I should've been clearer in the video, but I mainly wanted to talk about the first "KD-like" superteam, where a superstar player in his prime joins a team that's already one of the best in the league. The situation with Moses is what I think is the first time something like that happened. What do you guys think of superteams? They're good for the NBA in terms of a revenue standpoint, but when the playoffs start, it gets kinda predictable sometimes.

Now this year Drummond has been at least okay this year with his ft% at 60% this year, which is way better than his former best percentage which was 41%. Every other year had been under 40%. So yes historically Drummond has sucked from the line. He's much improved this year though I'd aim to improve that 60% to a solid 70%.

My definition of a superteam would be a team with two recent MVPs. So Golden state is a superteam because both Curry and Durant both won the MVP within the past 5 years. By this definition the Celtics are the first superteam because Bob Cousy and Bill Russell both won MVPs in the mid 50's.

I have problems with many of the points you raised. First you said define what a superteam is in your own words. IMHO a superteam is when three superstars or stars (think multiple time All-Stars, i.e. big names just below the top tier) join together on a team, with at least one of them being an incumbent on the team. The idea here is that one or more players are transplants from a different team that essentially stacks the deck. My go to example (alebit slightly imperfect) involves the rap groups Wu-Tang Clan and Slaughterhouse. Slaughterhouse is a supergroup in that the members rose to fame on their own before joining forces; they were known acts before pooling their talent and had careers of their own, which is exactly unlike WTC which rose to fame collectively. Thus, a superteam is a team that suggests artificiality, hence the common dectraction of "bought not built". That phrase was commonly used against the Heat, a team known for D Wade, but then acquired LeBron James and Chris Bosh of Cavaliers and Raptors fame, respectively. Though it wasn't used against Boston, they had the same design since they were the ones that inspired the idea of a "Big Three" with Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett of Supersonics and T'Wolves fame, respectively, joining incumbent Celtic Paul Pierce. Ditto for the Rockets when they got Charles Barkley from Phoenix and Scottie Pippen from Chicago to pair with Hakeem Olajuwon, but NOT before when they just got Clyde Drexler, and so many others. And here is where I have a problem with your definition and how it applies to this video. You say Moses Malone going to the Sixers was the first supergroup, but they did not have a big three. Moses was the only marquee player who joined Dr. J in Philadelphia. Now had they acquired either Larry or Magic, then yeah that'd be different, but they didn't. Doc and Mo were a duo, there was no third top option that really rises to the level of a superteam, all due respect to Andrew Toney. Now to the next issue. The Sixers weren't competitive long enough, which you admitted, but the reason why they weren't was what mattered when claiming they were. To clarify: IMHO, the Lakers acquiring Wilt in the '69 season was the first superteam. You said Wilt and the Lakers weren't the first superteam, although they seemed to be. You cite Wilt's "non-prime" and status as the third wheel as the reason why, yet overlook the fact that Doc was 33, and older than Moses when they won together. Wilt may have been 32 but he was far from the 3rd wheel. Bill Russell, the only center worth comparing him to in that era, retired at the end of that season, and thus was obviously in decline. With Wilt averaging 20 and 20, it could be argued that he was thus the best center in the league. In fact, with the Lakers getting him, they were the faves in the finals matchup, despite them ultimately losing. Though they lost a lot, they were contenders, truer contenders than the Sixers were after they got Moses. After getting Wilt, the Lakers went on to go to the '69, 70, 72, and 73 Finals, (winning in 72), and the 71 Conference Finals. The Sixers I think went to the '85 Conference Finals and that's it. Funny thing is Jerry West won FMVP. He was arguably the best guard from his era in terms of overall talent. Join that with Elgin Baylor, arugably the best forward from that era, and Wilt, arguably the best center from that era, and you have the makings of a superteam. But let's get back to Wilt. Wilt was the FMVP of the Lakers lone title in '72, a season in which Baylor retired. What does that tell you? Wilt, won it, not Jerry and not Elgin. So we have Wilt, a former MVP/champ and arguably the best center of that era, being sent to the Lakers with arguably the best guard and forward of his era on the team, (a team that had gone to half of the previous Finals in the decade ), who then went on to go to every conference finals for the next 5 years and 4 of the next 5 Finals. How could you not consider that as the first superteam?
@maryakopyan32245 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. Wilt was past his apex, but still more than dominant enough to where he was a superstar center, and not just merely an all-star. 97' Rockets I always considered 1 of the earlier super teams of the modern era, cause they got both Barkley & Drexler artificially to join Olajuwon, while all 3 still had 1yr left of being elite at their positions. 94' title-winning team was totally organic. 95' team somewhat inorganic, cause of how they got Drexler, but still not a super team. 97' team became top-heavy enough the forced way to be a super team with the addition of Barkley. John Stockton exposed their lack of point guard, and for one of the few times in the playoffs, the Jazz' bad players were better than their oppositions' bad players. In yesteryear, it was harder for super teams to be successful, cause most teams had such great chemistry then, that if you didn't, it showed. With so much player movement on every team now, the necessity to be solid at all five positions, or to have a deep bench, or for the pieces to fit good, has all greatly diminished. Good teams of the past had the chemistry to take advantage of holes at certain positions that some of the more top-heavy teams were likely to have, or to expose a weak bench, abuse a soft defensive interior, embarrass a team with too many wings and no true point guard by weaving through them on offense and ganging up on ISO guys on defense, and just exposing lack of balance. When none of the teams are balanced, it becomes just about who has the best top players, and not even about coaching. 11' Mavs were really the last teams I saw successfully exposing a roster that may have been too top-heavy to remember that you still need rebound to win a championship. 90s Bulls were 1st team to ever win it all with no true point guard or dominant post, but they were organic. I don't consider Steph Curry a true point guard, though he is dominant, and the Warriors have never had a dominant post during this run, as even the Spurs did with Tim Duncan, and Lakers with the combination of Gasol & Bynum. 08' Celtics were a super team, but they didn't encourage this recent trend of all-out stacking; Lebron did. 08' Celtics still featured a true point guard, dominant inside guys, Danny Ainge assembled a competent bench, Tom Thibidoue was able to coach up one of the greatest defenses in recent memory, and there still was an overall high level of dependency on members of the supporting cast. Tony Allen had to be their Michael Cooper. James Posey had to be a premier 6th man. Leon Powe had to be their Michael Thompson. Eddie House had to be their microwave. Kendrick Perkins had to be the ultimate bruiser for them. They dominated the glass. They had a grueling road in the playoffs. They didn't gravy-train, although their big-3 were all top-10 NBA players at the time, and they stole Kevin Garnett & Ray Allen. And they probably would've lost to the Lakers had the Lakers had Andrew Bynum.

T.H.E.O.R.Y Elgin Baylor was way past his prime that he was a role player when Wilt joined the Lakers. Could that be considered a super team? Yes because Elgin Baylor was a superstar a few years before Chamberlain joined.

Why can't anybody recognize that the main reasons for the Warriors success are their passing and off-the-ball movement, and not just their superstars? If three all-stars made a team a dynasty, then the thunder wouldn't be trash this year. Klay Thompson, Steph Curry, and Draymond were all playing together before Kerr revolutionized their offensive strategy...basketball isn't as simple as having star players, and I'm honestly getting pretty tired of that narrative
@ranholic50277 жыл бұрын
Lol but they had 4 all star on that team so it is still a superteam whether u like it or not
@GianlucOne887 жыл бұрын
They're able to move the ball so well and to move off it because 3 players out of 5 in their starting lineup are legitimate 25-30 PPG scorers. For them to play together means to have three times more space to operate than what they would have if each of them played as the only star of the team. For opposing defences it's just too much, one of them will necessarily be open. Plus they also have Draymond which is a terrific playmaker and passer at the 3-4-5 spot.

Dray and klay would not be an all star if warriors are not winning. You people couldnt still understand the nba. If the team are winning like the hawks in 2014, they got 4 all stars. But they dont really deserve to be all stars. Klay specially dray wouldnt be an all stars and would not be this good if they are not in warriors team. Steve kerr system is the main reason why they are a superteam. Look at celtics now, if they finish top in the east tatum brown and horford might play in all star game if nba wouldnt change the all star system.
@dens20237 жыл бұрын
Using your logic, if kd lebron and kawhi kp and giannis decided to play in sacramento kings. They still not a superteam.

You forgot to mention one major difference between the two situations. The NBA back then had a less teams so all teams 3-4 Hall of Famers, and their entire starting lineup to be at least borderline All-Stars. So Moses joining a stacked team wouldn't change as much as the current NBA which has 30 teams and a really diluted talent pool for so many teams.
@edwardkropp84007 жыл бұрын
My definition of a superteam is a team that coming into a season, you expect to win a championship and are suprised if they don't. They also have to dominate in the regular season. (Ex.2012 heat, 2016 warriors 2008 Celtics, early 2000s Lakers,80s Lakers and Celtics, ect.)

I think of a superteam as an assortment of all-stars signing with a team, or the definition where you gave, an all-star joining an already great team. But I would definitely qualify LeBron/Wade/Bosh and KG/Ray Allen/Pierce (not that they were first or anything which is the point of your video) as superteams.

I still think the best hypothetical parallel to what Durant did was if Shaq had gone to the 72-10 Bulls that had eliminated him in the playoffs in the summer of 1996. He was a top 3 player in the league and would have given Chicago the only position they were weak in (which Durant kind of did with the Warriors' death lineup). It would have been a huge scandal, and the Bulls would have maybe gotten 75 or 77 wins the following year.

What people don't talk about is that Celtics in the 60's had way more resources than other teams at the time to send scouts all over the country to recruit talent. The coach was very open to having a multitude of black players which was still taboo back then. No title team has had anywhere close the amount of hall of famers those teams had. Those were superteams. The first ones. Plus with no free agency guys stayed hence the 11 titles.

everybody has an opinion, mine is 1st super team, was when Wilt joined Chet walker, and Hal Greer & Lucious Jackson for Philly 76'ers, 64-65 and two yrs later, they won ring and set league record with 69 wins in 1966-67 season. Next super team was when Wilt joined Baylor, West and Gail Goodrich in LA for (68-69 season) the Lakers in 71-72 they won 33 straight games. next was Magic when he joined (3) HOF Kareem, Spencer Haywood and Silk Jamal Wilkes starting the 1979-80 season and won ring to go with 4 others. Now checked this out, 1979-80 season BIRD JOINED 5 HOF PISTOL PETE, DAVE COWENS, ROBERT PARISH, TINY ARCHIBALD, KELVIN MCHALE. NOW IF THAT WASN'T A SUPER TEAM, THERE WAS NEVER ANY BUT THEY LOST TO PHILLY & CHOCOLATE THUNDER 4-1 IN EAST . NEXT WAS MOSES MALONE JOINED 82-83 DR J, MO CHEEKS, ANDREW TONEY & BOBBY JONES IN PHILLY. NEXT WAS WHEN RODMAN JOINED 3 HOF IN DETROIT, ZEKE, JOE DUMAS & ADRIAN DANTLEY, A COUPLE YRS LATER THEY WON BACK TO BACK RINGS. BIGGEST SUPER TEAM WAS WHEN PIPPIN JOINED MJ & BILL CARTWRIGHT & HORACE GRANT ALONG WITH, 40% SHOOTING 3'S FROM CRAIG HODGES & LATER ADDING STEVE KERR, RODMAN , KUCKO AND ONE OF BEST DEFENSIVE GUARDS IN HISTORY OF NBA RON HARPER . NEXT WHEN SHAQ JOINED THE LAKERS, NEXT WHEN KG JOINED PAUL PIERCE, RAY RAY, BIG BABY, RONDO IN BOSTON THAT WAS 3 1ST BALLOT HOF. LEBRON, DWADE & BOSH WAS BORDER LINE SUPRTEAM. TODAYS WARRIORS ARE REAL LIVE SUPER TEAM

If only that Sixers team was as dominant as today's Golden State. I'd love to see a Sixers dynasty some day.

A super team needs Four or Five all stars in the starting line up and one or two must come from another team

The 80s Celtics,Lakers and Bad Boy pistons were definitely Super teams

Bill Russell came to the Celtics from the Hawks by an extremely one-sided trade, so I understand that you want to talk about other teams, but they'd count by your definition.

Wilt going to la or wilt going to philly would be the answer. But in the 60s the league had 8-10 teams so pretty much every team was one of the best teams... So the 1983 76ers is the answer: the mvp moses malone moving to the 1980 and 1982 nba finalists.
