@sneaeky I wouldn't wear a hoodie to the theater, for starters, unless it's a very deliberately grungey establishment. A sweater would look nicer and fit better under a hooded coat as an added bonus.

@nhumma Something I think you and Antonio have forgetting is the level of dress that the girl friend is going to have. (assuming that is static) And the guy really needs to make sure he's dressing up to her level to best compliment her. If the theater is casual, the girl is still going to dress well because of the dinner after. The guy needs to as well. It doesn't matter if they're the best dressed couple in the theater. If she's going to look good, so should he, ABSOLUTE MUST.

My wife and I will be going to the nutcracker this December. The only dress attire I own are a white dress shirt, a light grey dress shirt, black dress pants, six ties, and a pair of black dress shoes. Would I be able to pull this night off with a blazer in this mix?

Yeah, not a lot of Theater her in WI. I've gone to community theater on occasion... its laid back. My guess with the gentleman who wrote is that he's looking for something new (to him and his girlfriend) to wear. She's seen him in his only suit already, and it wouldn't have the impact he would like. That's just a guess. But I'd recommend hitting thrift stores, where suits for common sizes are not hard to find. And if he saves enough, there is always the option to take it to a tailor after.

One might also check out the website of the theatre, if they have one. Here in AZ, the two theatres I've been to both say they welcome their patrons to be comfortable, whether than means suit and tie or jeans and a t-shirt. Perhaps consult w/ your girlfriend, as well, for assistance. I've always worn an odd jacket or suit to the theatre here in AZ and never felt uncomfortable or out of place. Dress to the occasion, which seems to be special for you, and get lost in the performance!

damn man u always got a video for my needs!! going to see star wars today, i live Minnesota, its cold, normally wear a pea coat but worried it will be too hot in theatre and i dont really want to just take it off and put it on the dirty chair... maybe should i just wear a tee shirt underneath with pea coat on top? #firstworldproblems

@therealgarygnu I've been to some nice WI shows in and around Madison and Milwaukee, but we're certainly not talking the same dress standard as a Broadway show in New York City or anything like that out here.

Would there be a dress code for going to a concert where the performers on stage are dressed in a certain way? Chicago Symphony, for example, wears white tie attire, while, say, Orlando Symphony wears black tie. Either way, most orchestras wear tuxedos. Now, nobody shows up in tuxedos in the audience, but I am just wondering about it. Most show up in odd trousers and jacket, but I'm wondering if there's a historic dress code. Usually being on the stage, I don't really know.
