this is the greatest office analysis i’ve ever seen, i especially loved how you put pam’s art show in context of the whole show, it’s my personal favorite scene of the whole show and this video gave me a new appreciation for it as well as the entire show itself… i’d love to see a breakdown of other comedies such as seinfeld or always sunny in philadelphia if you’re familiar

The first three seasons of the office will always be what I rewatch the most. While I do like most of season 4 and 5, there’s something about the quieter vibe and more subtle humor of the first three seasons that will always connect me with the characters and setting that I felt was lost as the show went on.

This is an outstanding video essay that unpicks layers of meaning in an all-time great show, and does so with palpable respect and wonderful insight. Academic criticism married to personal reflection and crystal clarity. You're a hell of a writer and creator. Thank you for this! (Also, damn you for making me teary-eyed about Pam's relationship with Michael again)
honestly my favorite youtube commentary channel, you're doing great work!

I love British comedies because of their dry humour, and a more cynical approach to life as opposed to loud, optimistic comedies of the US. However, the Office and Parks and Rec holds special place in my heart. Thanks for making this video. I am still at 5:00 mark hehe.

In the extended version of the episode with Jan’s baby shower, there’s a scene where Michael says goodbye to Jan’s baby. And he says to the baby that he also grew up with an absent father and he turned out okay, but it’s quite obvious that deep down he’s actually worried about the baby turning out like himself. And it was genuinely heartbreaking to watch for me. It takes a special kind of character to bring out that much empathy in a viewer, even in small moments like that, after doing so many horrible and idiotic things.

Great video! Showing the Michael part to my mom so she'll finally give the show a chance lol (she thinks he's too cringe) The Jim section was fair in terms of the overarching thesis of the video and how the shows written, Jim's character probably is one of the most inconsistent and it probably does have a lot to do with being the straight man, so like that's a character type not a character trait, so when they Need to use him, it really does create some inconsistencies and I for the most part agree, just I don't think his managerial arc was that. I was young when it aired, but I first thought that was really cool, he might not love his job but it's a natural next step that could really emphasize his strengths as a leader, the problem is, leadership can be overshadowed when you don't absolutely adore the thing you're leading, the way Michael does but realistically to a lesser extent. So it actually showed that a job he's perfectly qualified for on paper was not right for him, and from a narrative perspective, I always looked at it like a learning curve for his character, in the himym sense of "some mistakes you have to make." And if I'm not wrong, that was around the time he was building a life with Pam so it also makes perfect sense for his character to find ambition there, but have no real direction for it (considering he shows up every day to a job that bores him, it's safe to say he's not too big of a risk taker with work or financial security) so that misguided arc was still a step in the right direction, he just took a while to orient himself. So I do agree, I just think it still makes sense narratively and even proves your main point about the story structure in this show more

Additional note to your thoughts on Jim's personality and how he treats his non-Pam love interests: I think the flaws he has further cements him as a humanized, likable person/character. Sometimes decent people do make bad romantic blunders and nobody is immune to being the person who dumps someone after they move to be nearer, as sucky as that is to do. Humans make mistakes and there's value in thise mistakes if they're learned from

I know everyone is always going to love the US version over the UK Office because of its much more accessible approach (i.e., the US version always rewarded you with laughs rather than genuine, unacknowledged cringe), but the US Office took several things from its UK origins. For example, there's Michael's unexpected competence. That's absent from the UK version, but the fix came from the UK anyway. Series creator Ricky Gervais recognized that the US corporate culture wouldn't allow a middle manager to remain in that position if he wasn't successful at his job. He could be terrible in every other way, but he had to ultimately succeed in corporate's eyes because he satisfied the bottom line, hence there are several moments in the series where he makes the big sale against the odds. That evolved into other skillsets, such as showing him to have good managerial instincts even though his moment-to-moment persona lacked a filter. Another element is that the Office was comfortable being a comedy with drama. It's not like sitcoms have never had a serious tone before, but the UK Office never tried to exclusively be a comedy. In fact, the Tim/Dawn storyline in the UK version was the emotional core of that series and their story is treated on equal footing with David Brent's arc. It's clear that the US version leaned into that without quickly diffusing the tension by having one of the clowns (e.g., Dwight, Kevin, Meredith) drop a one-liner, at least most of the time. To this day people remember the emotional payoffs (usually built from seasons-long investments in character) rather than, say, snark or sight gags (e.g., costumes, office pranks) that characterize other comedies. The DNA of the UK parent is evident all through the US version, not just in the elements that were present at the start (e.g., Jim's haircut or the glances at the documentary camera). There are a great many more of these than I realized until seeing so many snippets in rapid succession here. Without giving enough context to spoil either version, we see three elements used separately (and modified, of course) in the US version that were part of a single moment in the UK series: Pam's artistic aspirations dismissed by others, Jim's note to Pam delivered in the teapot, and Michael Scott saying, "Never, ever give up." The one big different between the two series is also the biggest failing of the US version: It went on too long. Most cite this indirectly by pointing to Steve Carell's departure or some general trends, but the real problem was the lack of closure. The US version has many great moments that might have served to put a line under it, but a series only gets one finale, and they squandered their chance on a failed backdoor pilot about a beet farm. The reason the series is infinitely rewatchable is large because of this lack of closure. There's nothing that feels concluded. I hate to call it bubble gum, but you know what I mean. Most agree the flavor gradually left it and they didn't know when to spit it out. As funny as the US Office was, I will always love the UK version in a way that I can't completely embrace the US version. Sure, the original Office is a rough ride because the cringe is amplified by the uniquely English ability to willfully overlook the most egregious thing happening in the room, but because of that emotional brutality, you really don't know how things are going to turn out. As a result, you honestly don't know how things will turn out. You very much care about whether there is an ending. Fortunately, there is, and it is so very satisfying.
