A lecture on the range of data that can be gathered when doing participant observation by Graham R Gibbs taken from a series on research methods and research design given to masters (graduate) students at the University of Huddersfield. This is part 2 of two, and looks at the details of observing and taking field notes during participant observation. Collecting information about settings, events and social differences are considered as well as creating indicators, typologies (both emic and etic) and charts as ways of recording data about the research setting.

This is an extremely accessible set of lectures for those who want to get a clear understanding of ethnography and what the filed entails in plain English. It offers a rich, rigorous and rounded view of the subject. I would recommend these lectures to new entrants to this field of work.
