After backpacking around Asia for more than 3 months, most recently in the tropical islands of Thailand and Bali, we didn't have proper winter gear for the below freezing temperatures of Harbin, China. So we wore everything we had.

I use to live in Winnipeg in Canada with similar climate, guess you get used to the cold but this seems a lot of layers to be comfortable :)

True, the main problem is that we had just come from tropical Bali, so all our layers were thin. So we wore everything we had. :) -Brian

You are right, surviving in Harbin becomes easy with multiple layers of clothing...I am in Harbin for my PhD and it's my first winter here. In fact, I visited Ice n Snow Festival yesterday and found several layers of clothing helpful to stay warm and spend app two hours in the festival...it was fun.

There is no cold but bad clothing. I've been outside at -30°C. It is doable with proper dressing. But 2 hours is a very long time. I would stay out for 30 mins.

Love that quote. I know Scottish people say that too (since it's always raining there!)-same in Alaska where I grew up. No bad weather, just bad clothing! We found it surprisingly doable and surprisingly easy to adjust to also. 30 minutes is definitely a smarter time frame to stay out. That would've been more ideal for us, but hey, it's an experience! -Isa

Not something we do on a regular basis and looking back (this was over 5 years ago), it makes me cringe a little with how germ-aware I am now. -Isa

That's so exciting! Snow is so fun and Harbin has SO much of it! I no gloves when I arrived. Luckily, there is no shortage of winter clothing there. 🙃 - Isa

This is super helpful! I'm a Harbin native taking a bunch of friends there and this saved me a lot of typing/nagging/"yes, you really do need that many layers"-ing

Nice video man! I personally think instead of a scarf you should wear a ski mask! It will keep your face warmer and will be less of a fuss!

We had been travelling in warmer weather for 3 months prior and were on a budget, so we decided to make do with what we had-for the most part. We picked up gloves and boots for me and the coat for Brian as the weather got colder. But ultimately, the layering worked! -Isa
