Feeders have come a long way since "the olden times" when I kept bees. We didn't feed much since we tried real hard to ensure the bees had plenty of bee produced stores all year. But when we did, and if there was a chill in the air, the entrance feeder went on top of the bees in an empty box. Dad didn't like to feed them ice cold syrup.

I bought the black cap and ladder feeders this year . At first they totally sucked they killed so many bees 🐝 After experimenting with styrofoam shavings , small pieces of wood Flattened balls of wax . And finally small 5/8"discs and odd shapes of plastic milk jugs slightly smaller than the ID.of the ladders .. Now my method is put 6 or 7 of these small discs in each ladder smoke the ladders pull one ladder smoke inside the feeder the bees will come out of the ladders fill the feeder and put the ladder back . I went from being discusted with the dead bees to absolutely no dead bees in the ladders . Absolutely none . I totally love these feeders for making queen breeding nucs and small hives as well as thin syrup in large hives to stimulate brood rearing . Thos pieces of milk jugs could be adapted to be used in any of the frame feeders .

What a great supply store. I haven't been anywhere for a year now due to lockdown and miss browsing a well stocked supply store a lot! I have used most of the feeders you showed us, mostly with success, but tend to go back to the simple inverted pail as a top feeder. You get the right size pail and it will fit in a medium box and it is very easy to use and completely illuminates any chance of bees drowning, while allowing for fast syrup uptake with minimum disturbance of the colony. (Some use them with a hole in their top cover, plugged when not in use, by I prefer placing them on the inner cover and with a medium box around it, an inner cover on top and then a telescoping top cover, as this avoids chilling of the syrup on colder nights).

Very knowledgeable video! We're in Ontario Canada, we installed our just about 2 weeks ago and it is weak after an ant invasion. Looking for the best feeder to get my ladies strong for overwinter, last inspection showed no honey stores. Thanks!

Hey there, James. They can be put back after knock out have been removed to feed sugar. And a food grade silicone may be used. Allow time for drying and fill with liquid for spring feeding. Thanks for watching!

Do the entrance feeders leaks through the tiny holes? (specially when the syrup is not thick.)

We don't experience many leaks with the entrance feeder method. The negative pressure inside the jar helps to keep it inside until it's pulled by the bee.
