About three years ago now I decided to dye the ends of my hair green on a whim, and while I was out playing at a wedding one day somebody said to me, "I like your hair, you look like Billie Eilish." At the time I had never listened to her, so after that I went home and put on her then-latest album, the multi-grammy winning "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?" and since then I've been an avid fan of her, both as an artist and as a personality.
When I discovered Billie had a new song attached to the Barbie movie this summer, I was intrigued to see what she'd created for it. This song has all the hallmarks of her signature sound that I love; it's deeply thoughtful and introspective with an arrangement that allows her voice to be the centre of its soundworld, with hidden depths that go further with every new listen.
Because the main attractions of this song are voice and piano, I thought I would try my hand at arranging it as a solo. It seemed like a simple task to begin with, but the more I worked at it the more I appreciated what a delicate balance it really is to try to bring out all the right parts, allow the right notes to sustain, when to allow space... it goes to show how complex a great song has to be on the inside, to sound beautifully simple to its listeners. I really admire that. You can tell a lot of passion and hard work has gone into it. And I love how Billie isn't afraid to ask the big questions, and talk about the darker parts of her thoughts - I'm sure that's one of many things that her fans find so endearing and relatable about her. It's certainly something that draws me to her songs.
Thinking about the lyrical themes of What Was I Made For over the last few months has given me pause for thought. There are times where I feel like I have little identity crises when I make cover videos. I love arranging, but I also know that I have hidden in it, I play a role to suit the song, and that doesn't always feel like I'm really... being myself. As you know I also love to play music that I've written myself, and I've explored in recent videos that I've gotten quite shy about it over the years. So, when I look back at all the covers I've done, I start to question whether I did it for me, or if I did it to please someone else. And sadly the answer is that sometimes, both of those things are true.
Throughout my career online I have tried to arrange music that I love, that resonates with something in me, because I believe if I care about it personally I'm going to be able to do it justice, and enjoy inhabiting it. But, I know I also need to take the time for myself to do my own music justice, and try to face the fear that if I show you who I really am, that I won't be accepted for it. I'll endeavour to keep working on that.
