I just picked some hossinator tomatoes I started in September. Took forever to grow with the cooler weather and a pain to have to cover them during these last few cold spells. But I had dozens of almost softball size tomatoes.

Lemon Boy Plus doesn't taste anything like a regular yellow or orange tomato. It's quite sharp and tangy. It's really good in that lane though. LBP is easy to tell against any other tomato.

I just got a shipment from y’all this past week. Have most of what you just reviewed. Been planting 20ish varieties the past few years trying to find a core group of 6 or so varieties to plant every year. So far hossinator, red snapper, and lemon boy have made the grow every year list.

I'll definitely give some of these a try. I like the fact that you have some with good disease resistance. I want to try that Purple Boy and Better Boy Plus especially. My regular Better Boy had trouble in the humidity this past summer in Georgia and my two Cherokee Purple plants died soon after transplanting them in the ground. I was so disappointed because I really love Cherokee purple and was looking forwards to getting some fruit. My Better Boy produced a few but kind of a wimpy harvest.

Thanks so much Greg for giving us such a great schooling on tomatoes. I love to buy my seeds and to listen to y’all because I’m in the south (AL) also. What would be your best recommendation for a high acid, high yield, disease resistant tomato. 😂😂😂😂 I don’t ask for much do I? lol Also, have you ever tried growing jet star tomatoes. I’ve grown them the last two years and they produce so many tomatoes and no disease problems. I’m so eager to start my seeds but know it’s a little too soon. Hope to see y’all at Petals in the spring.

When your plants start getting alot of disease you should have a 2nd wave to plant. It sucks pulling plants that are producing still but its for the best. ( indeterminate tomatoes 🍅 is what im talking about)

I had to scale back the varieties of tomatoes this year because my goal is reliable production. I didn’t get that last year so this year it’s my goal to grow a lot more. I think I got maybe 8 cups of diced tomatoes and that was enough for a small batch of canned chili. They also struggled with BER and died off early due to heat. One type never even produced one tomato. I won’t be replanting that kind. Instead I will plant reliable, heat resistant tomatoes and lots of cherry tomatoes because those just keep on ticking for me here. I’m also going for paste tomatoes mostly because that is what we eat. I’ll be canning them and we don’t eat many fresh except the cherry tomatoes. I tried the roadster, Carmello and a few others as well as San Marzano and was disappointed with all of them. So Roma, Amish paste, federle, Homestead and Floridade are the ones I picked this year. They’re already planted and in my greenhouse with heat mats. I’m excited to see what grows! I’ll be transplanting them into 10 and 20 gallon grow bags as those seem to do well for me. I was able to keep a hybrid husky cherry tomato plant alive and producing in the greenhouse over this winter so far though the freeze hit it hard, I was able to get a harvest beforehand and that was awesome! Hopefully it will survive and I can keep getting those tomatoes. They’re reliable and this plant was a sucker from earlier this years plant which died off with the heat. This one made it. Wish me luck!

I just pulled up my Fall Tomatoes and they had Nematodes ( Mountain Merit, Celebrity Plus, Fla91 ,Hossinator,Red Snapper)The only ones that didn't have them was Bella Rosa and Sunset Torch for some reason. I'm pulling my paste tomatoes tomorrow (Tachi ,Shelby)hopefully they won't have any. Also I think the Hossinator is the same as Mountain Merit I can't tell them apart.

Hey! We grow tomatoes here in the south west too! Didn’t hear one recommendation. We battle early cool weather and hot mid season weather. Our tomatoes don’t start performing until mid August. If our frosts are late, we have a good season. Frosts are from early October to mid November. November 19 this year.

I have a question about tomato growing. I live in the upstate of South Carolina in Greenville county. Our Summer heat and humidity always cause us issues by July. I think it is blight maybe? We trim the lower leaves and use mulch (mainly fall collected leaves and tree trimmings we have ran thru our wood chipper) and we only water from the bottom but it is inevitable that we have issues. We tried more disease resistant varieties last year and had better success but I love the older heirlooms and would still prefer to grow many of those. So my question is, should we start seeds in early July knowing we will have these issues and be ready to set out new plants by the end of the month and it be the same variety or should they be different types? Also, when we pull those tomato plants out would we be better served to rotate to a new crop and plant the new tomato plants somewhere else? (Not behind another nightshade member) Suggestions for us?

I Think you should change your growing season. Plant early spring, harvest in June. The heat in July will cause damage with any variety. Greg
