I really like Mary Beard. She's plain spoken and very easy to understand. Great teacher. I'd love to be able to take some of her classes. I think I'd learn a lot.

Yeah, her style of narration and speaking is much more personable and chatty than other people who narrate documentaries. Also, she is so at ease with her subject, so thoroughly acquainted with her topics. Furthermore, we’re about the same age… She’s about three years older than me. I absolutely love the fact that she’s still wearing her hair the way she probably did when she was 16 years old. Rock on, Sister! 70s rule!

That Austrian guy speaks an interesting English. Like he never learned it at school, but picked it up by hearing in adult life. Rare these days.

When she was talking about kiosk type restaurants in ancient Pompeii. I was wondering how they did take out/take away orders. I mean how was the items packaged. In our modern times we are so used to getting food from fast food restaurants that are packaged in disposable wrappers, boxes, cups and all placed in a throw away bag for easy transportation. They didn't have these in ancient Roman society. I just wonder what was used if you wanted to take the food elsewhere instead of eating it in the restaurant.

Probably like we have today: rolled up filled flat breads, meat pies, pizza style cut ups portions, stew filled bread bowls, chicken leg in a pread pocket. Many carried cups and bowls with themselves at all times and would just get a standard ladle full of whatever food and a piece of bread.

They probably would have taken baskets..or a piece of cloth to wrap things in.

What comes through is how little people have changed in 2000 years. If you remove our technology life has changed little. We don't have gladitorial games but we're not less violent. Our organized violence comes in football, wrestling and the like. While not as lethal we've retained the desire for physical conflict. And our street or gang violence is far worse, at least in scale. We don't have slaves but have immigrants who serve much the same function. It It's not that different. Slaves often bought their freedom and prospered, immigrants, with brains and hard work move up in society ( at least generational). They're not that alien. They just lived simply.

3:20 everybody always talks about how the ruins in Pompeii are “perfectly preserved”. I guess the rest of the world has a different definition for “PERFECTLY preserved” than I do, because that Town definitely does not look “perfect condition” to me. It look like tons of rock hath fallen upon it. Perhaps it would be better and more accurate to describe it as “well preserved” considering what happened to it. It by NO means is “perfect” in intactness. That town got thoroughly smashed. Also, for me, from what I have seen on the Internet, in books, and in magazines like National Geographic, excavation at Herculaneum is much more interesting. But pay me no mind, that’s just my opinion. Also, I love Mary Beard.☺️

When usually you have shards of fragments to work with in the vast majority of archeological dig sites, this is about as close to perfection as you're going to get.
