I watched this video because I’m being considered for a dev position at a local startup and they provide Alienware X17 gaming laptops for all their devs and I thought it was a bit of an odd overkill but I’m not complaining. Was just interested to see what you had to say here and it all makes sense. I like my M1 MBP but I think coding in a Windows machine that costs just as much will be interesting.

This is the first article of its kind I've come across and I find it super interesting. I've been talking about this for a while with my colleagues and I use a gaming laptop over a 'professional' or 'work' laptop for two basic reasons. They're cheaper wth better specs where I need them. For example I use an Asus Tuf 2021 model. It has a great screen, full keyboard with numpad, USB-C with display out for my dock, Ryzen 5900h, 3060 GPU, 1TB HD and excellent battery life. A comparable professional laptop (e.g. an HP Elitebook G8) costs me another 1K with only one advantage, that being chargeable by the USB-C display port. This makes using a dock a little easier. An HP Elitebook is also lighter but... whatever. This may be specific to market prices in New Zealand but it's a no brainer for me. Of course, the 3060 GPU means I can play games as well. But we're all getting too old for that so...

I use a gaming laptop for programming, because I like to game during the day. People usually think they can be really hot and loud, but for 90% of us, they don't reach that point. Usually you don't need the full power of the CPU while doing most of the programing tasks. There are some scenarios where I have to use a mac like using safari or IOS simulator.

@@AB-tx5wo you can play with the profile and wattage, I got g14 pretty silent by default, but I have a work profile which uses only 18w on CPU and 45W on GPU. On battery I am using 10w which gives me about 10h of battery life, ofc depending on the task. For games I am going with 25w on CPU with max on GPU that's noisy but since its for gaming its ok.

I am a software developer and in my former employment we were using a Jurassicly old laptop. The reason why we opted this time for a gaming laptop not because we can play games but generally because gaming laptops possess excellent speed during runtime. we did consider apple products but because it still has too many apps that it has yet to support, we opted for a conventional approach.

I use a gaming laptop for development, it has a 2070 with max q (the max q indicates that it's a laptop version of the 2070, almost as powerful as a full 2070 but abysmal cooling) and i've had it for about 2.5 years now. i love this thing, it's always fast and when it isn't it's because it overheated. compile times are low and machine learning stuff is a breeze. i don't do game development but i like knowing that i could do it on this machine if i wanted to

@namankoshta3637 if you're going for game development then going with windows would be a better choice because in Mac m1 you can only develop game for iPhone only and it doesn't have that many features like how a windows laptop have and you can do much more then that in windows then in Mac m1 and Mac m1 will not support alot of gaming development languages, yes you can use a virtual machine but it's not that good in virtual machine compare to a windows laptop because it also requires and good GPU.

AAA editor with game alone eats 40GB RAM + Visual Studio, etc. A full rebuild would be around an hour on one PC but we use distribute thee workload among the team's PCs, so it is ok. I know the windows machine with Nvidia card should be the obvious choice but I really love how quiet the fans are on a Mac, the chance to work with just battery power and now even the chance to work with 64 or 128 Gb of Ram... while the best you can do with a 4090 in a laptop is 12 or 16 Gb....

Used an old dell Inspiron 13" 4th gen dual core i7 8GB, that machine had some severe heating issues, I mean, if I put it under load for 2 mins, it would take a long nap for 30 mins, and now getting a 16GB M1 MacBook Air, I am still astonished how cool it is, but I used that laptop till 2021, and it was "workable". The only reason I got this m1 was that I needed to get into mac os for some dev work, but even now, if someone hands me a regular i3 or i5 with 8GB, I can still somewhat work with it.

Linux support is a big issue in gaming laptops I’ve tried to choose a laptop for a dual boot setup (Linux for my job and Windows for gaming and some testing). “Business” Dell/Thinkpad laptops are fine but literally all gaming machines I considered had issues with Linux, according to the info I googled. And all those ugly RGB LEDs… Meh

I would strongly recommend taking a look at Thinkpads. By the time you spec up 16BG of RAM, 1TB ssd, it will be 50% of MacBook Air. Also, Thinkpads still have cooling blower on the side, which means that if your laptop is loud, it is really doing some cooling (Dell XPS, cough cough). Just choose the AMD processor and you will be golden. And the keyboard is just amazing - I have T14 with R7 processor, this may be the best laptop I ever owned. Compared to Dell XPS 15 (Precission 5550) from work, it is just better. Yes, Dell is built better and has much better trackpad, but it is so frikin loud. Just watching YT makes it warm and the fans start making noise. T14 reamains silent until you hit a big compile or start a VM

@@harishvarkannadasan5555 I used the t14 gen 2 with AMD - awesome, and p14s with Intel and Quadro GPU - sucks. Intel got extremely hot evenwith the most basic tasks, battery life was under 2h, and it was slower than AMD. I would recommend the T14 gen 3 or 4, with AMD. If you need an nVidia GPU for ML, then get something like X1 Extreme, or just go with Asus ROG G14

I'd love to see you compare one of the new Intel 12th gen Core series against the M1 Max for some of the more strenuous development tasks and/or for running resource hungry virtual machines. Some of the canned benchmarks I've seen on the 12th gens are really impressive. Surely you have enough clout by now to get Dell/MSI/ASUS, etc., to hook you up with an eval unit?

04:16 web devs with 8Gb RAM, that's asking for a really bad time. Web devs need to run a bunch of stuff, from just DB and Backend, and the heaviest of browsers (chrome), alongside a bunch of other browser crap (Vscode, Postman/insomnia, the app itself, and more), and that's the light side. The heavy side is to replicate part of the cloud entirely for local development, most likely a devspace (that's kubernetes) with several services including Kafka. if you are learning HTML + CSS maybe you can run 8gb of RAM, if you are also doing JS, that's most likely one of them fat frameworks with their sluggish tooling. Backend Golang, is way lighter than the "web dev" stuff.
