Thanks for breaking this down, Babatunde. as I've been thinking along these same lines. In Portland Oregon, I've seen pple wear jeans to the matinee, and there are often children at those as well. We've done middle of the week, matinee and opening night. We love to dress up, even though Portland isn't a very dressy city. We have gone in historical costume as well. For last year's Rusalka the opera house encouraged costumes and there were whole mermaid pods. It was a beautiful production and Dvorak's only opera. I highly recommend a listen.

I never thought about going to an opera until today. This seems like a genuinely fun date night.

True! I dressed according to the house, the time of day, season and the actual opera: Cosi fan Tutti vs Rhinegold vs Carmen. I can't wait until I can go again.

Great topic. I'm not surprised "the old guard" still gatekeeps how to dress for the opera Personally, I'm not trying to pull up in sweats, but I'm definitely dressing according to my style expression and adding hints of...Snobcore, I guess. (idk). QUESTION: I've seen some streamed/televised operas where the singers were dressed extremely casual. Like, "Turandot, But It's Home Depot". These were not obscure operas; they were old standards (Puccini, Wagner, etc.). Is that common?

I think that might've been cut off

I wore a crop top to the opera once and old ladies looked at me like I wore a shirt with g0re on it. Like, mind your own damn businesses!!!🤣
