I was super intimidated the first time I did a language exchange, so I wanted to make this video to give some ideas to those who are wanting to start. Let me know in the comments if you have any tips or topics to share! Thank you so much to Busuu for sponsoring this video! If you'd like to try out the app, you can download here: Web: bit.ly/shelby_busuu Mobile: bit.ly/shelby_busuu_app

Great suggestions! The one about writing definitions in the target language is especially helpful to me. To add onto your Q&A tip, I think it’s good to know the who, what, where, when, why and how of your target language (e.g. Why are you learning? Who’s teaching you and how? When/where did you start learning? Have you been to a country that speaks the language? etc.) These are questions any native speaker would want to ask someone learning the language, so doing debate-style prep beforehand helps a lot here as well

Really love how you break things down and how motivated you are learning Japanese. It’s something I want to do as well and it’s really hard lol

Great video Shelby! I’ve been practicing with a tutor for a while and one exercise I like is doing mini ‘book clubs’. We start by having me describe the plot of whatever book I’m currently reading, and then she’ll prompt we with questions about the characters and events. It’s great for solidifying new vocabulary from my books 😁

Ooh that's a good idea! I'll have to read more books in order to do this one 😅

I use HelloTalk myself to practice my Japanese, which seems similar to Busuu. I might consider using it since every other person I talk to on HelloTalk seems to confuse it with Tinder. Japanese is my 5th language and your tips are solid. I'd add 2 pointers. 1. Don't underestimate the muscle memory of speaking. Singing is good. Sounding more authentic helps overcome anxiety. A language is as much physical as it is mental. And 2. Explore your own interests in that language. The basics can be boring. Whatever your hobby might be, see how people who speak that language approach it.

Thanks for this! I think I’ve been studying Japanese for about as long as you. I’ve done lessons with a tutor on italki but I’ve been too intimidated to find a language exchange partner up to now. This video inspired me to maybe try and jump into that.

I started to learn Japanese only because of Busuu. My first thought was, "Why don't I learn hiragana and katakana?! It looks so easy on Busuu" and I got dragged into learning. By the way, have you finished reading the AoT manga? How satisfied are you with the ending (from 0 to 10)?

Also from experience I can tell that having a language partner is good if you want to learn to say stuff like "hello" and very basic stuff because most people will not talk to you more than a couple of days so you constantly start from zero. For that reason and also for having very many bad experiences I actually don't recommend language exchange anymore.

I really gotta try talking to someone. I've been learning (not very disciplined since I can't understand anything but a few words here and there) for about 4 years now. I occasionally use HelloTalk but I'm just somewhat nervous to delve into it since I know I'm gonna be pretty lost at the start.
