In this video, Dr Tabish Saifee explains the multimodal treatment options currently available to patients with Essential Tremor.
Medication is most commonly used to suppress the tremor, although rarely do these eradicate the tremor completely. Injections can also be used, such as botulinum toxin, but the use of these is limited.
Therapy can help, including occupational therapy which is often used to adapt the patient's environment in order to make daily tasks more management with tremor. Wearables and devices also have a role to play, including weighting of the limb in order to try and dampen tremor.
Finally, Dr Saifee describes the longstanding successful role of surgical interventions, including MR Guided Focused Ultrasound, which has most recently been introduced as a way of creating a small lesion in the brain which can interrupt the signals involved in tremor, and significantly reduce the tremor.
