I agree. Mostly my speed isn't fast enough that trail braking would be any benefit. Especially on the big, heavy & slow Harley-Davidson ultra limited motorcycle or my slow lightweight Kawasaki klx230s dual sport. Engine braking alone is good enough most of the time.

I do it correctly by default about half the time. I don't hit the corners hard enough for it to be the constant method of turning. But sometimes in unfamiliar areas, I'll use it in different portions of a curve to tight things up.

@@chuckkelley5894 yeah eventually it has to become second nature :) I find myself engine braking more and more before corners and intersections, and keep edging that with a little throttle, until I have to brake or give it full throttle when it's all clear.

Apart from carrying more speed grom entry to exit, the actual mechanical reason is to stop the front suspension from unloading, look at what happens when you release the brakes, the front literally bounces up, this can cause huge instability just before/on entry of a corner, trailbraking keeps load on the front tyre

It’s funny because in car racing it means the exact opposite. You brake in a straight line trail before a turn to get to speed where you only have to turn the wheel one time/angle for the whole turn then gassing out the exit.

Watch MotoGP. All of the riders trail brake into the corners. That does two things. Maximizes tire technology in an area that is low risk-high returns….which is high G deceleration while bike is relatively upright and secondly, that steepens steering angle and aids in bike turn-in. Hang on too long to that brake or use too much pressure and you loose the front. One reason why you see low sides in corner entry. It’s a magical balancing act. Neat thing is that it should be practiced at low speeds so it becomes instinctual on the track. Surprising how much front brake can be carried into corners. Well done!!!!

@@MotoJitsu I think I should rephrase my question, since our riding environments are different. Where I live in Japan, the reachable speed is lower but the corners are much sharper. Narrow roads with speed limits of 30-40kph and a lot of tight hairpins. In the videos where you demonstrate it you’re going 70+ mph. I’m reaching the same lean angles going 25mph because of radius of the turns. I find myself using trail braking with front brake when I’m slowing down from maybe 40mph down to 25mph. Is it proper technique to load the front like that at those speeds, or am I better off unloading before and tipping in, dragging the rear, or something else? Best

On the highway, reduce your speed before you enter the corner, taking into account the condition of the road, weather, tar banding, undulations, other road users etc., and the distance you can see to be clear to enable your vehicle to stop should the need arise. Trail braking should be taught by a professional instructor, in the classroom, on a dedicated practice ground or race track and then and only then on the highway where the manoeuvre can be assessed, corrected if necessary or praised. Once you’ve lifted a number of lifeless bodies in leather baby grow suits from hedge bottoms, collected up guillotined body parts severed by “safety” barriers you will begin to understand the business of trail braking cannot be taught on a 30 minute video by individuals intent on maintaining an income stream. Practice the manoeuvre where it is safe to do so, use it only in an emergency, the highway is not a race track, unless of course, witnessing a young wife and her two daughters scream uncontrollably when you interrupt the packing of suitcases for the holiday, telling them their husband and and father won’t be with them but would she accompany you to the mortuary to identify the mangled body. Learn to ride at an advanced level by all means but not from a computer, arrive at your destination as quickly and safely as possible. No fun at all returning home to your wife and kids after attending a road traffic accident with multiple fatalities where one body is the same age as your son.
