Many in the "traditionalists" camp point to the ecumenism as a source of heresy and "walking back" the stance that the Catholic Church is the source of full truth. This of course is false. All V2 did was recognize other religions, traditions, and peoples have glimpses of the truth, but never did it say that the Church should compromise its positions that it is the source of truth. The stronger objections come from rightful indignation at how odd the NO mass is compared to the TLM. I prefer the TLM as being more reverent. But NO mass is still valid. There's also been "overstepping" bounds by various Popes, like JP2 kissing a Koran. But I always remember the the Pope is a person, not a living Saint, not perfect, not "another BVM" type of person. But somehow many traditionalists interpret "you shall know them by their fruit" as requiring perfection. Reality is nuanced. Who know? If JP2 had not kissed that Koran, maybe many more Christians would have died.

Re: logical and critical thinking skills, I have found my engineering background, rooted in the logical thinking skills and problem solving skills, hugely helpful in me getting back to Christ. St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas are great examples.

@Gospel Simplicity I think of it like this. Similar topology covers engineering and the sciences as well as moral truth rooted in physical reality. Denying reality and the intentions of the Lord in using Christianity as a way to revere and protect interpersonal relationships and the basic units of them (the family) is ultimately destructive to humanity. Also, the data bears this out. Societies which embrace these truths flourish, and the more truth they embrace the better. Ones which then deny truth will eventually fall.

@@masterchief8179 One of the major difference is that Vatican 2 claims that Church of Jesus Christ subsists in the Catholic Church as opposed to before the Council that the Catholic Church is the Church of Jesus Christ. The Council moved toward adapting the Protestant notion of an invisible Church, yet not quite getting there. However, the Council also expended the Protestant notion of an invisible Church to include all major religions. The self understanding of what the Church is was changed in a major way at Vatican II. The change between Protestants being heretics to being separated brethren, and Orthodox from being schismatics to be not in full Communion with Rome. Actually what the Council says about the Liturgy is closer to Eastern Orthodox understanding of Liturgy than the Traditional Roman Catholic understanding of Liturgy. Yet, the actual reforms after the Council were in the direction of Low Church Protestant understanding of Liturgy.

And how that ties into the recent Amazon Synod where an idol was brought into the Vatican and a monk bowed down before it. And how on the other hand the TLM is drawing young families and traditional young Catholics are growing in great numbers and His Holiness strangely suddenly restricted the TLM.

As the assumed nature inseparably united to Him, serves the divine Word as a living organ of salvation, so, in a similar way, does the visible social structure of the Church serve the Spirit of Christ, who vivifies it, in the building up of the body.(73) (11*) This is the one Church of Christ which in the Creed is professed as one, holy, catholic and apostolic, (12*) which our Saviour, after His Resurrection, commissioned Peter to shepherd,(74) and him and the other apostles to extend and direct with authority,(75) which He erected for all ages as "the pillar and mainstay of the truth".(76) This Church constituted and organized in the world as a society, subsists in the Catholic Church, which is governed by the successor of Peter and by the Bishops in communion with him,(13*) although many elements of sanctification and of truth are found outside of its visible structure. These elements, as gifts belonging to the Church of Christ, are forces impelling toward catholic unity. Just as Christ carried out the work of redemption in poverty and persecution, so the Church is called to follow the same route that it might communicate the fruits of salvation to men. Thus, the Church, although it needs human resources to carry out its mission, is not set up to seek earthly glory, but to proclaim, even by its own example, humility and self-sacrifice. Christ was sent by the Father "to bring good news to the poor, to heal the contrite of heart",(79) "to seek and to save what was lost".(80) Similarly, the Church encompasses with love all who are afflicted with human suffering and in the poor and afflicted sees the image of its poor and suffering Founder. I would like unity for *all* Catholic Churches of the different rites. I see that you are Byzantine. Which Church? There are many that have the Byzantine rite. I want to say that you're in the Byzantine Catholic Church USA? But I don't want to assume anything. The Catholic Church is understood to be "a corporate body of Churches," united with the Pope, who serves as the "guardian of unity." That's according to Lumen Gentium. The other Catholic Churches, as opposed to the Latin Rite Church, were founded by the apostles and are autonomous Churches of their own existence. There are many autonomous individual Churches that make up the one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church. We should be careful not to blur lines of distinctions of the individuals just to emphasize unity. From what I understand, I can go and receive the Eucharist in one of these other Churches united with Peter in Rome.

46:50- regarding translating from the Latin; wouldn’t another approach be to make learning Latin more accessible? Especially knowing how something was translated- wasn’t one of the complaints of the “Novus Ordo” Mass that they mistranslated “many” for “all?” Wouldn’t it be helpful if the laity knew what the Latin was. People complain it’s a dead language, but it’s the basis of Spanish, French, Italian and Romanian. It’s used in scientific terminology and the root of many English words. My mother went to public school in the 1940s and 1950s and learned Latin. I never learned Latin and now I’m learning it now going to the Latin Mass.

I suppose it's possible, but I don't think it's very practical. I imagine there were people that would've told Jerome, "just make everyone learn Greek," but instead, we got the Vulgate. Likewise, after the Babylonian exile, the approach could've been, "make everyone learn Hebrew," but instead we got the Septuagint.

I used to not like Vatican II, that was until I actually read it and learned what it meant. I love the Second Vatican Council. My heart breaks at the sacrileges that bad priests, religious, and lay Catholics introduced, committed, and excused by the improper implementation of the Second Vatican Council. I still stand by the thoeology.

This priest is excellent. Learned so much. I believe that modern Catholics need to learn the actions of modern philosophy initiated by Machiavelli. We in the West and many by extension in the rest have been raised within modernity taking it in as our mothers milk Likewise if baptized and raised within the Church we are initiated into the actions begun by Christ who is The God-Man. Both actions conflict and intertwine. Both need to be understood but only one to be lived out and understood. The problem is often that good Catholics do not understand the really radical nature of modern philosophy and what it desires. Modern non-catholics fail to understand the radicality of Incarnation. One cannot resist what one doesn't understand.

I attend a very traditional parish. Some famous Catholic personalities have attended my church when they’re in town. The TLM is one of the most attended masses there. We started a study group on Vatican II reading Word on Fire publication on the 4 constitutions with commentary. The discussions and readings have been fruitful, informative, and frankly relieving. Most of the attendees in the group go to the TLM. It’s been a wonderful experience discussing the council in light of its intent and trying to make sense of the church now. People are feeling more united and love their church. The Sunday NO masses have Latin, Gregorian chant, incense etc.

Blake did say something that I've felt for a long time: that Traditionalists are the most attacked group in the church and need pastoral guidance from people who don't hate them so I'll give him credit for that

I appreciate Fr. Blake Britton's understanding of Vatican II, however, he frames the post-counsel dialectics in a way that maligns Tradtion. Traditionalism is not just a reaction, but a recognition that V2 MUST be read in continuity with Tradition. There can not be a break from the past, continuity is religion. If we do not have living continuity with Tradition, then we are dealing with a new religion.

So the first real paragraph he starts redefining terms, starting by reterming liberal theology as paraconciliary and defining traditionalism as based on falsehood. It's tough as a nondenominational Christian when listening to Catholics who claim to be based on ancient tradition and unchanging but also will demonize tradition and those resistant to change because they go against the papacy. As a thought experiment, would a Catholic support the words of Jesus or would a Catholic support a pope or a council, if there were a contradiction?

The Holy Spirit will not allow it. Jesus has promised this. I don't worry about the chance that a pope might do such a thing since nothing happens unless God allows it. In its efforts to destroy the Church evil cannot go beyond the point that God has set.

As a Catholic who witnessed firsthand the destruction and loss of faith caused by Vatican ll, I respectfully ask why this conversation, this book, this viewpoint is not coming from Rome nor has it been proclaimed loudly and clearly by any of the post-conciliar popes. For those of us who have witnessed it from the beginning it's been heartbreaking to watch what Vatican II has done, sewing confusion and rebellion. "By their fruits you will know them."

Vatican II was a unique chance for the Roman Church to return to the sources of the faith and to draw closer to Orthodoxy - to return to the Apostles and Fathers and to emphasize the truth, beauty, and goodness of the undivided Church. Instead, it was implemented as the top-down destruction of tradition, resulting in the protestantization and secularization of the Western Christian tradition, which the current papacy is continuing. The destruction in the wake of Vatican II is the primary reason that I became Orthodox rather than Catholic. I continue to pray for all our Catholic brothers and sisters! ☦️

Nevertheless, I share your concern that we seem to have lost the "hermeneutic of continuity" that the Latin liturgy is able to provide. @@ignacio.gonzalez.osb_dc They threw away the baby with the bathwater. Congregations are perfectly able to follow the liturgy in their books in their own language. Latin was the practical expression in the Roman church and the means of maintaining that unity. Moreover, if the language is changed, the entire musical settings may have to be changed. In practice this was done very badly and in many English speaking countries, the lazy path was adopted of borrowing protestant music or trying to fit Gregorian chant to the new translations, resulting in a liturgical kludge. Here in Sweden the liturgy is barely recognisable as Catholic. In Germany there is no perceptible difference between a Catholic liturgy and the Lutheran one. Due to the amount of migration, it is not unusual to find liturgies in a dozen languages each week in one parish. Disunity in expression has led to disintegration. The practice of celebrating while facing the people is probably the most damaging of the V2 changes as it is a major reason for the misapprehension that the Mass is a re-enactment of the Last Supper.

I understand that this is a kind of dialogue to see what differant “Christian “ groups believe. But it difficult to weigh in because the church that is closets to what the original church taught and celebrated has got to be the Orthodox Church. They don’t seem to have this problem What problem? Actually I think the Orthodox church was founded because around 1052 politics and bad (horrifying even) actions from the Roman's caused the churches of the Byzantine empire to break away. Along the way they made up theological differences. That is the definition of "what he says and what he says." It continues today with the Constantinople and Moscow patriarchs being at odds. Jesus by making St. Peter the first bishop of Rome, and cemented in Acts, made it very clear that the reason there is a pope is to avoid (in theory) those sorts of disagreements. Those who persist in those errors (read all "Protestant" churches and Orthodox church and yes the German "catholic" churches) are in schism.

The Pope declared himself superior to the Church, thus the Pope went into Schism and left the Church.

@@mariorizkallah5383 it depends. Do they believe Jesus is God? No. Do they believe that they are worshipping the God of the Old Testament? Yes, because who else do they believe in? They believe they worship the same God as Abraham, which is the One True God. This is important to distinguish as the God of Abraham, Who is God the Father, and has unique characteristics unlike other religious dieties. Most notably, He is uncreated, omnipotent, omniscient, immutable, and compassionate. Is what Muslims believe about God sufficient for salvation? No. In a sense, you can make the case that Muslims do not worship the same God as Catholics, but in that case you would also have to say that Protestants do not worship the same God as us, as we both understand God very differently. The important thing is that the belief of Muslims is not sufficient for salvation. The Catholic Church has always maintained that baptism is required for salvation and that objective schism or heresy separates you from the Body of Christ. I see no problem with Lumen Gentium 16 if you simply read it charitably. Is it too ambiguous? Probably. However that doesn't mean it actually teaches something contrary to the Faith. You can interpret Lumen Gentium 16 as heretical just like Protestants misinterpret the Council of Trent, how Arians misinterpreted the Council of Nicaea, or how atheists misinterpret the Bible. The reason we are Catholic is because we have the complete Deposit of Faith. Scripture, Tradition, and Magisterium all need to be there or else it isn't long until there is an error.

He himself says Lumen Gentium is 100% correct (just read it) if we understand what the document says and actually read it. But if you want to twist it and use the understand that Muslims worship the God the Father, which is obvious is a person of God, that is still heresy. That is because God is undivided, and though different from person's of God the Son and God the Holy Ghost, He is still the same nature and that nature isn't divided and thus you can not say we worship the same God. But even in that the gospel of Mohammad is a vastly different version of "God" than what Catholics have received in tradition and scripture. My statements are codified in the creeds and various encyclicals and council documents. Vatican II teaches the otherwise and that is the textbook definition of heresy. The documents say they “profess” to worship the ONE TRUE God (that’s exactly the reason they are not called idolaters like the pagans, but as “infidels” in St Thomas Aquinas or in the Catechism of St Pius X), which they even partially know of by natural theology through metaphysical reasoning. It is the case they follow false and corrupted “revelation” (Qu’ran) though, and it is correct to say they worship the One True God falsely since they don’t recognize the Holy Trinity in the unity of divine essence - and they also refuse to recognize Jesus Christ as Lord and Messiah. St Thomas Aquinas, on the 13th century, called the Islamic Saracens as “infidels” in his “De rationibus fidei”. I would encourage anyone to actually read the arguments used by St Thomas Aquinas against Islam in the “Summa Contra Gentiles”. In no part of Catholic theology they are treated in the category of idolaters (= those who worship a false god or false gods); they are treated on the category of infidels because they worship falsely the One True God. St John Damascene even treated Islam as inside the Christian heresiology in the 8th century: “the heresy of the Ishmaelites”, written in Greek, is part of his monumental “Fount of Knowledge”. So, to simplify it and show you are spreading falsities, Lumen Gentium brings exactly the IDENTICAL teachings of the Catechism of St Pius X. Catechism of St Pius X: “12 Q. Who are infidels? A. Infidels are those who have not been baptised and do not believe in Jesus Christ, because they either believe in and worship false gods as idolaters do, *or though admitting ONE TRUE GOD, they do not believe in the Messiah, neither as already come in the Person of Jesus Christ, nor as to come; for instance, Mohammedans and the like”* . So it is obvious that in no part of Catholic doctrine it is said that Muslims worship the person of the Father (from what did you get this idea?) since their very concept of divinity is entirely irreconcilable with the Trinitarian concept of divine oneness, therefore to the core of our faith. But no (absolutely zero) document of Vatican II says they have an authentic belief, only that they are mysteriously closer to Truth (and therefore to us) than pagan idolaters due to the fact that they profess to believe in the One God of Abraham. It does not say they indeed do nor it says they believe correctly (or authentically) - since they stick to the “preambulae fidei” and never arrive at the faith (“fidei”), to use a traditional nomenclature common in Catholic theology. St Justin Martyr’s natural theology also indicates, as St. Augustine would later, regarding the "true religion", that the seeds of Christianity predated Christ's incarnation through Greek philosophical reasoning (Socrates, Plato and Aristotle) and their despise for pagan polytheism. So stop spreading lies or talking of things you are not actually acquainted with, my friend. My God truly help you on dealing with your anguishes and may the Holy Spirit light your path.

One could make the same argument amidst the throes of the Aquitaine Schism following the Fifth or Sixth Ecumenical Council, or the schism of the Oriental Orthodox following Chalcedon, or the schism of the Persians after Ephesus, or all the Arians and Semi-Arians running around following I Nicaea. Full disclosure, I'm Orthodox, but we have plenty of ugly periods in our own history following such things as the Nikonian Reforms and the pan-Orthodox Synod that adopted the New Calendar. Conflicts, controversies and periods of confusion don't invalidate the Church as being the Church. The fact that the Church survives afterwards shows that Christ's promise holds true. We can afford more grace for our Catholic friends in this regard.
