I know this is a late response a very late one and I hope you see it BUT carnotaurus was on isla sorna two specimens at least and this is cannon now why this is important is cause they were never shown in either the second or third movie and unlike their future iterations in JW these two had the special mutation of camouflage. The reason I bring it up is cause its very likely that its very likely that it was the large ancient crocodilian

Spinosaurus can swim, but not as fast as a parasailing boat. Not to mention how much it would have to slow down to reach up out of the water and eat 2 people.

He was a marsh land origin dino. It would've been dead if had gone into open ocean. Too many currents and too big to keep on the surface with tiring. Just putting that out there. No way its possible.

You do realise for any corpse to reach that stage, it takes a few months at least to decompose. Not to mention if Eric were to throw someones head, the brain matter itself would still be in there due to no prior skull injury.

Remember the scene were Eriks gets flown to the nest of the pteranodon, in that nest you see that the younglings have been eating a human prior to this (skeletal remains). This makes me believe that they were the once killing the driver on the boat. The mist giving similiar effect as to the mist on the bridge in the aerodome, same "shaking effect" when it lands on the bridge/boat also.

I believe it was 2-3 pteradons that were probably already perched on some rocks within the fog. Saw the boat and two easy meals and flew over attacked then returned to the rocks without ever leaving the fog.

watch the beginning on best speakers possible its definitely the Spinosaurus. You will hear huge loud foot steps then a big splash. it jumped in and garbed them off the boat. I have a home theater and the surround sound makes this super clear to hear it happen.

Maybe the writers wanted it to stay a mystery, so that our first impression of the island was the same as Ben and Eric: an attack so fast and explainable that we can’t understand what happened, even after years of brainstorming. Imagine Eric recalling the attack 10 years later, trying to understand what happened just like we are right now. If that’s what the writers were going for, they definitely nailed it. The damage on the boat definitely says pterosaur, but the way the attack unfolded definitely says plesiosaur.

Decided to rewatch that scene, and i heard not only the splash, but also when something starts shaking the boat in the fog, you can hear the engine revving up 2 times, as if the propeller suddenly went out of the water, and as such spinned much faster. I personally think that it is because of the spinosaurus bumping the boat either from below or elsewhere

Haven’t watched the video yet, but I would venture to guess that what killed them was bad writing. Whenever I think about it I always reason that larger animals like a mosasaurus would have to damage the boat more and something smaller would’ve left bodies behind if they weren’t still on the boat. Pterosaurs can be completely ruled out in my opinion because of the fact that they’d’ve likely been seen by Ben and Eric while paragliding. Anyway, time to watch the video. Edit: Plesiosaurs completely slipped my mind and make the most sense when taking the franchise’s artistic license into account.

Pterosaurs can be completely ruled out because they were hunting for fish under the cover of the fog, and didn't even notice or care about the parachute far above them? Yeah no, the minimal damage of the boat's roof and the missing carnage you'd have with anything else that could've attacked just rules out anything other than Pterosaurs.

Imagine if the Spinosaur had young to feed. It heard the boat's engine and caught its prey, then returned to the island to regurgitate and feed the young. It is intelligent and knows human having been born among them. Its mouth is large enough contain two humans. It knows humans can be violent so the whole hunt is conducted stealthy including the escape. Later when the plane crashes it knows it is only one plane and is able to count the humans inside and knows they are most likely targeting the lone human. They can be food, but they are also a threat and the lone human increases their threat by possibly having and passing on information. It is a good thing it brought down the plane and thrashed it so any weapons inside would likely be destroyed.

@orochi_slayer 5422 If the animal was merely a brute the boat would be ripped, but perhaps this one is smarter than we think? There were two prey on that boat and it found two in its mouth. It might also dislike sharp metal in its mouth and the fog was extremely local. It gets what it wants efficiently and then gets out. An intact boat is also excellent bait for human prey.

If you watch closely, you can see the cloth roof of the boat being torn. Definitely could be a pteranodon ripping it while trying to grab the crew.

Me, I believe Pteradons attacked the boat. If it was the Spinosaurus, which is so strong and big, it would have knocked the boat in another direction or destroyed it. When we see the boat, It's still going in the same direction. When the boat goes into the fog, it looks like something landed on the boat and is shaking it, and the crew is gone when the fogs clears up.

Flying creatures like the Pteras had the best chance to keep up with the moving boat so it was likely them. Even the original shooting script showed them as the culprit in a deleted helicopter attack sequence.

Now it’s an educated guess that will never be answered tho the ending of The Lost World does hint at other flying animals being free before the JP3 Pteras were. And even that isn’t necessarily a full confirmation if it’s just another dream sequence.

I like to think there was a small island hidden by the fog. The boat sailed very, very, close to it and the crew was snatched by whatever predator(s) happened to be there at the time. Perhaps a small island or reef was a good fishing ground for a larger predator who could literally snatch or bite fish out of the water.

The pteranodons were in that misty area, it would be full of them, we know they love misty/dark areas, the entire bird cage is covered in mist, so the boat went through and the VERY hostile pteranodons attacked.

I would just like to know how that lil boat made it through the open ocean from the mainland. Even if the boat had survived the waves crashing into it without dumping everyone overboard or capsizing, where's the fuel capacity on a boat that small to make a trip there n back? I doubt a small ragtag parasailing outfit would have a large boat to get to the island then launch the small boat into rough waters without having at least a second boat as a spotter in case something went wrong

The barge that is used in JP2 to drop Ian et al off on the island isn't exactly a big vessel and had to make the return trip. Something like that could easily carry enough smaller vessels on deck to cover spotting, etc once it's closer to the island.

@@rickau the setup from jp2 was being funded by ingen. Most likely cost a whole lot more than a trip to do some parasailing around a restricted island paid for by what's his face could afford. Also, assuming the research rv was already connected to it's trailer to save time when they got to the island, the barge would have to be long enough to hold a, what, 60-70ft long rig? Along with the suv, n any other equipment secured to the deck. While also providing a crew quarters n fuel capacity to easily make the trip. Not a giant rig by most oceanic standards, but definitely big enough to manage for the right price. So to turn a profit chartering parasailing they would have to take groups out. Unless what's his face has a butt load of money, which if he did, Mrs kirby could have spent a bit more on the mercs to get a bigger crew with better equipment. N let's face it she had to have been using his money cuz mr kirby definitely couldn't swing the pricetag for some ragtag mercs with a lil plane n some pew pews, on a hardware store owners salary. If you made it this far, congrats lol. Now I'm gonna say nothing I just said actually matters cuz there seems that there wasn't a spotter crew or anyone else out there on the parasailing trip

Lol plus that's a tall hulled center console so there's no possible way they're launching that at sea or carrying it on the side or deck of another ship, that's what zodiacs or tenders are for. So yeah it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense for a small inlet boat like that to be that far from mainland

You can disregard the early script but you cannot disregard what is actually shown on film. Plesiosaurs, the Spinosaurus and anything large can be ruled off. They would have smashed the boat. Apart from that, there are two things clearly shown. One is that initially they are violently pulled down, which means something landed on the boat. Then they are violently shaken up and down. None of this can be explained by a creature from the sea suddenly snatching the boatmen. Something clearly steps on the boat, moves heavily and violently and then leaves, without causing damage to the boat itself. Only two animals could have possibly done this; either raptors or pteranodons. The film still suggests pteranodons. Why? A) because they attack from rocks near the shore. The only animal that could have waited and nested there would be pteranodons. B) the sail of the boat has holes in it. C) They are in fog. The pteranodons were introduced in this very film as coming out of the fog (and it's not the first film to have done that). Now, would they have seen them? No. They were clearly nested in the rocks, where they were covered by fog or they were there because they were hunting for fish. Either way, pteranodons actually lived near shorelines, pretty much like modern birds that hunt for fish, like seagulls. Also, there's no splashing sound before the attack, that's clearly the boat jumping up and down on the surface of the sea. You can hear that identical sound numerous times in this sequence.

When the boat first enters the fog (correct me if I'm wrong) it goes between 2 islands/rocks or a rock and the main island. What if they were attacked by the pteranodon which could have hit the pull rope to the para sail while they were attacking the boat causing the jerking motion on the para sail. The reason I think this is for starters if they were in the fog the 2 para sailing wouldn't have seen anything and the noise of the boat would have drawn attention to the boat not the 2 in the air and the boat was in the fog long enough that a frenzy could have happened and the bodies carried back to the nests on the rocks/island, I also think the splashing/footstep sound was the sound of the boat hitting waves and splashing down.

Deleted scenes say it was Pteranodons, but they shouldve been stuck in the bird cage still, especially considering they make it a point to have them accidentally leave the cage door open.. In the film, its heavily implied the Spino did it, because you can hear loud footsteps before the attack, and thats our main villain dino of the movie.. Its also probably filmed as a remake of the boat crash, when the plane hits the Spino, too.. But considering the boat is so far out in the water from shore, its kinda weird that the Spino wouldve been the attacker.. I would say it was the Spino, though, and maybe it was just shallow enough water where the Spino snatched them

It really is not surprising to me that JP3 opened up a massive plot hole literally in the first scene of the film. Like you said, they were writing the script as they were filming it. What a mess, I can see why it killed the franchise until 2015. It's not completely terrible, but the downgrade from the first two is blindingly obvious.

it was not a "plot hole" at all. there are things called mysteries, they are used a lot in movies. they used this scene to keep you thinking "what the hell happened to those guys" to be completely fair, you don't have to have a concrete answer to what happened or is happening in a film, as long as it's cool or scary, people won't care

I agree with Slushy. Just cause something doesn’t get answered doesn’t make it a plothole. And since jurassic park at it’s core is a horror/thriller series, its cool that there are certain things we just never fully learn about. And yes, jurassic park three is objectively not good compared to the first one. But I love it to death depsite its flaws, and I will die on that hill

Could possibly be the Spinosaurus, since I think there's some lore that states that Wu engineered it to be incredibly aggressive, but left behind on the island because of that same reason.

This may sound crazy but it's no crazier than the plot holes of jp3 haha. My theory is that its something that hasn't even been mentioned because it was being kept secret for whatever reason and looking at the way the boat top was damaged and nothing much else i'm thinking its possibly a group of hesperornis or something like that, they would live on land, usually rocky areas like the small bits shown but hunt mostly in water, maybe there was a group on a small isle that saw the boat and prey then all dove on it getting the humans in the water to attack them efficiently and thats why you never see any creature.

Remember that skull that Eric threw at the baby pteranodons how much you want to bet that those skeletons were meant to be the boat drivers. I mean think about it Eric was on that island for quite a while. long enough for his step dad's body to be completely picked of to the Bone of any meat and if that really was how the boat drivers went missing in the beginning of the movie then it would make perfect sense that they would pretty much just be straight-up skeletons left at the time when Eric nearly became bird food

Its been a while since I've seen the jurassic parks so I can't remember if dimorphodons were in them or not but I feel like a small pack of dimorphodons could've fit the margin well. Let me explain, the time period is too short for anything small to eat them Completely and the damage to the canopy isn't sufficient for something big like a spino or a plesio to have done it because the canopy would most likely be gone or hanging off and an attack from a creature of that size would knock the boat off course. My theory is that a flock of dimorphodons attacked the boat in the clouds causing the slash marks in the canopy as the crew tried to hide before eventually jumping over board to escape the fliers explaining the lack of remains other then blood smears, the shake of the paraglider could be explained by a dimorphodon hitting it during the attack or a crew member running into it during their get away. This could also explain why we never see them because the dimorphodons are more focused on trying to attack the crew that jumped in the water instead of chasing the now empty boat.

It’s actually stated to be the pteranodons in an alternate ending. The group comes across the wreckage, and it literally states that Dr.Grant recognizes some of the damage as coming from pterosaurs.

here's my theory. both of them, up there were facing the same direction (the island) which mean the they couldn't see behind them and unaware of the danger, would unlikely check their angles. an alone ptero could have been out, fishing. we never saw exactly how big was the fog cloud. the ptero could have bumped into the ship, his wings spreading large enough to hit everyone on board. the impact would have caused the destruction on the ship and knock out the ptero and everyone on board, falling of the ship. I really doubt the ptero were all locked where they were in the movie. if they were, food would have been lacking for long enough for them to starve. they surely had a way out and what the movie showed most probably was used as a nest for them.

A longneck ocean dwelling monster makes sense. Those skeletal remains in the pterrhanadons nest could be staff from Isla Sorna or the the team of poachers from Lost World.

I can't tell you how wrong it is to say it's not the Pteranodons, when we see the boat is still intact and only has tears on the roof covering of it, with blood splatters on the boat but no real mess to make us think it's anything else. Anything else, especially anything bigger, there would've been way more gore and the ship would be badly damaged and possibly flipped over, along with that roof being completely gone if not totally covered in blood. We know Pteranodons are known to be piscivorous and would explain why they'd be under the cover of the fog hunting and could quickly take out a small boat like that before flying away under cover of the fog towards an angle we don't get to see, that's also why they didn't notice the parachute and probably just assume it was a bigger predator or something.

There was human bones at the nest of the pteranodons. It’s been years since it closed, so you’d expect the bones of the people back then would have fallen off by then. I think the human bones there are 8 weeks old from the crew. But you raised a good point about pteranodons not attacking the people in the air but choosing to attack people in a fog. Mixture of poor writing and wanting to make the scene cool. Ultimately it was probably the pteranodons.

@@glenmartin7978 you’ve forgotten that the 2nd film had them flying free at the end. We see the gate unlocked at the end but it doesn’t mean there aren’t other ways of getting out. If there wasn’t any other way of getting out it would mean the bones were indeed just there for over a decade from when they evacuated the island. Still most likely what attacked the boat is some sort of pterosaur, just ones that don’t come from that specific dome.

I go with Spino. He was walking in the Shallow Water catching Fisch. It is not that deep close to Rocks and Waves. Tho the Pteros might not attack the Paraglieder. That thing is Huge for 2 People. And might look like a Way bigger dangerous "Bird".

I would suggest an elasmosaurus, although IRL from the shape of their dentition their prey was more likely fish, they WOULD make a Good "Snatch and grab" predator. In "The Land that time forgot" 1974, they used a "Plesiosaurus" to attack a U-Boat crew, BUT it was far too large to be one and was better described as an elasmosaurus.

So I was wondering, in another theory about this movie you speculated that there were juvenile Spinosauruses and I think it would be cool if it was the mother with her babies attacking the boat as she was teaching them how to hunt and that’s why there was some blood where the juveniles attacked and when one tried to escape the mother slashed at him and took him off the boat

I do think that the Mosasaur wouldnt have been full grown at this point in time so, although unlikely a giant, full grown mosasaurs could've snatched them... An infant one seems like a plausible explanation. However, as a kid, when i first saw this, i had a feeling it was a foreshadow of a new, big, baddy we haven't met yet. Which would be the pterandon. The idea that a lone mother was gathering food for rhe babies we see later makes the most sense to me. Also, when they find the parasail later with the boyfriend's body on it, it has rips going through it which I always assumed was from the pterandon before they landed. Which is why the boyfriend is already dead inside of it...

Reason that it wasn't Spinosaurus: the people in the sky would see Spinos back fin coming out of the water just as it is about to attack. Why do I think that? Well, there is also 1 more animal that does that: *sharks.* Remember that before the sharks attack, it raises up and the fin comes out of the water just like in the scene where Spino attacks Alan and others on that river

The Spino didn't had to be a fast swimmer or tear the whole thing apart due to the fog. The big waves just before surgest there to be a reef and the fog could had consiled a Spino allredy being there and just took the oppotunety to snach the right off the boat as it sailed past it without ripping the boat that much or for them or the Spino to make much sound. And even if the Spino did its roar, you most likely wouldn't had heard it because of the waves crashing in to the reef. Also on the logo, the skeleton is that of a spino rather than a T-Rex like in the first. If it had been a pteranodon there would be no clawmarks, because they hunt with their beak, and there would be no blood, because they would had flown away with their catch. If it was an aquatic creature, it would have had to jump in the boat, snatch the crew and then jump out again and with a whole lot of water still being in the boat. And again, there would be no claw marks. I conclude it must be the Spino.

Two others come to mind Barryonyx or Succominus personally, I believe it’s the Succominus, because we never seen it before ever in the movies furthermore, Barryonyx groups of them, maybe as for Succominus definitely have to be it and not spinosaurus that was the case that would have to be too easy and not sudden

What about baryonyx we have seen them swim in the sea and attack a boat in camp Cretaceous and they knew how to make a spinosaurus so who's to say they didn't make something smaller first?
