This is where Peggys narcissism comes from. She was constantly bullied and belittled by her abusive mother, and it left her with deep low self-esteem and a desire to be validated. A prime example on why it's OK to cut ties with toxic people, even when your related to them.

@@tylermcbean273 Maybe you wouldn't, but abuse isn't just physical. Belittling her worth and profession in front of others. Blaming her for the state of the ranch because she refused to be forced married to someone she didn't love. Refusing to acknowledge her obvious skill as a rancher. Ungratefully refusing to thank her for all her work done to save the ranch and again claims it was her fault. She refuses to allow her daughter to have any kind of self-worth which is why she goes out of her way to instantly cut her down whenever she displays the slightest sigh of self-respect. She may be even worse than Cotton.

The series finale helps round things out, but I’d still love to see an episode that combined the non-profit organic beef ranch experience with it all together. Show an episode with Bobby, Joseph, and Connie taking the reins on the organic cattle ranch, and making a successful business out of it.

Grievances against Peggy inside, this is a good moment between her and Hank. Both of them have common ground on having a parent that will never show their approval no matter how hard they try to appease them. And while that's a horrible thing to face, both of them see that they themselves have done better by how they've raised Bobby and seeing how well he's doing. At that point the disapproval of their parents doesn't matter, because they've found their own worth in each other and their son.

True. Bobby really is the shining beacon of this show. Even Cotton, who dislikes so many modern things, approves and supports whatever Bobby wants to do. Despite Hank's gripes and murmurs of "that boy ain't right", he sure turned out to be pretty alright after all.

This episode pissed me off so much because Peggy is genuinely scared to reconnect with her mother. When she does her mom blames all their misfortune and the changing of the world on Peggy then when Peggy turns things around and gets them an out her mom still resents her. Boggles my mind. We never see Peggy reconcile with her mother in any type of form which is just upsetting because Hank gets closure with Cotton.

I mean, that's just how it goes sometimes. Some children never ever reconcile with their parents for any number of reasons, ya know? I think the whole point is symbolized in this very scene when they look at Bobby up on the cliff. The point being that sometimes, that validation you so desperately wanted might come from a person or place you weren't expecting. In the end, does Peggy really need to reconcile with her mother when she's already got a pretty loving family?

I love this scene so much. Peggy has done EVERYTHING she can to try to please her mother. And nothing works, nothing is good enough for her. It’s obviously very hard for Peggy especially because she never backs down. She gets ahead of herself and when Hank brings her back to earth she’s understandably crushed. Her sadness turns into anger as she realizes she won’t ever get her mom’s approval. What was the point of coming down here? What was the point of putting myself through hell trying to reconcile with my narcissistic mother? There’s no answer. Then they notice Bobby. Their pride and joy, having fun and taking in the beauty around him. He’s a good boy and they know it. As awful as both their upbringings were, they’ve managed to raise a good kid with the tools they had. Peggy’s mother is not Peggy’s family. Hank and Bobby and Luanne are.

As awful as she can be sometimes in the series, episodes like these where you see her being proud of Bobby or the ones where she tries to be a good aunt to Luanne, knowing that her niece doesn't have any other family to turn to after her parents abandoned her, is really sweet on its own, and moments like these redeem her character for me whenever she's at her worst.

It's narcissistic parenting. Narcissistic parents will never validate their kids, blame them for the things going wrong in their lives, or no matter what they do it's not good enough, and will belittle their kids. He stated that her mom is that type of person who just doesn't like people who brag about the accomplishments, people who do things just for the sack of acknowledgement. Now who dose that describes Peggy but it's obvious that the main reason why Peggy is the way she is, is because she never got that acknowledgement from her mother. It's like a Catch 22 situation.

My parents were far from the best at raising children, but at least they were proud of my accomplishments, encouraged me to follow my dreams, and never dismissive of my interests or hobbies. They never told me that something I liked was "just a phase" or something I'd "grow out of." I wouldn't be who I am now without their support and unconditional love. They didn't have unreasonable or impossible expectations, they just wanted me to do my best. Every parent should be like that minus the insane chain smoking, huge arguments, and irresponsibly with finances. They never drank, though. In 31 years I've seen my dad drink twice and my mother only have an occasional swig of fireball. Anyways, Peggy and Hank's parents were horrible and deserve a punch in the gut. How can you hate your child that much and then mock and belittle the person they became without your guidance and support? Some people just don't deserve to have kids.

Mike Judge made Peggy to be deliberately infuriating, he bases all his characters off of people he knows in real life, and he's probably had to deal with plenty of Peggys, as we all have. But people don't raise themselves. Every narcissist you've met probably had to deal with much worse growing up. We can at least love Peggy for being way better to Bobby than her mother was to herself.

I’m looking at the past episodes along with this episode you only see Peggy’s mom in the past episodes only briefly looking very similar to Peggy and yet still nags her. Then, suddenly in this episode, her mother looks very different doesn’t wear glasses she looks very similar to Judge Judy. We can see if she’s a toxic woman to her daughter and her son although his story kind of, I’m not sure if it was a prank or if it was just some surprise or whatever but it doesn’t make any sense his story either? I mean in all fairness they were running out of ideas they hit a wall and knowing the show is coming to an end they’re just making up some stuff possibly because they forgot back in the day and didn’t have time to get a right story together. The one thing I’ve noticed about this episode is not only the toxic relationship between Peggy and her mother but also the reality that we never got to see pays mother interaction with Bobby. At the very least, they could’ve at least shown some scenes where she probably had a good time with her grandson was more proud of him over her. The reason I say this is because in all shows I’ve seen where there’s always a toxic relationship with father, son, mother, and daughter there’s always second chances with grandkids. Like cotton Hill, I remember he may have been toxic towards his son along with Peggy, but at the very least, he did show compassion to his grandson. I just wish we got to see more of that. That’s the only thing I’m disappointed in this episode about it wasn’t always about Peggy time to squeeze in for Bobby. And that scene where in the end they look upon their son riding a horse good time for that his mother to come out and say now that is my grandson.

I really despise Peggy. Hank should have dumped her and taken Nancy. That would have been great drama.

Peggy has an overinflated ego (a lot of that due to the ongoing verbal/emotional abuse by her mother as seen in this episode; as well as her being a victim of flanderization). But if nothing else, she's a loving and loyal wife to Hank. Nancy cheated on Dale for over 14 years with John Redcorn. Not a good comparison.
