I’m in Pensacola, and got the bright idea to start some lettuce at the beginning of August, thinking it would take a week to germinate and a week, at least, to get to transplant size. I started several 6-cell flats thinking they would take about a week to germinate. I put them in the shade, under my deck umbrella, and they started popping up in two days. That was not what I wanted. Now I have lettuce to deal with in 96 degree heat. I’m putting the seedlings in the Sun in the morning and evening when the temps are ONLY in the 80s to 90s. I’m hopping temps come down in the next couple weeks so I can get my cool weather stuff in the ground. You gotta love Florida gardening
@SouthernDirtGardener Жыл бұрын
They most likely will start bolting right away. Though you might have some luck in part shade. You may even be able to get a harvest if it starts to cool down for you guys. I'd be curious to know the outcome.

Thank you for showing the less than glamorous look of an August garden in Florida. Just when I think I'm doing something wrong, I see this and realize it isn't me as much as it is nature. My garden is in containers, so I don't have to worry much about weeding. However, we are setting up two water troughs as raised beds. Spent two days this week getting them leveled and adding stone to the bottom. Holding off on the soil for now in case one of the tropical storms in the Caribbean moves up the Atlantic side of Florida. I am really excited to see what I can grow this fall.

Love the kids digging through the sweet potatoes! Those summer peas go by many names, cow peas, zipper peas, crowder peas, and several others. We plant them every year in April in large pots. This year after the first flush of pods I threw some extra fertilizer on them, then 2 weeks later my wife did too. Second flush was fantastic! Threw more fertilizer on and now into the third flush for the first time! We love them. Loofas are one of the best pollinators attractive ever. We also have luck with butternut squash in the summer. Tomatillas did great to, sweet and tart, great addition to the stir fry. Ken

Hey Ken!!! Good to hear from you. How did you shell your peas? I have 4 different veritys of peas. I was surprised on how many bees we had this summer. Thanks to the Luffas! When did you plant butternut squash? I'll have to add that to the list to plant next year! Thank you!
@kenbrown52173 жыл бұрын
@@SouthernDirtGardener The first time we planted loofah was 2004, Charlie blew the fence down. My neighbor asked me what the hell you growing there, mutant cucumbers?! The butternut was a volunteer from the compost pile that came up in April. Except for powdery mildew and a minor worm infestation they are just about pest free. The peas, my wife loves to shell them in the afternoon with a stiff cocktail. We have given up on the English peas, they always get a fungus and die from the ground up. Cow peas are susceptible to rust fungus and aphids, which carpenter ants actually treat like milk cows. I have still not seen you amend your garden with your composted cow and chicken poop. Your garden needs a boost desperately! You could triple the harvest by doing that. Your friend in gardening, Ken

August in Florida is especially brutal for gardening. 🥵My garden looks like a big jungle right now bc I grow so many vining plants and they all tangled with each other on top of my trellises! At least one variety (called upo or opo squash) is producing heavily right now! Have you tried growing pigeon peas? I think you would like growing it bc it becomes a tree and grows a bunch of peas you can eat. I grew some last year but didn’t save any seeds. I bought some off a KZbinr called Dan Permaculture Food Forrest. He has a couple videos (or more) about Pigeon Peas.
