Climbed a tree in my yard today to get a run through on my gear. Had to go around about 5 or 6 limbs. Took me forever! It was quite a learning experience seeing how long it took to get set up going around all those limbs.

On a leaner add a couple of strap on steps to provide stability, it's what I do because we have more leaners than straight and lots of old bushy trees up here ,I hunt white oaks and hickory trees mostly and there's a huge mass of spruce trees close , then there is corn beans and milo on the East, South, and West

I live in Oklahoma. I can go to the woods, find a good location and spent 45 minutes searching for a reasonably straight tree. Our species tend to be squat and crooked. I sure would like some video ideas for climbing these gnarly things.

Great video. I have to say hunting the top side of a lean should be left to the advanced saddle hunter. The major downside is gravity. If you lean wrong or get caught off guard and fall, it is very difficult to get back to the top side of the tree with all your equipment hanging and gravity working against you.

I agree! I just got my first saddle and I'm already familiar with hanging from a rope, being a window cleaner, and know exactly what you're talking about. This is why it's so important to rehearse a many scenarios as possible in the off season.

I want to comment on trees that lean. When leaning away from you - impossible to sit cause it'll rack your cojones. Passing around branches is such a pain, but necessary. I like hunting out of large trees for security purposes, but saddle hunting is challenging me in that way. Great video. Thanks for all the content.

You have to use the tree in the way it will let you. When I hunt the top side, I don't sit. I lean/stand the the whole time. That's how I prefer to hunt most of the time anyway. I agree with you about larger trees. It's all about the pros and cons.

This is the first of your saddle hunting videos where you have shown (someone I think it was you) hunting with a rifle from a saddle. I have been thinking of asking you or DIY Hunter or someone about saddle hunting with weapons other than bows. In my hunting so far, I have been mostly used climbers, and I hunt with bow, crossbow, muzzle loader, shotgun, or rifle (whatever is legal and I will give me the best chance of getting a quick clean kill). One thing I love about hunting with from a climber when I have a gun (or crossbow) is how sturdy that seat rail is as a shooting platform. No one that I have ever heard of uses a support (other than their feet) for bow shooting, but anyone who is smart likes good support for gun shooting when any distance is involved. Have you or anyone covered how to support a gun when hunting from a saddle? The two ways I assume you could do it were leaning your gun against the tree and/or having a support from your tether to the gun (kind of a sling for the gun).

I rifle hunt from my saddle and love it. Generally I'm on the backside of the tree from the deer, which makes it easy to brace against the trunk.

@@wendyandwalter40 Fortunately, I have gotten some experience bow, muzzle loading, rifle, shotgun hunting from a saddle this year (that I did not have when I posted this question). I have found that there are a lot of ways to brace a gun from a saddle, the tree trunk and our tethers being my two favorites. I got my first buck from a saddle earlier this year and am really enjoying saddle hunting.

@@americanmastiff7138 it would be really hard on a mobile/freelance hunt depending on your climbing method. You almost certainly couldn't fit a lineman belt around that tree.

You can freelance it if you go to ropes. SRT or DdRT. Would still be hard for a morning hunt cuz you'd have to tie in in the dark. I'm currently doing alot of single sticking, but I'm moving towards ropes more. Besides spurs I think a good SRT set up is the easiest, and I hunt alot of public so spurs are of limited use.

Hey Greg, what is your average height in the tree? is it always about the same? Got the equipment in Jan., started practicing in the front yard, was nervous about changing a lightbulb in the house, now I am climbing to a little over 20 feet in a tree in the woods. been hunting pigs on corp. land, after season, I hunt them with my phone. figure if I can get a pic, that would be a shot opportunity. Anyway, love your gear, along with my Beast Sticks. keep up the good videos.

@@G2Outdoors appreciate the response, am using the same setup as the Bowhunter video that Mike did, the one you recommended. get about the same height as you. any suggestions on how to easily install/setup your platform. have a cut down version of the Mission platform, was a Christmas present, am using the phantom, Tethed ropes and the Ropeman I. can't find any videos of someone actually putting their platform to the tree and tightening up the strap/rope. They always cut the scene and come back with the platform ready to go. am using the Amsteel rope mod for my platform, trying to get more effective at setup. anyway, thanks for the help

Please don’t drill into trees like this. I’m sure if you look in a 20ft radius and find one that would work. There’s absolutely no reason to injure or even kill a tree just to hunt out of it a few times.

Hey SRT Saddle Hunter. I am brand new to saddle hunting and using the SRT method. I am learning a lot but have tons more to learn. So far as far as I can figure the topside of the lean seems better for sticks but the bottom side seems better for SRT. Do find that you have a hard time getting your platform level when hunting the downside?

Use a double line man's rope strategy where you use your tether rope with carabineers as a second lineman's rope and place it above the limbs as you encounter them.
