, my starting 8 months I used the Acer Aspire 3.

im running linux with a minimal wm on a lenovo t530 with 12gb ram and a 2 core four thread i5 3320m, it cost me 100$ off of ebay plus 36$ for a new battery and i would highly recommend any thinkpad before the tx40 serries.

I'm learning python on my Acer Chromebook 315 using the Linux development environment. I don't really like Windows but have a Predator gaming laptop. I hate Apple products and don't have a bunch of $$$ to put towards getting a new laptop. I've found that for learning and for basic daily use the Chromebook works great. When I got it, it was around $300 from Walmart and that was 2-4 years ago. The Chromebook has surprised me so much I'm thinking about staying with Chromebooks for programming at least until I need to get something better.

Huawei's Matebook D15/D14 are really good models and they're coming with Ryzen 4000, 16gb of RAM and 512 NVMe SSD this month. D15 with Ryzen 4500u is only $665 USD dollars.

I have Lenovo ideapad 320, 3 years old. Specs are - 8 GB RAM, USB type C (3.1) Gen 1, i3 6th Gen, 15.6 inch screen. It had Windows 8.1 installed and had 2TB of space (HDD) but it was very slow to be honest. Now I have installed Ubuntu and because my hard disk crashed I have switched to 240 GB SSD and this thing is a beast now 🔥 It is lightning fast! I highly recommend everyone getting a SSD if he/she can afford.

I would really like to know what OS is better? I mean, what advantages you get by buying a Mac or using Linux, I know it’s up to the person, obviously but I’m curious to know what can you do in each OS

osx only if you need to develop apple app, else dual boot linux/ windows. it's nice to dual boot so you focus in either programming or gaming/ entertainment.

Helpful advice if you're going for Lenovo: (mine is Y5070) - Don't drop them, they are made of paper (learned that the hard way) - If you are gaming on them on Linux seriously consider a way to cool them down because I melted mine playing Skyrim. XD Now I have no GPU but I don't regret anything XD It died playing Skyrim so it died a hero! PS: I have a 10 years old VAIO laptop and the keyboard on that is just amazing. Haven't used a nicer keyboard to this date. Disclaimer: I don't know about the new Lenovos and I'm just sharing my experience. If you are more careful than me they are good value for money though!

There are cheaper laptops with the same or better configuration. If I were you I would go for a system with a ryzen 4000 series cpu, they are much much faster than the i5 9th gen.

-Notepad for code notes 📝. - Atom - Visual Studio (can be overwhelming at first) - Framework for the specific language you prefer to use. Django for python, Spring for Java, Node.js for Javascript, ...etc.

Do you really need to change then? I think that your Macbook Air is quite recent and honestly good enough for coding and other lightweight stuff. You shouldn't get another macbook in that case, and instead get a desktop pc (if space is not an issue) to do the heavy loads. tl;dr macbook air for coding and general work, desktop for everything else

My laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad E585. It has 8GB of RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" display. The only thing is the processor. It's a dual-core AMD Ryzen 3 @ 2.5GHz. It's great for learning Full Stack Web Development.

Don't need strong specs for web development Ram and cpu is more used in app development and game development majorly when finally you build the app or game.
