Good explanation. Also, God kept the thorn to keep Paul humble, and His power is made perfect in weakness. God is in full control, just like with Job, and with Peter when He allowed satan to sift him like weat so he could strenghten his brethren. But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 2 Corinthians 4:7

I think it was a physical ailment. An eye condition possibly. “Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.” Galatians 4:15

"What then was your blessedness? For I bear you witness, that if possible, *you would have plucked out your own eyes 👀and given them to me* After having read the whole chapter, specifically verse 15, it occurs to me, the sentence may hv been an idiom. For example, he'll give you the shirt off his back. This idiom was first recorded in 1771 and used to mean someone would go to great lengths to help if you were in trouble. Saul may hv been saying he knew the people would have done anything to help him bear the difficult time he was going through.

Could it be possible that the thorn in Paul's side (thinking of this expression as something that constantly irritates someone) be other than physical? I give two suggestions: 1) His wife did not follow him into Christianity. When Paul wrote Corinthians he was not married but, having been a member of the Sanhedrin at one time, he was required to be married. Not only that, but if his parents had not arranged a marriage by Paul's mid-twenties, that would have been considered a disgrace in the Jewish culture of his day. 2) His realization that he could not take back his involvement in persecuting Christians -- specifically witnessing and giving consent to the stoning of Stephen's.

Separation from his spouse and remorse over past transgressions are interesting suggestions. Separation is hardly a slam dunk. We know Paul is single per 1 Corinthians 7 but he never speaks of his spouse leaving him. He is only acknowledging that those who came to faith often faced separation from a spouse and instructing them on the way to move forward. Member of the Sanhedrin is questionable too. The pre-Damascus Saul casting vote against the early Christian movement in Acts 26:9-10 is hardly the smoking gun evidence that the man was a member of the Council. Craig Keener notes ““Casting a vote” could also be used of unofficial decisions; Paul himself was probably too young to belong to the Sanhedrin, but he could still have exerted influence on others’ opinions. If Paul refers to more executions than Stephen’s, members of the Sanhedrin or unofficial courts may have voted for their execution while the procurator was in Caesarea, but the executions themselves, like Stephen’s, were illegal. Thus Paul’s account here paints his accusers, for whose cause he once worked, in a rather anti-Roman light” (Craig S. Keener, The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament [Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press, 1993], Ac 26:9-10.)

The thorn in the flesh was from Numbers 33:55, As well 2 Corinthians 11 and 12 describe the 'Super' Apostles that were not preaching the truth. It was never sickness. And a Messenger of Satan will always speak lies, which is what he was referring to!

The "thorn in the flesh" was a physical illness. St.Paul mentions this illness more than once in his Epistles. Possibly epilepsy.

I believe the thorn in the flesh of Paul was What Jesus told him on the way to Damascus What he must suffer for his namesake
