So it might just be me, but I started keeping bees this year in hopes of having my own honey. I love honey. But once I got them and began working the one hive I started with I just couldn’t get enough of it. There is just something about the smell the the comb and the sound of their wings in the air that truly puts my mind at ease. I’ve been dealing with mental issue and have had a truly hard time transitioning from military life and it takes a toll on my family. But these bees and the people like you have given me something amazing, and I love being able to teach my kids and anyone who will listen about honeybees.

Keeping bees is truly therapeutic. I struggled to heal after serious injuries more than 10 years ago ago. Was in a wheel chair for some time after when I decided to keep bees as a self challenge to get me to go outside. Long story short I started with one hive and after 10 years I’m walking again independently and I’m keeping up with a average of 8 hives per year. Despite the painful experience of standing to observe my hives and the heavy lifting of boxes it has made me a stronger person. They are a reminder to me that small things matter more than we realize.

For the flying saucer feeder, you need a Vivaldi Board. It has a cut out circle to accommodate the feeder base, it's just high enough to accommodate the feeder, and has hardware cloth covered vents on both sides.

Fredrick Dunn KZbin has several methods on the round feeders. His latest questions and answers has a hack for them using a scrape board with a round hole!

Have been using the flying saucer feeder for about 2 years now I love them you do have to cut the opening in your inner cover to fit the bottom of the feeder. It holds two quarts and can be filled from the top without disturbing the bees at all. Also the clear plastic cup can be removed and dry pollen can be put in with just the outer cover in place. It's a good system works great

For the “UFO” make the inner hole cover slightly bigger and put it on top of the inner cover Then use a shallow box as a spacer; put top cover over it

I use 80 of the round rapid feeders. I simply cut off the snout on the bottom of feeder and place on/over the hole on the inner cover with a spacer. Refilling with no bees in face or disturbing the hive. Bee Happy HBM

I use a bucket feeder and it works perfectly! The sugar water doesn't leek around the rim. I like it because I can put 2 gallons on and not worry that they will have enough. I really learn a lot from your videos! Thanks for all you do!!!

I appreciate all of the information that David provides. And I have purchased his feeder boards which work exceptionally well. I have never met David, and we are not related. One could (as David often notes) build the exact same thing. I thought about doing that but did not do that for a combination of reasons - cost, convenience, and effort differential (buying, cutting, building), as well as wanting to support someone who has helped me a great deal. I just started beekeeping this spring. I absolutely love learning more and more about these wondrous creatures. I love just watching and studying how the entire colony works together and the role each bee plays. The inner workings of the colony is truly amazing. Everything from how the overall hive is constructed to the way the frames are drawn out and arranged is incredible to witness. I learn something new each time I observe them. This has been a very rewarding journey to embark on. My confidence and knowledge grow with each inspection and watching the colony grow in size and thrive has been incredible. I am so glad that this world has been opened up to me. I had know idea how amazing bees are and how rewarding being a beekeeper would be. I love beekeeping!! I have loved the idea of having my own bees since I was a little kid and we passed bee boxes in the field by my grandparents house. I was always amazed that thousands and thousands of bees knew which one was its home. They are amazing little machines. I have been letting the dandelions grow in my yard for years so the bees had a place to come to. When my neighbors want to scream because my yard is all yellow I want to scream because there’s is all green. Green is pretty but not good for anything!! I have lots of weedy areas for bees and other flying insects in my back yard. I love watching all the activity around them. I got my first bee hives this spring and I’m mostly winging it. Watching a lot of videos. I stand out there and watch them come and go. What a peaceful time. I have tons more to learn and I hope some day I become an expert like yourself (or least of all I get them to survive the winter). I’m def going to be heart broken if they don’t survive the winter. I've only just started Keeping this year but have wanted to for over a decade. So Glad that I finally done it and have not looked back. I have loved every minute of it since. I got my bees to pollinate my garden because we were mainly seeing bumblebees. What a difference with just the one hive. I started beekeeping because it helps me feel close to my dad. He was an long time beekeeper (over 60 hives) and I would learn from him but as most young folks I really didn’t get into it myself because I was busy with other things. After he passed away, I miss him terribly. Being in the bee yard really keeps his love, voice, kind words of wisdom and memory alive for me. As a new beekeeper I’ve noticed a couple of great benefits. I’ve noticed that my morning walks with my wife are more interesting as we pay attention to the blossoms on our three mile walk. From early spring through this second week of September, we can watch our bees on so many different plants and shrubs! Also, as our hive is close to our screened in porch, we can observe bee behavior as a hobby together! We also watch your videos religiously and are learning as we go. Bucket feeders are great for large quantities of hives an speedy feeding. Pop the plug out of top cover an flop the bucket an move on to the next hive.. But when we feed? We feed all the hives so we don’t seem to experience any robbing. But for small bee keeper set up? You can’t beat pop the cover drop in new quart jar on the inner cover an slap the cover back on !! The biggest advantage of the inside feeders is the syrup is maintained at warm hive temperature where as the buckets or outside feeders are acceptable to the out door temperature.. lol an I fully agreed with you on the entrance feeders! If you have a weak hive an feed them? They are not strong enough to protect the other entrance from strong hives robbing seen it in my first year with my girls.. Thanks for another great video ; However,,,,, I do have a complaint! While I enjoy our coffee time videos , how come the video doesn’t come with free ( coffee) ? o.o 😁😅😂🤣

Probably too late to bee in the running for the course but your videos are priceless. 1st year Beek here. The best part about bee keeping is telling others about the bees. 2 months in and I volunteered 1 days at our local Fair. I had so much fun and people were excited to hear about the life cycle of a bee. It made me realize how much I have learned in such a short time. I have started using the "lunch box" feeders. I have to say finding 0 yellow jackets when I refill is an absolute joy. They just seem to work well and keep other critters out of the syrup. Loved this video as I do all of your videos.

I am outdoors quite a bit but I haven’t been really paying attention to nature’s signs… i.e. bloom of golden rod is the signal for the actual end of summer (nature’s calendar). Thank you for sharing your knowledge of beekeeping. You inspire many people. I'm a gardner. I used to watch bees pollinate our garden for the first 2 years after we moved into our home. On our 3rd year we did not see any bees and I was concerned. I read online that the use of chemical pesticides and insecticides had killed many bees in the US. I hoped that the bees come back the next year, but very few bees were seen late in the summer. That triggered the thought that I should be a backyard beekeeper to help grow honeybee population. Last year was my first year of beekeeping, but they did not make it out alive from the crazy polar vortex we experienced earlier this year. I'm giving it another shot by having bees again. Hopefully they'll survive the winter.

I love beekeeping because I love helping bees flourish as they an integral and important part of our natural world. We’ve gardened organically for years and watching bees visit our garden, and enjoying the pollination process and knowing they are in a healthy place has been great! By the way, when they visit our hummingbird feeders I know the dearth is on! No matter how long we do this, I don’t think we will ever totally figure out these amazing and complicated insects. Before becoming a bee keeper 2 years ago I never realized how intricate their lives really are and what an inspiring example they are for us in working together!

I started bee keeping to "help save the bee's", but then I started watching them & learning. At first I enjoyed going out everyday with my first 2 hives, until the end of the first season & couldn't get within 10 ft b4 being stung. I still watch & learn. Thanks David, several years back when I started raising bees I learned my lesson about hive beetles and wax moths they cost me my entire investment that year. Since then I've experimented with a lot of different ideas from different folks and I discovered by accident a chicken coupe next to your bee yard can help out with the hive beetles and the chickens really love them. So I'm always checking my hives cause wax moths can sneak in and totally destroy a hive. I have discovered using mineral oil and wintergreen oil mixed in my digger helps take care of the moths and it also helps with the beetles. Thank you I enjoy your videos.

I use the lego looking amazon feeder outside the hive. I only use water in it. The bees love them and they hold water well. Never had one drown.

Give away comment. I love the organic nature of my bees and their hive. Watching bees build and care for their hive up close and personal is such an awesome experience. Hearing and watching them is so peaceful and calming. I can feel my blood pressure lowering each time I work with my hives. From the different colors of the pollen they bring in to their geometric build of comb leaves me in awe. There is never a dull moment with my bees. I'm always observing something new. Working with my hives give me a spiritual experience.

As a new bee keeper I love your Worth it or not videos, on social security I was only able to get one package this past year, already saving up to get more this next spring, also buying equipment for that. Wish i would have found your videos sooner. Its absolutely fascinating watching them work, my colony is very gentle, I only wear a hood to keep them out of my beard and hair. This next year I will also be setting up to put a shade cloth over the hives during summer to assist them to not get over heated. I have to restrain my self from wanting to open the hive just to watch them, and just do weekly inspections. I guess you can say we are in our fall flow here in the desert as we are having our monsoon season which causes hundreds of flowering cactus and wild flowers to do there annual blooming different plants other than the cactus and mesquite which is our spring flow. David, I first became interested in beekeeping a few years ago after the 60 Minutes piece about how bees were in distress. After that, every time I saw a bee I said to myself “You go, girl!” This year, everything came together to actually do it! We moved to a place in rural Iowa with some acreage, and a friend of mine became a beekeeper last year, encouraging me to get started. I spent the winter diving into research on this new hobby and rekindling my love for learning new skills. I started investing in hardware. I finally ordered two packages of bees and I was off and running. What keeps me interested? I find bees fascinating! Their building and brood practices. Their job distribution and sense of community. Their singularity of purpose. The buzz. The ritual of hive inspection. But most of all? The people involved in beekeeping. Everyone I’ve met in the community is kind of like a hive: all interested in sharing information and working toward mutual success. Thank you for being part of that for me.

What I love most about beekeeping is that it helps me to reconnect with my childhood when my grandfather used to bring a big slab of fresh comb, full of honey into the house and let us devour it. I am helping these little guys have a safe environment to live and do their thing. And, in turn, they help me in so many ways, by supplying healthy nutritious honey, and pollinating all my garden fruits and veggies!

David, 6:34. . I use those feeders and it goes on top of the inner cover. They work great. I have a "Community Feeder" that i use and love it. Well, it's a styrofoam cooler, LOL. What I love the most about being a Beekeeper, it is that after 5 years now of being a beekeeper I still learn every time i work them. The dedication they have to work for the colony impresses me. The various jobs/roles they perform is truly impressive. This time of year also, the smells my hives give off (Goldenrod) excite me every time i walk into the yard. They are truly an amazing little creation and where would we Bee without them. I'm looking to expand my knowledge also and debating on going through Beekeeping courses.

My favorite thing about beekeeping is watching the bees work as a single hive mind in their objectives (survival and reproducing with new hives). I can watch each bee doing any one of a multitude of jobs and it fascinates me how instinct tells them everything to do.

Great video Mr Burns! I originally wanted bees to pollinate the garden. I saw flowhives and thought "perfect. Bees and honey without ever having to open them up". I settled on just regular langstroth hives and quickly saw the error in my thinking. From the time I shook my 1st package in I was HOOKED!! I love opening them up and watching them. The smells and sounds too. To think that so many tiny things all work together for a main purpose is amazing to me. I dnt think Abt the cost or making or loosing money on bees...I've lost lots more money on way less enjoyable things for sure and in my experience when you start thinking Abt things like that it usually takes the fun out of it and bees are just that...FUN

Wow another great video I’m a beginner bee keeper and loving it, I love going into the hive and watch with amazement how they make the comb & fill it with honey and cap it over. Another good video, I’ve been using my Burns Bees Feeder now for about two weeks, the mason jar‘s upside down with the mix is really an easy and convenient way to feed my bees. I have an additional two mason jars so when I’m ready to swap out the empties, I’m ready to go again. I’ll be doing this until I get my winter-bee-kind candy board from Mr. Burns. Good to hear Justin. Many decades ago a bee inspector told me to place my jars up on top of the frames and place a shell around it. I did, but crazy comb took over. That's why I invented my Burns Bees Feeder. Glad it is working for you.

Hi David, My granddaughter, now 13 years old, is a real working type girl. I thought last year that it might be a positive project for her and myself to get involved in bee keeping. Her family has a nice size lot, in Fontana California, and we started with a hive last April. We have been, together, to a class in San Diego and found many ways to keep our hive happy. We also volunteered this last May to help a bee hive club at the local County Fair. Working with Avery I have found it affords her and I a common way to talk, play and do something positive for our environment. She really takes pride in the hive and discusses many of the processes with other kids. She is looking forward to our first jar of Honey and seeing how her efforts come to that end. I jumped in to bee keeping this year with both feet this past April. I did it for the Ag Exemption on my property, only to find out its pretty rewarding. I started with an Ag package of 6 complete 8 frame langstroth double brood box bee hives. Then next I bought nuc from Texas Bee Supply a month later and bought a 10 frame langstroth for them, this was to add a little variety to my little aviary. Finally to my surprise in May, the three swarm traps I had out, all now had a swarm in each one. Which I built two top bar hives, kinda a knock of of Phil Chandlers design.. I've took the beginners beekeeping class from Texas Bee Supply, but there's a ton I don't know yet, but learning a lot thru doing and youtubing. It's a lot of work and heavy work is an understatement on a loaded 10 frame deep box full of capped sugar water, since I feed them alot the first few months, But I like hard work, the harder, the more rewarding. But the best thing about beekeeping, is just pulling up a chair and watching the bees come and go from their hives, its a different kind of relaxing, just watching them bee so busy, flying back and forth.. I'm happy I added this new chapter in my life and learning something new is satisfying too. Keep up the great videos.

I started beekeeping last spring and it couldn’t have come at a better time for me. As a police officer, between working in Covid situations and riots throughout last summer, beekeeping was and still is a nice peaceful getaway. It has been a great experience and stress reliever. I believe I have tried all the feeders you have shown today and have settled on the round hive top feeder. Most of them have flat bottoms but the last batch had the extension on the bottom. My inner cover was able to accept them well.

And David I love being a bee keeper for being a bee keeper I'm helping to preserve life in plants as well as human life. My neighbor next door has a pecan tree that he said hasn't bared fruit in several years, this year it is loaded with nuts thanks to the pollination of the bees. So I see the bees as preservers of life.

I use the 2nd one as a plain water source (just in case). I really like those bigger feeders for on the inner cover. Then it wouldn't need refilled so often.

Hi David, I just got a bucket feeder from Greg Burns over here in Ohio. This one has a hole in the lid where a plug is inserted. The plugs have one or more holes in it. I place mine on a migratory cover with a hole in it, but many just throw it on the inner cover and put a deep on top.

Hi from eastern Canada. With the second one, the yellow "Lego" looking one, I only use for a water source for the bees during the summer. I don't use it as a feeder. I also didn't think that the round feeder was that complicated. I have 3. You just put it in the hole in the centre of the inner cover and the bees go in and out of the centre of the feeder. The clear part just keep the bees inside the hive. I also use the square one basically the same way. P.S. They're not Canadian. They're made in China like everything else. I'm subscribed to this channel. It's really great. Really informative for a new beekeeper.

I really started beekeeping for the challenge of learning from the bees.I worked two summers at my brother-in-laws apiary in Indiana and found the nature of bees to be very interesting indeed. They are such complicated little critters and have so many things to teach us about survival of the colony that we call Mother Earth. I feel the more I can learn from these little wonders the more success I will have as a human going through life here in our colony.

David, I use this same round feeder for feeding on spring and now. I have middle top cover with hole between body and roof element. During winter this top cover space is filled with SPU insulation plate.

I use the round Alien looking feeder. It works great. You do have a 2” hole cut in inter cover and it fits right in. Keeps bees below. In winter take out clear plastic insert and add plain dry sugar for my camp style feeding. It is nice in colder areas. Just my opinion as a NC bee keeper.

Hello David, I really like the flying saucer feeder, the frame feeder is awsome if you into drowning bees! I tried adding wire,sticks ,sponges, but still junk!!! I find that it is crazy how a little bug fascinates so many people now still for1000s of yrs .for a taste of their honey! I love learning something new just about every time I get in a hive,I love the smell and their sound of a hive and I know its sick,but I love how they let me know that I mess up in handling them and that I need a good sting ! This is my 3rd yr, 1st 2 yrs I was scared and only got into them couple times ,some how survived, thanks to you and others I split them into 8 ,and got 60lbs of honey . Did I mention my wife loves how much $$ I have spent on them this yr!

hey David. I have the yellow bottom feeders. as they are, they do not leak but also do not let enough water out to be effective. i used a 3/16 drill bit and took a small half circle out of the lip of the cup and once filled, put on the bottom piece with that notch lined up with the opening and they work great.

I’m from Canada and I have been a beekeeper for 6 weeks what I love the most so far is Our 3 grandsons and my wife as really taking to it way way more then I ever thought. They always want to come and see Gumpy’s Bees. The oldest (Finnegan) has ask several time if I can get him a bee suit so he can come help with my bees. THE BUCKET FEEDER. I’m as confused as you are on the bucket feeder. Only thing I can think of is maybe there are some holes in the lid or your supposed to drill them? IDK.

Those frame feeders work really well in a long Lang hive. I've also used the flying saucer feeder on the long hives, just cut the right sized hole in a cover board. They are easy to fill because I don't even have to open brood chamber at all to fill it.

Hi David,I have been using the bucket feeder as a community feeder for about 2wks now.The bucket lids have small holes so when enverted they leak until vacuum happens.I put the bucket over two 2x2's on a table 50 yards away from my hives.Bucket holds 2gals.Thanks you for information on feeders.

Entrance feeder tend to make other hives want to loot it aso other bugs as wasps to come buy If you put them in the evening and take them in the morning is ok but really nice of you to actually mention it

I love to sit on a log just to the left of the entrance and watch my bees come and go. Every time of the day it’s a different story with them. I enjoy their interactions with each other and how sweet they are. When I am working in the garden or leaving my home I can’t help myself I take a few minutes to go and sit with them. Always to the left, because I learned pretty quickly that sitting in front or right of the entrance means being in the flight path and the poor bees would hit my head and tangle in my hair. I live in Chicago and keep a lot of flowers fruits and vegetables in my yard. Many of my neighbors will stop me to tell me that my bees visited them or send me photos of my bees in their yard. It’s helping the neighborhood look more beautiful and be more fruitful.

Never use entrance feeders during the dearth. 😁 I am in my second year of bee keeping and I use frame feeders and this year I learned a important lesson. We have been very dry with the bees having a tough time finding enough to eat. Make sure your colony is strong enough to keep the robber bees away.... It was like the dinner bell was ringing. I love your videos.

I am finally well enough to get into my hives today. I discussed this with my son last night. I had a dream that I was working with them and realized I didn't have my bee suit on. Quickly went in suited up. As I'm walking down to the hives...I see a line of bee's with suitcases leaving the hive. They absconded!! Then I saw my hives were destroyed. Someone robbed my hives, not a frame left. 😤 I checked my hives are still there and we will be working the hives following your check list. Thanks David for today's video very timely. I was ask by a nurse (after being stung in the garden) why I have bee's if I'm allergic? Ite are my girls. I enjoy beekeeping all aspects. Even after epipen, er visit, I still have 🐝 🐝 🐝 🥰

The holes in the big square feeder are for ventilation only. I use those on my hives and they're excellent.
