Books I read in September 2020: Captain Cook's Journals; What Would Boudicca Do?; My Story (Caroline Cossey); Death Comes as the End; The Faraway Nearby; Men Explain Things to Me; and The Barber of Seville/Marriage of Figaro. I feel much better about "only" reading 10 of the 15 books I planned to read last month now, lol.

This idea is freaking GENIUS meg, i really hope you do more of these because the length? the content? the concept? i love it all. I'm so glad you mentioned Cemetery's Boys ending because I feel like I've heard no one talk about it but it's what dropped the book down for me. While to me the book read older than it did to you, the ending was predictable and rushed. Completely agree with you!!!

you looked so cute with the little headband when you did your makeup that i'll forgive you for your crimes against cemetery boys 💚🧍🏽♀️ no but, all jokes aside, i totally get it. sometimes a book will just read younger than you expected and it can really throw you off. i know that ppl will be like "well you're an adult, it's not for you, read adult books if that's what you want" but that's not quite it, either. i just kind of expect it to... fit? the situation/synopsis? the same way it throws me to hear YA characters talking like they belong in an adult novel. middle grade doesn't have this issue for me because it always knows what it needs to be, but YA is such a broad range that it can be tricky. (maybe it's also to do with everyone maturing at different rates during that time?) idk. i'm sure it'll work itself out in time, but until then, picking out YA books can be hit or miss
@megwithbooks3 жыл бұрын
LMAOOOO IM SORRY!!! and yes u summed it up perfectly -its the expectation kind of not being fulfilled!! omg youve made me connect the dots haha cos ur right in thats why it never really happens with middle grade! ur a genius

I totally understand where you're coming from regarding feeling disconnected from YA. Same as you, some of my favourite books are YA, but the newer ones seem to be reading younger and younger? Either that or the popular YA books recently are contemporary or have soft magical elements and therefore have a very modern voice, which isn't super enjoyable for me. I have to be very particular about my YA choices now, as I don't want to give a bad review to a book that is probably just not for my age anymore (and I'm nearly 22). I think I'm also just bitter because I don't want to admit that I'm getting older 😭

I felt the same way about jade city. I agree with all the the things people like about it, but I wasn’t super invested? For me I think it might be the pacing though. It felt too long / some parts were slow when I expected more of a sense of urgency (like right after that shocking moment in the middle). Love the vlog, this was such a fun challenge! 💚

Your thoughts about YA are exactly why New Adult should actually be a thing. Instead of guessing if something will read older or younger, we can keep YA appropriate for teenagers and NA written to appeal to twenty-somethings.
