My first DVD was The Rescuers Down Under, and I bought it a year in before I even owned a DVD player. Since it's my favorite movie, and I knew I would be getting a DVD player eventually, I bought it when it was released in 2000, because I knew Disney had a tendency to only release movies for a limited time and then put them back in the vault, so I wanted to get it while I could. However, since RDU was a commercial failure, it's one of the movies they kept on DVD all the time. (Incidentally, it was also my first Blu-ray, several years before I owned a Blu-ray player!)

My dad and our neighbors got into a “keeping up with the Joneses” routine. Dad would cash in stock options and buy a boat, the neighbors would buy a used speedboat just to join us on the lake or the river, then they’d finance a faster, bigger boat. While Dad was the first to have the premium home theater cabinet, the neighbors were the ones with the first DVD player in our cul-de-sac, and I distinctly remember “Austin Powers” being the first DVD they had.

No, the fourth film in that Warner lineup wasn't Codename: Nina/Point of No Return/The Assassin. It was the 1995 Richard Donner film _Assassins_ with Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas. I don't know why people keep spreading that tidbit (probably because it's a Japanese DVD and it as the title Assassin in it) when I _have_ those four movies in my possession. They weren't the first four, either. The first DVD *period* was a music DVD from Shinji Tanimura, called "Shinji Ra Munita" released on November 1, 1996, and the first films (that I've found, basically everything before this was content such as background video) were released by Nippon Columbia on 12/1/96 and were Il Castrato, The Adventures of Priscilla and Chungking Express.
